Re: TNG S2: Shades of Gray

Most pointless episode in Trek history. That's all I have to say about it.

Now for my Season 2 overview

Elementary, Dear Data: 7/10
The Outrageous Okona: 2/10
The Schizoid Man: 5/10
Loud as a Whisper: 4/10

A Matter of Honor: 8/10
The Measure of a Man: 9/10
The Dauphin: 3/10
Contagion: 7/10
The Royale: 2/10

The Icarus Factor: 3/10
Pen Pals: 6/10
Q Who?: 8/10

Up the Long Ladder: 1/10
Manhunt: 2/10
The Emissary: 6/10
Peak Performance: 6/10
Shades of Grey: 1/10

Average final score: 4.6

A lot more promise than Season 1 due to having some strong episodes. But it still has its share of major stinkers that severely hamper it's average final score.

Well, I'm not going to say Jammer is "wrong" even I think "The Children Shall Lead" is the absolute worst. But it's not hard to see why some would pick this as the worst

Re: TOS S3: And the Children Shall Lead

Spock's Brain is entertainingly bad. This is bad in such a lifeless, bloodless way. The only memorable thing is a ghost dressed in a mumu (yes, you read that correctly) and it's memorable for all the wrong reasons

Not a great opening season but not a bad one either, although it's a major improvement over TNG's inaugural season by virtue of having a lower ratio of trash episodes and a number of episodes that were actually good. Still, like Jammer said, there's room for improvement

Just an absolute trainwreck of a season, although it gets a little better at the tail end, but that isn't saying much. Few episodes even manage to be above average, let alone good. So many crap outings, it's a miracle it lasted beyond its first season

TNG's first consistently good season. A lot of classics and very good episodes with a thankfully low ratio of weak episodes. Easy to see why this is called the coming of age season

Re: DS9 S3: The Adversary

As a fan of John Carpenter's The Thing, I really enjoyed this episode. It does a good job with the suspense and paranoia but I do agree with the criticism over the lack of verification of their mission as well as the sudden mentioning of the Tzenkethi. We don't know those people, we've never even seen them. But we're supposed to take them seriously as a threat to the Federation? In hindsight it would have been better for the Founders to send the Defiant to try to destroy a Klingon outpost, since the very next episode ends up going the route of driving a wedge between the Federation and Klingon Empire.

And Odo's final words provide a very ominous ending indeed.

Not nearly as good a Season 3 finale as Best of Both Worlds, but a solid 7/10

Re: DS9 S3: Facets

Honestly the B-story was better. It's nice to see Rom finally grow a spine. Really gets the ball rolling for his character arc.

Auberjoinois does a great job as Curzon/Odo and Brooks is convincingly creepy as Joran, but the Dax story overall is just kinda...meh.

5/10

Re: DS9 S3: Distant Voices

An episode that works better as a concept than in execution. 5 out of 10 for a strong first half but a weak second half. The old age makeup is good and Siddig does a passable performance as an old guy.

Re: TNG S1: The Neutral Zone

The TNG cast's extreme pomposity is on full display here. Riker using a stockbroker, housewife and musician as the ultimate examples of why he's "surprised" their species survived the 20th Century? What a joke. Talk about the writers talking down to their audience. If you listen to Riker's quote completely out of context, you'd think they had just revived Hitler, Osama bin Laden and Pol Pot.

The tacked on Romulan part of the story is the only redeeming element of this episode. The plot around the 20th century people is dull.

Re: TNG S1: Skin of Evil

When this episode went through the Blu Ray remaster, they should have at least tried to redo Armus as originally conceived since they now have the technology to do so. No, this isn't me trashing on an older effect because it's outdated, I'm trashing the effect because it was unconvincing even in 1988.

I agree with Jammer that they did the right thing by avoiding the cliché of redeeming Armus. When it comes down to it, he is literally incapable of benevolence because he's made of nothing but evil impulses.

The episode isn't great but it's better than most of Season 1, which isn't a very high bar.

Re: TNG S1: The Last Outpost

In the first episode, Picard surrendered. In the third, he ridiculously capitulated to the Ligonians to the point of boot licking. Now he surrenders again. This probably wasn't intentional, but the writers were doing a fine job promoting a stereotype about French people in these early episodes.

