Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Of course I’ve seen Empire ... in the theatre during its original release... and 100s of times since.

I wasn’t saying that SW has to be positive and uplifting in the “Polyanna” sense. Empire is dark but as in any mythos, the characters are facing hardship and moral dilemas. They struggle, make mis-steps and then carry on the good fight for light. They choose light in the darkness. That choice to carry on IS the inspiration and hope. Having my archetypal hero hiding and giving into despair, thinking of killing his nephew, not trying to reach the good in him...not inspiring.

I suppose we could argue that as we all get older, we lose our youthful idealism. That is real life. I don’t want real life in my SW. I want my mythos back to help me choose light when darkness seems to prevail.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Many, like myself, grew up on Star Wars, Empire and ROTJ... The mythology helped shape who we are. Light vs dark in this universe was a moral code for a generation.
My parents went to church every weekend and learned about light vs dark. In our new secular world we were lacking the deep mythos that faith provides for so many still. Is it any wonder then that we don’t want anyone to mess with our heros? I’m a teacher and I still have a few Yodas on my desk because I want to remember to look always to the light, to be wise but also to have fun and be silly. TLJ is therefore not Star Wars for me. It destroys the mythological. Grumpy hermit guy is not Luke. Is it simplistic that Luke Skywalker would never give up and would ALWAYS strive for the light and love? Yes, but that’s what we need from our mythos...something simple (but impossible to fully achieve) to aspire to something to give us “new hope” when we are tired from work and want to yell at our kids. Ironically, Disney, known for happy simplistic stories, took the optimism out of Star Wars. It makes me very sad. We need simple light vs dark heros in our grey world!

Re: DS9 S7: The Changing Face of Evil

This is a forum for open minded discussion and debate. No need for profanities and name calling. I would hope that Star Trek fans would rise above that temptation.

Re: DS9 S7: Chimera

Racism, any “ism”, homophobia, xenophobia... are all learned. Genetic differences between so called races on Earth, are infinitesimally small. Chimpanzees are 99.9% gentically the same as Homo sapiens. Therefore @ Changling, your genocidal desire to kill all white people makes you the racist. Your “historical research” is flawed and your comments are beyond offensive!
As the Chief would say, “Bollucks!”
