Re: DSC S3: Forget Me Not

What a stunning hour of Star Trek. As even my not-at-all a Trekkie partner even said, the most Star Trek episode of Discovery. Hands down it was, and they pulled it off with flying colors.

Know DSC goes for the feels, but I wasn’t expecting to be crying, tonight. This time, it actually earned these feels. So well acted & paced & directed & WRITTEN! I gravitate back here cause I’m also pretty critical of DSC, so I enjoy the commiseration, but I couldn’t help but think DSC had found it’s own Inner Light or The Visitor. Indeed, the cello and those amazing cords of course made me think of Picard’s flute. I even had glimpses of Lost’s The Constant, just simply due to the power of the love story being told in less than an hour, with secondary characters (in this case, new ones!).

Really have to give credit where credit is due. Everything worked, and what came together was a marvelous ‘tapestry’ woven with great care and love. The Trill outfits & planet & characters were spot on, all
feeling like it could have just been out of a TOS story. The connection to Trek lore (Trills) was thrilling, and to top it off, the scene that Rise of the Skywalker just couldn’t pull off with dead Jedi: the past hosts of The Circle come forth to meet Adira. Finally, Adira announces all their names.

Bravo, DSC, BRAVO 👏👏🖖

Re: DSC S3: Far From Home

Jason, obviously they aren’t flushed quickly, & I feel as if you could have worked harder to support Omicron instead of the obligatory get lost if you can’t deal with it. That seems way over the top, no?

That being said, Omicron, thanks for info. If Jammer chooses to not moderate, we must respect that he expects the other adults in the forum to moderate. Us! I have faith we can all be kinder to one another in this place. The rest of the world is struggling, so let’s endeavor to have a place here where everyone can feel better for a time, and respected. Sorry for any passive aggressive statements on my part or anything I wrote that may have offended anyone. I just want to know what you all think about Discovery, the good and the bad, and I hope we can all choose kindness more often, and be more thoughtful about the time we spend before hitting send.

I hope everyone has a beautiful day and is gearing up for People of Earth! 🖖

Re: DSC S3: Far From Home

That's the thing, Tom, you can't see beyond yourself. For a ST fan, that's disconcerting. Maybe she does, maybe she doesn't read this forum. You don't know yet you don't care. Maybe her friends and family peruse them. Her fans certainly do. 2 days later and you're STILL defending yourself. And your Michelle Yeoh speaks bad English and therefore couldn't have risen in the Starfleet ranks comment is also prejudiced. Not everyone speaks with the same fluidity or accent as you.

Infinite diversity and infinite possibilities, remember? 🖖

Jammer, the lack of some moderation of the toxicity in this forum does directly impact if viewers return. People shouldn't be silenced but maybe they can be reminded to leave their discriminatory comments out of the discussions? Fat shaming and now language shaming feels entirely inappropriate. Thank you for considering.

Re: DSC S3: Far From Home

Come back to check out the always...lively discussions after a couple of days, and the weight topic is still ongoing?!

Y’all are of course entitled to your opinion, but what part of your peers telling you that they think it’s rude and inappropriate to comment on someone’s fluctuating weight (regardless if that person is an actress and “thus asking for it”) do you not understand? If you can’t respect Mary Wiseman (whose weight may or may not be related to any number of things that are none of your business), who I happen to think looks spectacularly gorgeous, then respect your peers and drop it already. Does this really need to be the fat hill fans die on?

Maybe she hasn’t been running as many Disco laps as usual. Maybe she’s stressed. Maybe it’s a gland problem. Maybe she’s just as athletic and strong but her body has changed and maybe she has not control over it, Starfleet member or not. This is Biology 101, and Manners 101.

I know class cannot be taught, but as an adult this a lesson you should have passed by default by now. We know you’re allowed to talk about it. That doesn’t mean you have to.

@Tomalak

No, Tilly is not at all unrecognizable. And what a very weird thing to comment on. If you say it’s not a criticism, then what exactly would you call it? Just an observation? You really couldn’t bring anything better to the table? Guess not.

Re: DSC S3: That Hope Is You, Part 1

Although too Star Warsy, this episode will always hold a very special place in my heart. Having been to a few of the locations (the crater in Myvatn MB lands on, the waterfall she fights from behind, & the Blue Lagoon where she gets healed) on Heim (Heimaey = Iceland), how could it not? I’m passionate about Iceland and passionate about Star Trek, & they managed to merge them into a beautiful premiere. And the emotions during the last scene was the cherry on top!

Yet I would be remiss on Jammer’s site to not be on blast about some things: 1,000 years is way too far into the future, hitting Book’s ship is ridiculous, the bug eating the prettier bug was right out of Return of the Jedi outside Jabba’s Palace, the non-stop fighting is too gratuitous (Michael punched Book for revenge no less than 3 times!), the worm engulfing Michael was too unnecessary and silly, and now that someone mentioned Mega Man blasters, that’s all I’ll ever see. Hate the Andorian prosthetics. I could go on.

