Re: DSC S1: Will You Take My Hand?

I remember in one of the Peter David novels, Worf tells Troi, "Klingons do not eat babies." He goes on to say that it is a rather underhanded/racist thing that some people still think about his people. Um...now I am thinking that there might be some truth to it, at least according to DSC.

No, DSC is merely an alternate reality, a la Kelvin-verse, to me. There's just no way to align it with the Prime timeline.

Re: Pike's Enterprise, five bucks says S2 opens with the Enterprise cruising away and someone saying, "Wow, I can't believe we got to meet Captain Pike!" And Tilly says to Michael, "You mean you didn't even talk to your stepbrother the whole time he was here?" The audience never even sees him.

Re: DSC S1: Will You Take My Hand?

It shouldn't come as a surprise after they let Mudd walk (remember that?)...but in this episode...

1. They let a violent megalomanic walk free, despite her very existence posing a major threat to Federation security. Even Hitler didn't eat *people*, right?

2. They released a mentally unstable enemy spy, who served as chief of security on a ship with access to incredibly classified intelligence and tech - a spy who flipped once and could easily flip again. James Bond would have just shot him.

3. They handed a planet-busting genocide bomb over to an avowed enemy who was a member of a racist cult that hated the Federation, and released her too. That's like giving bin Laden a nuke because he says he can keep the middle east in check for us.

4. JJ Kirk lost Vulcan and blew up an enemy ship, and he got directly promoted to captain. Mikey saved a whole planet, but embarassed the admiralty assholes, so she only got to be a Commander.

5. Sarek practically hugged Mikey while weeping tears of love. No wonder Spock couldn't stand to see his dad in TOS. There is Spock, decorated officer, good Vulcan, and brilliant in nearly every way, but his dad has a big soft spot for the mutinous ex-con he adopted.

Final thoughts...

I am not such a cheap date that I'll give it up in exchange for them showing me a flyby of a Discoverized Enterprise. That's 'I bought you dinner, so you gotta put out now' writing. #metoo

Garak could have solved this whole season's problems while hemming a dress.

My optometrist will thank me for cancelling CBSAA this month. He said the eye rolling was beginning to cause permanent occular damage.

Re: ORV S1: Mad Idolatry

Regarding the informality in aspects of the command structure:

I think a large part is Ed's preferred command style, which is informal in large part (clearly, the admiralty is more staid and formal). However, is it such a stretch that human cultural norms regarding formality would evolve a great deal over 400 years from the present? Look at changes in our own civilian and military formal culture from, say, the regency era to today. There is definitely a trend towards more casual interactions.

Um, was that ensign asking Ed in for a threesome? And were they smoking pot in there? Seems way more fun than that Disco party over on DSC.

Re: DSC S1: Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

I'm actually ok with Saru getting a pass. Sure, he said it was 'him' that did all that, but he had his fear inhibitions removed. Pretty much anyone would be a nutjob if they had zero fear of anything, including consequences. Those inhibitions are what prevents us from following through on every (normal) crazy impulse we have.

Re: ORV S1: Into the Fold

Re: Gut stabbings don't immediately kill you...
A doctor with knowledge of anatomy would be quite dangerous with a knife. Assuming that guy had an aorta or common iliac arteries in the same place as we do, she could have quickly killed him by severing it (within 60-120 seconds if he's anything like a human). Still 2 minutes can be a long time in a fight, and the additional gunshots would be something a doctor might resort to if she wanted a better shot at immediately incapacitating him.

Why are we bitching about things done on Voyager? So what, they crashed too many shuttles. The question is: was this crash story well-done?

Re: surviving the crash...
Maybe there was some sort of (distributed) emergency inertial damper, or force field containment that activated to secure the passengers after the shuttle was torn apart? Suspension of disbelief covers this for me, at least as far as it did for the (absurd) scene with Michael (MiaBN) Burnham in the brig in the DSC pilot.

Re: ORV S1: Into the Fold

"The older, less intelligent one seems to derive pleasure from inflicting damage on his younger, weaker sibling."

Isaac: Where is your counterpart?
Dr. Finn: I don't have a husband.
Isaac: Was he destroyed?
Dr. Finn: No
Isaac: Did you grow to despise each other and terminate your coupling?

"Would you like me to disintegrate them for you?"

After disintegrating the video game, "The game is never to be spoken of again."

"I would surmise that their intent was to consume you."

God, Isaac is a hoot. He's rapidly becoming one of my favorite androids - up there with Data and Marvin.

Captain Mercer was pretty solid in his smaller role this week.

Re: ORV S1: Into the Fold

@philadlj
I certainly agree that if she wanted to leave immediately, she basically had to assault him or kill him to do it. I don't think the guy had all his marbles. I mainly object to the doctor, a healer, being all smiles afterward. Maybe her comment that 'they don't care about life, but we do' was her way of reinforcing her battered self image after killing two locals. Honestly, they could have fixed all of this with just a few seconds of her looking shocked at what she did, or saying something like, 'Dammit, I was just trying to stop you, not kill you,' or even just a shot of her looking out the window looking troubled, like Picard at the end of BoBW.

Re: ORV S1: Into the Fold

I thought it was a wonderful episode. It was funny as hell without being over the top. The Isaac and the kids parts were my favorite. I loved how Isaac was beyond blunt with them (your mother is likely dead, the intellectually stunted one, never speak of the game again).

I wish they had made Dr. Finn at least make an attempt to save her captor, even if it was to leave him wounded and return with the crew to find him dead. He had some ambiguous motives, but he did save her life, and she should have expressed a bit of remorse or acted upset at killing him. But he was standing between mama bear and her babies, and that can elicit some stone cold murderous instincts in a parent. I just wish she'd acted a bit more disturbed at what she had felt she had to do

4.5/5 for the poor follow up on the murder, otherwise it was absolutely great.

Re: DSC S1: Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad

I mean, seriously...how is he not considered a monumental ongoing security threat? He did this much damage once, what's to say he can't repeat this nonsense again? Is being married to a bitch supposed to neutralize this madman? I can't figure out what the hell they were smoking at that party, but it clearly damages your judgement.

Re: DSC S1: Lethe

Jammer,
Yes. I had issues with repeated buffering and once being 'unable to access video feed,' which popped me back to the show page. This was on the Android app, on a Galaxy S5. I have had fewer issues using the AA app on my roku.
