    Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

This is a horrible movie, plain and simple. It just can't live up to the infinitely superior Wrath of Khan. The characters don't capture the commanding and inspiring presence that the original actors did, or the gripping and thematic ideas and concepts explored in Wrath of Khan, and in the end this movie, just like the last one, clearly amounts to only being a generic action movie with the Star Trek name slapped on it. Really, nothing even remotely resembles The Original Series or the feature films from Kirk's era. When they filmed "Trials and Tribble-ations," the DS9 staff, wisely, built the sets to be exactly like they were in the sixties, and they even used the outdated technological filming equipment at the time to record it, just to get every shot, every angle, every aspect, everything about the episode perfect, for that classic nostalgic feel. That is completely absent in these two movies. Yes, you can't do anything about the original actors, but you can at least TRY to make the sets and the ships closely resemble the original Star Trek itself as much as you can, which they fail to do. This plainly tells me that this was just an attempt to cash in on the Star Trek name without putting any effort into it, a failing of Hollywood nowadays; they just throw big special effects at the screen and call it a day, and because of the systematic "dumbing down" of America, most moviegoing audiences are all too pleased with what they see. Not me. I hate these movies worse than I hate Nemesis. It's so obvious it's being made by people who have no idea what Star Trek is really about that it's a painful to sit through. Star Trek is not about big action, it's about social commentary on the human condition, and the action and story is only a means to achieve that. The action should flow organically from the plot, from the story narrative, and serve as a backdrop to the issues being raised and discussed, but nowhere do we see that kind of masterful storytelling craft in these pitiful excuse for Star Trek movies. It's simply more guns and 'splosions because hey, Hollywood thinks most people are dumb morons who can't be counted on to think for themselves, so we need to throw more FX special effects and eye candy at the screen to keep their attention, and many times in the past years they have proven that they are right, with the masses throwing praise to movies I can't stomach on an even remotely faint level. Ugh. I hate his movie and I hate Star Trek 2009 and I hope they don't make another movie anytime soon, and if they do, boot that dumb idiot, Jar Jar Abrams, off the production, because even he's admitted that he doesn't know that much about Star Trek. Put someone in charge who is intimately familiar with the franchise the way the cast worked to create "Trials and Tribble-actions" and then you have a winner. This is not the Star Trek I grew up with. The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and hell, even fucking Voyager and Nemesis (yes, Nemesis!) capture more of the Star Trek feel than these abominations do, though admittedly that last one is only because of the original actors, not that the story is in any way decent. After seeing this, all I can do is weep for the future of Star Wars with that brain-dead moron, Jar Jar Abrams, closely involved in the project, especially since Disney axed the EU. It's official. Modern theater has gone downhill, and I can't believe how many idiots are satisfied with that.
