Re: TNG S1: When the Bough Breaks

I certainly think that EM Forster's classic sf story-'The Machine Stops' was being consciously honoured in this episode.
Most of the characters in that story have no concept of how the planetary machine actually works either.
I cannot say I never disagree with Jammer as I found this story more interesting than the last one with the Binars but the shmalz was overdone and the wrap up pretty unconvincing.

I agree with the opinion that a better story arc would have been the Romulan War.
Why the 9/11 theme-seems obvious that this ghastly event in recent history had a large impact on the psyche.BB (on the DVD special feature) assert that they got the idea from the fan's favourite feature films.
Apparently we all love Star Trek 4 and First Contact.
Oh yeah?
Well I for one, did not think a great deal of The Voyage Home and although I like First Contact in my opinion the best Trek Movie by a zillion parsecs is Wrath of Khan.

So what happens to the Xindi-well they never get a mention ever again.
They have served their purpose so just get dumped.

So series 4-wonderful stuff is in store until the last episode-another BB offering.

I rather like the Reptilian make up and costumes although I am not sure how they could get through the scanner at the spaceport wearing slinkies.
I think the female sphere builders look like Odo's relatives.
Kidnapping Hoshi seems senseless.

While watching this I was thinking that Jammer would give this one a thumbs up. At last Archer has to face up to the extreme range of his obligations to the mission-these are potent ethical sacrifices and may turn out to be fatal for the alien crew he steals from.

Yup-this was not terribly good.
The lack of any lasting consequences for any one of our characters after this near miss, whilst inevitable, is incredible.
Perhaps the silliest thing was the landing party cracking open their helmets in the first place-this was an enemy vessel and anyhoo hadn't Trip scheduled Alien on Movie night by then?

I did suspect T'Pol but not immediately.
However we are not supposed to be taken in once we get to the frantic engine room scene I guess.
The mood in this story is handled very well.
Phlox' disturbing reference to having ben talked into watching The Exorcist the week before help convey the haunted house feel of the ship (Tucker and Archer are clearly horror buffs)and this is spaceship based creepiness that can hold its own with Pandorum and Event Horizon. Zombie Hoshi in the shower might have given some kids sleepless nights when this was first shown.

I also thought the unfortunate channelling of Let That Be Your Last Battlefield should have been avoided although the ending of that infamous episode at least had the Enterprise sloping off leaving Frank Gorshin and his enemy to it in the identical-in-concept ruins of their world.

I very much enjoyed the finale although the abandonment of technology seems a rather contrived idea.
Mind you this was what those nutty scientists were trying to achieve in Doctor Who and the Invasion of the Dinosaurs.
BSG has been a triumph of Big Idea SF-it beats most of the inane turgid pap we have to put up with these days hands down.

Well, I understand the criticisms but I have some time for this episode.
I would have liked the plot to have included some explanation of the Reptilian trio's time hopping but the show makers wanted to keep the Xindi's 'patron' alien race a secret until a later episode.
I hadn't watched this episode in ten years but it was one that had stuck in my mind.
Yes,the action sequences were nothing new but ,to be fair, shooting and punching were Archer's favoured method of dealing with opponents ( after getting out of a jail cell).
