Re: VOY S3: False Profits

Wow. I appreciated this the first time I saw it for the exploitation. The gullible population. Like Scientology or other cults as noted above. But further viewings. It is weird. Why do people keep taking off their shoes ?! And the guy with the eye patch ... MY GOD! There must have been a lot of tension on the set that needed blowing off with episodes like this. Maybe other much better episodes could not have existed without this kinda thing ? Who can say.

Re: VOY S2: Persistence of Vision

I think some may be forgetting how this episode appeared when it was first shown. It also leads to other "ship in jeopardy" episodes that is a particular trade mark of Voyager. The references to "delusions" are not coincidental and Voyager remains, to this day, as some kind of underground resistance against the tyranny of the psychiatric pseudoscience that we are still forced to put up with. To many Kes and her psychism may appear to be purely fictional, but Tuvok represents the enlightened acceptance of Psi phenomena as a simple reality in the Universe like gravity or light. So when it comes down to it where are the "experts" saying that the alien is not really using Psi attacks ? No. Kes does her stuff (of course the Ocampa have always been a template for latent human abilities) and the episode gets across it's point about not automatically judging those who "see and hear things". These themes also come up in later episodes such as "Workforce", a criticism of the use of electroshock. This and these other episodes astounded me when I first saw them having had a few tangles myself with oppressive Earth psychiatric pseudoscience !

Re: ENT S1: Dear Doctor

What a debate ! One thing I can't see being mentioned is that Memory Alpha lists the show as being rewritten by the studio against the wishes of the writers. Apparently Flox was supposed to keep his cure secret and not tell the Archer, the Captain would have used it ! But the studio did not want "two major characters falling out like that". So, if the story is true, we end up with a sanctimonious episode such as this. How many other times did the studio interfere ? I guess that may be par for the course, hair style changes are demanded and so forth, but I get the feeling that the studio fiddled with Enterprise so much that that caused problems later on.

Re: TNG S2: Pen Pals

Started off hating this episode because of wiping the poor girl's memory, but the comment by phaedon made a good point about the period this episode came out - first broadcast May 1989 according to Memory Alpha. The Berlin Wall had come down and been opened by November 1989 to give some historical context. So along with that and the other comments here I see this episode in quite a different light now.
