Wow, your Schwetty balls are delicious

Last weekend, my girlfriend Kathy and I made Oreo balls. Saying that sounds slightly wrong, and I can't help but be reminded of that classic SNL sketch where Alec Baldwin touts his famously delicious Schwetty balls.

Oreo balls are actually a tasty dessert treat that I first had about a year ago when Kathy's sister made them for a party. They're easy to make, and they're addictive. I have to be careful not to eat too many of them at once. I've been known to eat five or six in one day, which is not a good idea if you're watching your weight.

So, as the absolute proof that IDWID can truly and positively do what it do and go anywhere and do anything and go so far afield that your head might explode, I'm going to use this blog to share a recipe, of all things. As usual, I was more detailed and verbose than was probably necessary.

Have a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend. Take some Oreo balls to the party!

Oreo balls: a delicious chocolate treat

Ingredients

  • 1 package (40-50 count) of Oreo cookies (or reduced-fat Oreo cookies or similar-style cookies)
  • 8 oz. cream cheese (or reduced-fat cream cheese)
  • 1 lb. milk chocolate for baking (or dark chocolate, if you prefer)
  • 1 lb. white chocolate for baking

Preparation (goes faster with two people)

  • Place the Oreo cookies in a large Ziplock bag and crush them into the smallest pieces you can. Once they are partially crushed you can put them into a large mixing bowl and use an implement of your choice (po-tato masher, bottom of a ladle) to further crush them until they are the consistency of a coarse sand.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mix together the crushed Oreo cookie powder and the 8 oz. of cream cheese. Mix until homogenous.
  • Lay out two large sheets of wax paper or aluminum foil (about 2 feet per sheet). In your hands, roll the sticky/doughy Oreo/cream cheese mixture into a series of small balls about 2 inches in diameter (about the size of a small kid's super ball; smaller than a golf ball), and place them on the foil/paper.
  • In a small, microwave-safe bowl, melt about 4 oz. of milk chocolate in the microwave. Do it in 1-minute increments and crush/stir until fully melted/liquefied. Do not overheat, as this may burn the chocolate and cause it to congeal.
  • Dip each of the Oreo dough-balls into the milk chocolate with a spoon. Be sure the chocolate fully covers the dough-ball in a nice, thick coat. Place the dipped dough-balls back onto the foil/paper. Repeat for each dough-ball until you are out of dipping chocolate, at which point you can melt more until you have coated all the Oreo dough-balls in chocolate. (Do the melting in stages to avoid having the chocolate harden before you finish.)
  • Once finished coating all dough-balls in chocolate, let stand for about 5 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, melt about 4 oz. of white chocolate in the microwave, being sure not to burn it. Pour the melted white chocolate (caution: hot!) into a cake-decorating syringe* or similar implement. If you don't have a syringe, a small plastic sandwich bag will work. Simply cut a small hole in the corner of the bag to squeeze the chocolate through.
  • Decorate each of the Oreo balls with the white chocolate by squeezing it on top in "Z" patterns.
  • Let stand for 15 minutes. If possible, refrigerate to allow chocolate to fully harden.
  • Serve at room temperature or cold. (I prefer cold.) Makes about 50 Oreo balls, depending on the size of the dough-balls you rolled.

Note: You can reverse the white/milk chocolate if you want to make white-chocolate balls decorated with milk chocolate instead of vice-versa.

* I have not tried using a syringe. My guess is that you would want to clean the syringe quickly and thoroughly after use before the chocolate cools and hardens inside the syringe.

You're telling us how to make Oreo Balls instead of finishing your TNG reviews?!? Come on! You're killing me!

I had to write the recipe for my mom because she asked for it. It was already written for her, so I thought I'd share. Moms trump TNG.

This sounds very tasty and very time consuming :-) I can see how having a helper would...uh help. But it also sounds fun to make with another person. I'll definitely give this a try soon.

Jammer did you ever do any reviews of Babylon 5? I think if you did retro-reviews of the series that would kick ass especially with the new direct to DVD release coming up.

I just read that to my GF and she is totally game... gonna make these on the weekend!

Can't wait to make them. Got a question: when you mash the Oreo cookies into sand, do you leave the cream on the cookies or scrape it off before mashing? The reason I ask is because you can actually buy a box of Oreo crumbs. Thanks, Chris

The cream stays on the cookies. I don't know how it would turn out if you made them sans cream.

Hmmm...This sounds quite interesting, if a tad time consuming. But still...A unique form of chocolatey goodness that may one day sweep the nation forcing factories to suck all the goodness out of the product. Best to get while the getting is good!