Not to mention their refusal to fire on the Ferengi because "they only did so because we were chasing them." Yeah, after they STOLE from you. How wussified are these people. If you chased a guy after he raped your daughter and he turned around to shoot you, would you say "Oh I was chasing him, so he was in the right."

The Ferengi...*sigh*...not much to say about them. Something that was supposed to be a menacing enemy was quickly reduced to a complete joke and they never really recovered from it. The way they were behaving down on the planet, it would have been less demeaning if they literally started to throw shit at each other.

Re: ENT S2: A Night in Sickbay

Short synopsis: Archer commits a major diplomatic faux pas and spends the entire episode worrying more about his dog above all else while struggling with his desire to bang T'Pol.

Seriously, that's it. The episode is a 45-minute journey into crap that's about as entertaining as watching grasshoppers fuck.

Re: ENT S1: Unexpected

Ah yes, the episode where Berman and Braga decided that rape is funny as long as the victim is male.

Troi was raped in "The Child" and while the episode didn't acknowldge it as such, at least Troi's violation wasn't played for laughs.

Re: DS9 S3: Past Tense, Part I

Fast forward to March 2021, and San Francisco has a major homelessness problem. Hobos literally s***ing in the streets is causing a serious health hazard. The issue can only expect to get worse as California's cost of living continues to rise.

Meanwhile, the state's elected officials (both locally and in Washington) have spent less little time addressing the issue because they're more concerned with wokeness and conservatives hurting their feelings on Twitter.

@ DJ Worf Nuts

But if this were a board filled with Feminists complaining about men and how men are scum and aren't needed, you'd be fist pumping while shouting "Girl power!" Insufferable white knighting at its finest.

Being female doesn't make one above criticism. The sexes have always had general complaints about each other, but apparently it's only acceptable for one of them to voice such complaints.

Re: DS9 S3: Fascination

1. It's a Lwaxana episode
2. It's an episode where everyone is a horny teenager

That's a recipe for a trainwreck, and the episode is just that; a 45-minute disastrous trainwreck that only avoids being the worst of Season 3 because "Meridian" exists.

I'll include the caveat that Lwaxana's DS9 apperances make her a little less intolerable. She does have a few good scenes with Odo.

Re: DS9 S3: Defiant

@ Bob (a different one)

Perhaps they should have followed up, but it's all a question of Frakes's availability. Not long after this, he'd direct "First Contact" at which point he took more of an interest in directing than acting. His career since the mid '90s has reflected that.

Re: DS9 S3: Defiant

This was the episode that sold me on Ben Sisko's pimp hand...I mean, uh the USS Defiant; when it effortlessly crippled that Cardassian warship.

This was a nice character piece for Riker's same-but-different duplicate. He was alone and forgotten for 8 years before being rediscovered...only to be living in his own shadow. Tragically, his sense of pride caused him to go the opposite extreme of William Riker just so he could stand out as a truly different person.

The Sisko/Dukat scenes were also pretty good. Brooks and Alaimo always had good chemistry.

One a side note, this episode aired the Monday after "Star Trek: Generations" premiered.

Re: DSC S3: That Hope Is You, Part 2

It's frustrating because Picard had the best chance to do something like that. You had a planet full of androids, and we saw androids become a big part of life in the Federation...we could've addressed Guinan's analysis in Measure of a Man. There are so many modern day issues to be addressed in that series alone. And we got surface level touches that hinted at more...and Picard's righteous indignation at the Federation's isolationism was definitely a parallel to things going on everywhere...but maybe they're afraid to offend viewers? I really thought this season of Discovery might be that moment Bashir mentioned in Past Tense...with the Federation in its worst possible situation, but again, they pulled away from it. Frustrating.

Re: DSC S3: That Hope Is You, Part 2

I never thought I'd be agreeing, but yeah, Lower Decks was a lot of fun, and it even has a break the rules kind of character who I was worried would be annoying, but really wasn't. Maybe because it is animated and humor-based, they have more freedom, but either way, I look forward to more of it. I wonder if there will ever be a live action version of it, the same way we got live action versions of previously animated characters in the Star Wars universe?
