Just the "cat that got the milk" look on Riker's face when he walked in to Troi's room when she was wearing that dress, followed by the sudden change when he saw the other crewman was payoff enough for me for this episode!

Seems to me that the much vaunted tolerance that the Federation, and by proxy humans, are supposed to show for other races and cultures doesn't quite apply to Ferengis...

There's not really much I can add to what has already been said above, but I neither find the Ferengis distasteful nor amoral. They are who they are.

A major test of tolerance is to maintain it when dealing with something which runs counter to your own way of being. And it seems to me that the Federation, and indeed many of the Hu-mans on this site have failed that test.

Don't worry though, I remain tolerant of you! ;)

Re: DS9 S3: Past Tense, Part I

I have to agree with Elliot here... It's hardly up there with The Wire in its execution.

I think this is my main problem with Star Trek... I don't mind when they talk back about human's muddled past, but when they insist on SHOWING it to you in episodes like this it always feels incredibly heavy handed and somewhat contrived.

This episode was fun, but it still comes across like a cliche ridden b-film from the 80s. It's like a Robocop fuelled yuppie nightmare about their fears regarding the underclasses of our cities (as perfectly demonstrated by that idiot above, Ian).

I didn't hate this episode as I've learnt to live with the Star Trek way now and can enjoy it for what it is, but I certainly wouldn't be heralding it as a masterpiece of social commentary.

Re: DS9 S3: The Search, Part I

This was definitely my favourite episode of DS9 so far. I don't know if it's maybe that I just enjoy these action-centric episodes more, but for met his episode was really intense and I enjoyed it a lot.

Honestly I don't think the writing in any of the Star Treks is sufficient enough for it to be able to stand alone as a drama, so for me these kind of episodes are necessary.

On another note, I really like Quark and the Ferengi. I think Quark has become my favourite character on the show thus far. I especially liekd his speech in the previous episode about humans not liking them because they reminded us of what we once were, albeit worse! I found it actually quite poignant.

Re: DS9 S2: Paradise

I really hate this kind of puritanical garbage. I know the story showed the leader in an unsympathetic light, and I know other people on here have said how heavy handed the storytelling is, but even if both of those things had been remedied I still don't think I could put up with this insistence that there is some kind of 18th century idyllic life to which we should ultimately aspire to.

Life back then was extremely tough, even for those with relative wealth, so the idea that 400 years in the future there are still sections of humanity that would willfully place themselves in such a life style is incredulous to me. I thought we had evolved to be beyond such ridiculousness.

I just don't get it...

I've come to DS9 after watching Enterprise (big fan of TNG when I was a kid though), and I'm reading these reviews as I go along. But what is beginning to annoy me is that there were plenty of episodes of ENT as least or more entertaining than this that you give lower scores to. Now I read your reviews for ENT carefully and I'd say that a lot of your scores and reviews were fair judgements, but it just seems that you apply a completely different scoring system when it comes to DS9. I mean ultimately it makes no difference to my enjoyment of the shows, but it just seems like ENT has been cast in a much more negative light than I think it deserves.

Anyway, I do DS9's heavy handedness with its life and morality lessons a little jarring at times, and Sisko is painful to watch, but the show is growing on me I admit!

Re: TNG S1: Encounter at Farpoint

I'm coming direct from the DS9 pilot, and honestly I don't see how you can criticise the acting in this after that! While by no means exemplary, it is much more passable than the wodden drivel served up by Sisko and crew!

In regards to the special effects... Again I don't see what all the fuss is about. It served its purpose and for the time is again passable.
