Re: TNG S5: The Next Phase

God I love this episode. Yes, sure you can pick plenty of technical holes in it, but all the character elements are so great that I think you can forgive them. I remember whooping for joy when Data finally worked it out and Geordi and Ro appeared at their own funeral the first time I watched it.

If I was trying to get someone into TNG I might show them this, because it stands on it's own so well and is so thoroughly enjoyable.

Re: TNG S7: Eye of the Beholder

I didn't mind this episode. I think my major annoyance with it, like some others have mentioned, is Calloway's reaction to her boyfriend killing himself. She reacts more like she got told she'd lost her holodeck privileges for a few weeks than a tragic personal event. Given that suicide is obviously a rarer event in the Trek Universe than it is in real life, I'm actually surprised that generally it wasn't written to be more of a shock to just about everyone on board, and that they wouldn't straight away be looking for some kind of left of centre explanation rather than "he actually wanted to kill himself rather than live in the idyllic Federation, I can't believe that".

But again like others, the best bit was seeing inside the Nacelle. I feel sorry for anyone posted there regularly, I reckon after the initial "this is so cool!" it would probably get rather dull. Plus in an attack, the Nacelles are usually the first things to get hit, I can't see many surviving one of the Nacelle explosions we've seen at various points in the series.

Re: TNG S7: Parallels

This is probably one of my favourite episodes of the series, and definitely one of my favourite Worf episodes. I don't think we've ever had any other Worf episode where Worf was the central character and it wasn't some Klingon political drama. Here we have Worf with a totally sci-fi premise which is totally out there. I just loved it. All the little touches were fantastic. I still feel so horrible seeing dead Geordi naked on the biobed... why take his clothes of so that anyone can just come into sickbay and take a look?

Re: DS9 S4: The Visitor

Although I love this episode and agree it is one of the best of DS9, it's since been surpassed by other singular episodes of other shows as what I would consider "The best hour of Television ever". For me they are "The Constant", from "Lost", and "Ozymandias" from "Breaking Bad". The latter was quite probably one of the singular most heart stopping Television outings I've ever had. I didn't sleep that night after watching it.

I rewatch "The Visitor" quite often. Probably the single elements that drag it down for me, are the elderly makeup on Dax and Bashir. Whilst their performances were fantastic, it was quite obvious they were wearing makeup. Maybe Westmore had a day off?

Re: TNG S3: The Best of Both Worlds, Part I

Much of TNG for me at least was a unique experience, in that I was spoiled on just about the entire series. Every episode was new and I had virtually no clue what was going to happen next. The first time I saw BOBW Part 1 I had no idea the Borg were even returning, and then to have to suffer from that cliffhanger... brilliant, brilliant Television.

The only TV moment that even comes close for me is the Doctor Who episode "Blink" (which I was also unspoiled on). My only complaint with that, is that you can only ever watch it for the first time once. If you could pay money to forget having watched something like that and then watch it for the first time again, would be truly magical.

Re: TNG S3: Menage a Troi

Was a fairly annoying ep, but as a kid who was the same age as Wil Wheaton (and consequently Wesley Crusher), nothing thrilled me more than seeing Wesley in a full uniform. Thats the moment I take away from this episode. Though I still can't help but imagine how some of the junior officers elsewhere on the ship felt when the Doctors son gets to fly the ship while they probably have to scrub conduits somewhere :)
