Re: TNG S3: The Vengeance Factor

The pacing of this episode is just so bad. The episode just spends a bunch of time characterizing all these meaningless characters who don't do anything compelling. The dialogue's pretty rotten and the point of the episode is lost among all the constant overly-rapid deluge of minor plot points. It's just bing-bing-bing-bing-bing-bing and nothing sits long enough to register.

Re: VOY S2: Tattoo

In its own way, I found this episode worse than Threshold. Threshold, at least, was pure weapons-grade crap science and stupid storytelling.

This one's up there with TNG: Code of Honor in terms of incredibly bad subtext. Here we have an episode where Chakotay's people get their culture from magical white hippies from the sky. It's so patronizing that it almost makes me want to blow chunks just watching it.

Re: VOY S6: Virtuoso

I didn't mind this episode for the first two-thirds or so, but I did find the characterization of the Doctor to be somewhat unbelievable. As much as the holodoc might have become amusingly insufferable over the years, I got to the point where I couldn't quite swallow my disbelief enough to believe that he'd want to leave Voyager behind. As much as the Doctor may be massively arrogant, his reasons for leaving the ship seemed incredibly forced and not all that credibly positioned.

I actually had no problem with the characterization of the Qomar considering that their hat is being emotionally stunted calculating machines. I'd assume that the performers gave the performance they were told to give. Not necessarily engaging, though, and again, the lack of engagement made the Doctor's big decision seem all the more unbelievable.

Re: VOY S6: Good Shepherd

I didn't mind this episode at all, but it definitely didn't feel like a spiritual successor to Lower Decks once I watched it again. Lower Decks was laser-focused on the extras. This one used the extras well but the focus was mostly on Janeway.

I really like the Harren character and I wish we'd been introduced to him earlier or seen more of him later. There's a ton the story could've done with him - here you've got a guy who's basically Richard Dawkins but doesn't want anything to do with the ship, but takes a step at the end of the episode. Would've been nice to see him pop up as an extra now and then and continue to come out of his shell.
