BTW, to defend LAAS, think about the math here. Odo began communication with Humanoids in 2356....This season of DS9 occurs in 2375. So he really is about 19 years old. LAAS was around humanoids for 100's of years he said. All that he loved died, and those he did not love despised him...How is he wrong? Odo is wrong. Even with best possible circumstances, he will live a while with Kira until she slowly ages and dies. Then what? What makes this episode so awesome is that LAAS is RIGHT!

I absolutely love this episode, this is easily the best of the 7th season thus far. I am a first time watcher, so I do hope things get better. I can't help but notice that this 7th season is not working very well. I have a theory. I wonder if anyone can guess what my theory is. I have attached a list of the 1st 13 episodes of the season and the actors that got major screen time next to it. Does anyone else spot a trend?

Yeah this is bad. I am a huge fan of the ferengi episodes, and I normally love the mirror universe episodes, but this one really made both look really bad. Although I wasn't too annoyed by the Rom universe non-sense, funny though, as soon as he did it the 3rd time, I knew this message board would hate it!

But Man, could we have 1 episode that doesn't focus on Ezri?

OMG, she is BRUTAL!!! This is hard to watch. This is my first time watching season 7 DS9, and I am so glad for dvds, because I cannot watch entire scenes with her. Farrel was a terrible actress, but at least she was hot, this actress is ugly and a bad actress, how did she even get this part.

I disagree with anyone who thinks this one is predictable....Is it really that crazy to think DS9 would have bashir be an unwitting spy. It is this same character who was just a season ago revealed to have been impersonated for months while the real bashir was in a prison....How is programming him Geordi Laforge like really in any way unthinkable. I was actually surprised he wasn't. On to the Section 31 debate, DS9 has always been a little silly about this kind of stuff. We are made to believe that what section 31 did here was wrong, NO QUESTION, yet the very next episode Sisko is faking evidence to bring a whole empire into a war....What did section 31 do....put Bashir in a holodeck for 2 days...WOW crimes against humanity!!!! still..10/10 episode.

OK, so this episode is seriously bad, and even more shockingly bad because I feel that show had been on a solid run of about 10 truly great episodes. And sorry, but the beginning wasn't good, the whole episode was really bizarrely acted, I feel like the whole case over acted when they should have been subtle, and than fell asleep when they should have been over acting.... Anyways, I am on the side of Winn here also..sure, I liked her development in Rapture, but I think her reactions were completely justified when Sisko STOLE a priceless artifact from Bajor. Seriously think about, the Pope may love Barack Obama, but how would he feel if some Archeologist found priceless relics of jesus himself in the Vatican, and the Obama just stole them back to Washington? He wouldn't be happy!

@Jammer and Torayo, as to the sexism in DS9 and beyond, the reason there are female schemers using their bodies is because men desire them and women in real life use their bodies. That is life, too bad.

I did not love this episode. It was alright and it was really cool seeing everyone out of make up, Dukat and Nog in particular. I quite liked the first half of the episode when I thought it was going to be a light period piece, but than the "Racism=Bad" chanting started, OMG, can we ever get past this as a culture? I agree with some of the poster above who said that star trek works best in allegory, I did not like at ALL when this became "12 Years a slave" light.... I disagree on one major point with Jammer also, it is true this is the first direct reference to Brooks being black, but ever since "Past Tense" it has certainly been right there under the surface waiting for this terrible episode to happen.

Now, I have never been a fan of the "issue" episodes, I have stated many times I love Sci-Fi for the Sci-Fi, not for BS political reasons, I don't need over-acting Avery Brooks to tell me racism is bad, or stupid face painting in TOS for that matter, or boring TNG season 7 to know polluting is bad. I look forward to getting back to real science fiction.

For all crying sexism, what episode were they watching? It certainly wasn't this one. I wonder if people just comment without watching the episode. Outside of that last line (and even that really isn't sexist) there is not a single thing that make this episode sexist. I actually find it a fun episode. It is certainly no dumber than Captain Picard being a space-pirate! I felt genuine tension when they kept knocking out lest/kirk with sedatives.

At the end of the day, Lester was crazy, so Shatner had to act crazy! (and man does he chew scenes and spit them out in this one!)

I would love someone to explain to me how this episode is sexist?

I agree. This is a good fun episode, with an intriguing premise, and IMO easily the best episode of the third season. BTW, Jammer did you or anyone else notice something interesting about Mr. Atoz? A-to-Z

To restart this argument, I finally got to the DS9 ep where they infected Odo to kill the founders and destroy the dominion. I recall Sisko defending this. I am curious what everyone on this thread who defends Picard think about that? Are you going to keep your moral high ground and denounce Sisko and the federation? I will at least admit that in this instance Sisko was ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, and Picard wrong.

I also love this episode, but something bugs me about the fans response to this episode. Everyone says it is a fun cute episode, just ignore the physics of it, big deal, but then in season 7, genesis, all of a sudden science is the most important thing in star trek and because the events in that episode couldn't happen, it is an embarrasment to star trek lore and one of the worst episodes of cannon.....If anything, Genesis is more plausible than this!

That is absurd, they are both fun, stupid-science episodes, why is this one loved, and Genesis hated?