But overall even though the writing is always the most lacking of all the critical components, episode 301 of DSC will always hold a very special place in my heart. I enjoyed the acting, the cinematography, the music (especially at the end), and I have hope for a decent season. But yeah to bring this full circle, the endless blasting, violence, Book being Force sensitive, and even the title of the episode “You Are That Hope” all feel way too much like SW for my ***ST***🖖

Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks

I’m saddened by this, but understand & respect your decisions. But, what if it’s a hit? What if it’s witty and tons of fun like Rick & Morty, & is a cult smash? If you renew and review DSC S3, not even a blurb of your basic thoughts (à la your concise TOS reviews) just for the continuity of having reviewed all Trek incarnations, isn’t in the cards? Again, I fully support whatever you do because you’ve brought me weekly joy for so long, and I only jumped on board relatively recently. The sky’s not always the limit, though, so who knows? 🖖 JAMMER

Re: PIC S1: Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1

Hi @Leif!

“I, Picard” isn’t as much a reference to “I, Borg” as it is to Asimov’s “I, Robot”. Picard is a potential candidate to have a mind transfer into Soong’s golem, hence the allusion!

Re: PIC S1: Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1

Sorry fo the nitpick but I was taken out of the episode briefly when a huge Borg cube crashed onto a planet and there were only 2 small streams of smoke coming from not even the cube but to the side of it. And everything landed right side up (it landed the same direction it seemingly flys through space?).

Gooz is a loser and should be banned or at least put on probation from commenting for starting the whole fat-shaming that others have pounced on. Asian hate, too. Take control of your thread, Jammer, and hold posters accountable for their lack of respect, class, and humanity. It’s very anti-ST and I don’t see how you can support such crassness. It will make many others including myself not stick around; all I want to do right now after reading the comments since Gooz started to ooze his rudeness, is go hang out on trekmovie.com where there seems to be much less toxic vitriol all the time. Please moderate better so I can enjoy the discussions here instead of wanting to press permanent snooze on this site cause of posters like Gooz’ mean-spirited ‘tude. Vile, to say Frakes should be on a diet. People like Gooz make me want to lose my lunch.

Re: PIC S1: Nepenthe

Yesterday I showed The Inner Light to my sixth graders, an annual tradition! Yes, moist eyes even after a couple dozen viewings. I love the STP theme song and heard the composer added the flute as a callback to TIL and the person Picard used to be in the past, but it's obviously not the main theme flute music. Well, I was pleasantly surprised and actually shocked to realize that when Batai, the son, is playing the flute, right before he tells his father he is leaving school to focus on his music, the melody he is playing actually IS the theme song for STP. Astonishing.

Just playing Data’s advocate here, but couldn’t Admiral Jarok’s statement from TNG’s “The Defector” about Romulan cyberneticists who would have loved to get their hands on Data also mean they would have loved to get their hands on him to disconnect or destroy him?

Re: PIC S1: Remembrance

@Nolan

"Consider "Insurrection" were an Admiral, backed by the Federation Council works with a violent, hostile race in order to uproot another, all for the sake of revitalizing the Federation. Per Ruafo "Federation support. Federation procedures. Federation rules! Look in the mirror, Admiral. The Federation is old! In the past twenty-four months they have been challenged by every major power in the quadrant: The Borg, the Cardassians, the Dominion. They all smell the scent of death of the Federation. That's why you've embraced our offer. Because it will give your dear Federation new life. Well, how badly do you want it, Admiral? Because there are hard choices to be made, NOW!" The Federation has been struggling. That's where we left it 18 years ago. Trying to claw it's way back to idealism, struggling against the dark. Then Romulus exploded. And here was a chance. A chance for the Federation to be what it was... and it ended in disaster, and all the pent up worries and fears were exposed, and it seems the Federation broke after all the strain it was under. It didn't die. It just became something else. And this show Picard seems to about trying to set it right."

THIS. What I miss about TNG and DS9 allegories were the close look at BOTH sides. It seems modern shows quickly decide who's right and demonize the other. I will gladly see the Federation's reaction to Romulus challenged as long as it is also understood. I think that's the only real way to have an interesting discussion about the fictional event - and any real-world situation. The Federation's actions have to make sense and be justified to a certain extent. They can't just be "bad" or "mean" because reasons.

I hope the writers see this way you do, I would be interested in seeing that.

Re: DSC S2: Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2

Thank you for everything, Jammer. Any prospects of ever doing The OA reviews? I drank the show in my top 5 along with Lost, all of Star Trek, & Twin Peaks, and there are only 16 episodes so it wouldn't be the biggest commitment, but the sci-fi is transcendent and if not, I at least hope you watch it!

Thanks again, I love the site so much

From a previous episode, but was bugging me, so forgive me for posting here, but: How did Spock, as a hologram created by Control (a la the holomirals) kill those 3 Starfleet medical officials in the sanitarium that Spock willingly (OMG this plot is so contrived) admitted himself to? I thought holograms were...light images, incapable of murder?

Is interesting that Fair Haven runned just after Pathfinder. I don't think it was a case, but a clear reference to holodeck addiction: Barclay takes refuge on the Voyager... and the Voyager takes refuge in Fair Haven...

Uhm... Following Braxton's "A-B-C" theory (Future's End), should we wait for Seamus knocking at Barclay's for "tuppence"? :-D

How large is a holodeck? How many people can allow? And in case of malfunction with the presence of 100 (or more) people, what would happen? OMG :-D
