Just saw the episode.
I've got issues.

I agree with the people who've said it is something of a villain origin story.
The villains being the CO and XO of the Orville.
The writing also didn't cover one thing, unless Malloy didn't actually love his family.
The moment Mercer threatens the lives of his children and Mallow knows he is willing to carry out that threat, friend or not, Malloy should have switched that blaster to kill and taken all three out.
Mercer never should have said he was going back.
Then, when he did tell Malloy about it all back in the future, Malloy should have been furious. This should have been the start of a strain between their friendship.
Especially since they were willing to sacrifice the ENTIRE union for Topa's sake.
Ed and Kelley are d**ks.