I liked this episode, but I can't say I love it like everyone else seems to. I have a problem with the ending. Why is the Vorta ratting out the his own soldiers "wrong"? Why is Sisko so pretentious about it? Why in the hell would he TELL THE JEM'HADAR? My problem is the Vorta is correct in every point. He does not have enough white to maintain the Jem'Hadar, so they will become killing machines then turn on each other. so how is getting them ambushed and than surrendering wrong? I don't get it. It seems to me a smart tactical decision. And I really don't get Siskos snarky attitude about it all. I really don't think there is an "moral issue" here, there is a problem, and a solution, and the Jem'hadar were going to die ANYWAYS......

I agree thatsome reason for not giving independence would have been nice, but probably not that important, there are a million reasons. We Americans LOVE giving independance, but in reality we really are not fans. Although not quite to the level of terrorism, anyone like me from Michigan can tell you the UP has a fairly strong separatist movement. Now if it ever got to the point of terrorism, who knows, because the problem is MOST in the UP do NOT support separation from the US. These issues are never that simple, and that is why I don't really care why the government of this planet didn't grant independance, they had a reason, enough for me. Look at the tibetans, it seems like an easy one for Liberals, but if you actually study the tibetan issue, it is WAY more complex than just giving some mountain guys some independance.

OK, this is one of my favourite TNG episodes all time. I realize I am in the minority, and sure there are little problems with it (Pulaski leaving the body in the shuttle for no reason), BUT, I think this is sci-fi at its purest. A pure mystery that may or may not even have a reason. I LOVED there was no explanation. If this was a season 7 episode, the entire 3rd act would have been data spouting nothing.... I love the music, I love the premise, I love the eerie build-up to the end. I absolutely love the scene where they are watching the enterprise blow up, they act like real people, again, compared to season 7 where everyone seems to act like they are cashing in a check.

I actually think later star trek lost something by not having more pure mysteries like this.

OK, first amazing episode! One of the best of the series...However, I am not sure that I agree with the central theme, that it is wrong for starfleet to create a race of slaves. The enterprise is as sopshistacated as data, and has already been able to create sentience (elementary, dear data), and there is a fleet of them, further, data numerous times saves the ship, why is it wrong to want to mass produce him for starfleet needs?

Sorry, one more thing...the atmosphere in this episode is wonderful. I give the director full credit, even after seeing this one probably 10 times, this episode chills me from beginning to end. I remember one night years ago, it came on late at night, and I turned the TV OFF as soon as nagilums face shows up....Come on that is creepy!!!

I can't lie...I don't love the Auto-Destruct plot device, BUT, I do feel it was a reasonable response to their predicament. And I feel it was very likely a bluff on Picards part. But for it to work, he couldn't tell anyone, even Riker (it is assumed Nagilum could monitor everything going on)

In other words I can't consider it a flaw since I could see a real ship commander doing this...Further didn't Kirk do that a bunch of times?

I gotta make a comment towards all of the "How did the show even make it 1 season" talk.....Let's not forget, this was filmed in 1987, what were the GOOD shows in 1987? I have below the top 10 shows (some ties) for 1987-88. Now I am not saying TV is better or worse, just different, and I guess that much like TNG, if these shows were produced today, they would die pretty quick.

I think this episode is amazing! Every beat is perfect, the pace is perfect, this is the only watchable Alexander piece. When I was a kid and Work impaled Duras with Riker screaming in the background, I was stunned, I couldn't believe peace loving Star Trek did this! But I was happy to. And then the scene where alexander asks worf if he is his father and Worf hugs him....I still cry...

I agree with this being a delightful episode. I am not cool with critics loving TOS for these type of religious-moral episodes, yet give TNG the same think, and it is hokey. I have noticed that people that knew going in this was a re-hashed TOS episode do not like it, yet people who don't know that seem to like it.

@David Hofstead, I think you miss the point in that the episode is saying YOUR prophets are the wrong ones, because there are NO right ones.

@Rosario, I love BSG, but you do illuminate the biggest problem, and that is Moores need to have conflict, just for the sake of itself. The greatest weakness of the show was how trained military officers would pull guns on each other at the drop of a hat every other episode.

WL123 point about living in a world with terrorism is absurd in the greatest degree, and in some ways illuminates the point I (and Rosario to some degree) am trying to make. In the late 60's we lived under the REAL existential threat of nuclear devastation from the Russians. Right now, terrorism, I guess, but even the twin towers is a pin-prick compared to what the russians could have done to us. My dad had nuclear "alarms" at his school. We factually live in a much better, safer world than the 60's.

And I frankly think Roddenberry was wrong in lot of ways, you can have a young russian pilot and visions of peace until the cows come home, but all Kruchshev had to do was push a button and bye bye NY or DC or both....Seriously, we could have lost millions of people.

But that is exactly WHY we need people like Gene and show like ST, to show us there "might" be a better future for us. Not DS9 or BSG that shows the worst of us, we need SF that shows the best of us. People always say they would have loved to live on the the original or TNG Enterprise, and that is exactly the crux, NO ONE wants to live on DS9, even the people on the show don't want to live there!

I personally do not believe we will ever live in a star trek Utopia, but that is EXACTLY WHY we need to dream of the Star Trek utopia.
