Re: Star Trek (2009)
I just watched this movie again last night after several years. I'm sure it's been noted somewhere in the comments above, but I found it a little hard to swallow that Scotty could deposit himself and Kirk onto a warp-speed ship halfway across the galaxy, after seeing that Harry Kim couldn't get a transport lock on a barn door through a mere dust cloud. Oh, and that Kirk was deposited right at Spock Prime's doorstep.
Other than that, I liked it. I'm not letting myself get caught up in canon and all that; I'm accepting the movie on its own. It's a fun homage to the TOS actors and characters, and it moves right along. Time travel may be an old chestnut, but it's the only way to both pay that homage and also establish new directions, so I accept. Anybody having a problem with that shouldn't be watching a reboot in the first place.

Re: DSC S3: Unification III
Guess we're gonna have to rethink all those times Harry Kim was in command during night shifts.

Jammer, I appreciate the site and your (usually) sharp insights. But I don't understand your constant criticism about the Ferengi society ("...a Ferengi caricature, spouting Rules of Acquisition and being greedy just because the guidelines the writers have set down for the Ferengi as a culture demands it.") The Founders are just as one-dimensional (the Solids must be destroyed) but I don't see complaints from you about that.

Re: VOY S4: Retrospect
Seven of Nine **is* the best thing that ever happened to "Voyager," and that's the problem. Clearly the creators had no clue what to do beyond the first episode.

Re: VOY S4: Hunters
I agree with your assessment of Neelix -- the "Mr. Vulcan" shtick, the optimism fluffiness -- but at the end of the day, that's on the writers and the director, not on the actor.

Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks
Some people would pay to watch a Herbalife infomercial if it had the Star Trek name on it. I really think that is what CBS and Paramount are counting on.

Are we sure this isn't an episode of Voyager? It's just technobabble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble babble ...

< Seven has a phaser drawn on Narissa and could just stun her, but no. She stupidly gets close enough to have the gun knocked out of her hand so we can go through the motions.>
"But before I kill you, Mr. Bond, I want to explain my evil plan in excruciating detail."

Re: TOS S1: Shore Leave
Just saw this today for the first time while home sick. Maybe 15 minutes of action and exposition spread over 45 minutes (plus commercials!). Watching paint dry would be more interesting.

Re: DS9 S3: Visionary
I just watched this on the H&I channel. Meh. An out-of-the-blue plot for the Romulans to destroy the station, but fortunately this week we also just happen to have a time-shifting character who can warn the crew. This is DS9's variation on TNG and VOY's beaten-to-death plotline of "the ship is completely disabled or taken over, but fortunately one crew member happened to not be aboard and saves the day."

Re: TNG S7: Emergence
^ That's a big "if" and it wasn't present in the episode. With the music, it was just another Manufactured Dramatic Moment (With A Camera Hold On A Character's Face) As We Go To Commercial.

"LaForge to Bridge."
"Picard here. What's going on?"
"I wish I could tell you."
Then why the hell did you contact the Bridge?
Dialogue like that makes me want to throw that gold brick at the TV screen.

Re: DS9 S7: Take Me Out to the Holosuite
I liked this one. I liked the break from the all-war/all-drama Dominion arc, I liked the moral lesson, I liked that the godawful bumbling-underdogs-miraculously-get-it-together-and-win-the-big-game cliche didn't happen, I liked the moral victory they genuinely appreciated and savored.
Only thing I didn't like was the infirmary scene. Really, a group of battle-tested veterans beaten and aching from a few hours of playing catch on a ballfield?

Re: TOS S2: A Piece of the Action
Pam, you're not alone. I just saw this one again and thought it was insipid. Yes, there were some cute comic moments. But the whole "who's got the upper hand" changing every five minutes isn't an amusing running gag; it drained any momentum and plausibility from the plot. Worst of all is when suddenly it's The End and we have (a) no resolution to the planetary situation which set this whole thing up in the first place and (b) an additional Prime Directive issue because of an irrelevant piece of goofiness -- McCoy left his communicator behind. Kirk cracks a funny and we cut to credits. So WTF was the point of the whole story?

< Also, Leia was never supposed to be Luke's sister. >
If that's true then the scene near the end of "Empire" -- where an injured Luke calls out to Leia and she hears him -- makes no sense.

Re: DS9 S5: Nor the Battle to the Strong
Saw this on DVD yesterday. What I found disappointing is that Jake never opened up and spewed out what he was feeling. There was an opportunity there for some really emotional and powerful dialogue (well, at least to whatever extent Cirroc Lofton could take it), but instead he blows off Bashir completely and the only indication that he expressed his thoughts to his father was the line that Sisko had read what Jake wrote. The voiceovers were a joke -- cliches from the First-Year Creative Writing Student's Handbook delivered as though they were being read off a cue card. I wonder whether it's that the writer's couldn't come up with adequate dialogue, just didn't want to go there, or thought it would be wasted with Lofton's delivery, but it was an opportunity lost.

John, LondonBoy73, Steve:
You miss the point of the final scene. No, we viewers didn't need the moral of the story spelled out for us. The point was to show that the character of Kira finally understood it.

Re: DS9 S1: A Man Alone
It had absolutely nothing to do with the plot and could have been in any episode, but Quark and Odo had a great exchange here:
Quark: "You've never... 'coupled'?"
Odo: "Choose not to. Too many compromises. You want to watch the Karonet (sp?) tournament, she wants to listen to music. So you compromise -- you listen to music. You like Earth jazz, she prefers Klingon opera, so you compromise -- you listen to Klingon opera. So here you were, ready to have a nice night watching the Karonet match, and you wind up spending an agonizing evening listening to Klingon Opera. Huh."
