Re: DSC S2: Project Daedalus

I have found many of the criticisms of this series bizarre, but especially this episode being faulted for not developing the bridge crew. All of the Treks have focused on a core set of characters with nameless bridge crew members, most of whom never see action or get any back story.

The main cast is clear: Burnham, Saru, Tilly, Stamets, Pike, with Georgiou, Tyler and now Spock occupying major screen time. Plus, we had Lorca and Culber developed and killed off, Culber in the supporting category. That's quite a large cast to develop in 13-14 episodes per 2 seasons when the other Treks had 22 and some did less over 7.

Claiming the show could have thrown in bits of back story for all of the crew is not realistic and doing it only to kill off a character is dismissed as manipulative. I think the show has hit the right balance. Ariam could well come back (as this show has done before) and if so, then the opportunity has been taken to fill out her back story in an exciting way.

I've enjoyed this season immensely. It's TV and better than most and the episodes I've re-watched after I know the back story are a richer experience on reflection.

And all of the moaning about no sympathy for what seemed to be dying Nhan - with all of the "redshirts" or equivalents bumped off and no one cared over the years? Come on. The twist worked for me.

The only thing understanding the brain may potentially gain us is knowing how small a role it actually plays in our functioning.

Re: VOY S2: Tuvix

All three characters - Tuvok, Neelix and Tuvix - are simply identities and are not in any sense "alive". When one says "I am Neelix" or "I am Tuvix" who is the "I" that is doing the identifying? A little investigation shows that it's the same one in both cases, therefore no one during the episode ever died. Tuvix's protests were meaningless and so were Janeway's actions.

Re: TNG S7: Gambit

These two were by far one of many horrible episodes - both of them. 1/2 star at most for both.

This 2-parter was where it was clear the producers had decided NOT to spend a dime on special effects. Whole sequences where characters pressed a button to fire a weapon and no weapon is seen. Everything looked cheap.

The death of Picard was flat, sending Riker after him was tired, the whole thing was boring as hell.

Between Dark Page, Masks and Sub Rosa, all in all, the worst writing of all seven seasons, some worse than season 1.

Re: ENT S3: Similitude

Just watched this again. It holds up even better than I thought.

Just one quick point on the subjecivity of these reviews. I am astounded that you gave Twilight nearly a perfect score for the very same reason you disliked this one. The convenient reboot of time through some bizarre theory of parasites affecting Archer's brain that could be undamaged through time? It completely spoiled it for me.

Were there better ways that they could've explained the cloning? Yes. Artificial acceleration of the clone's growth would've amped up the controversy and made more sense about its short life span, and I suspect that's what would've accounted for it. It makes the cloning more transparently disturbing and permits the delusion that the clone would never survive and have a life anyway.

DId I regret the "wap this up in 45 minutes" plot? Yes. It would've been much more interesting to drop the extreme acceleration and carry this plot out over several episodes, to let T'Pol's exploration of her feelings play out more dramatically as well, not just leave it ambiguous whether she had a moment of empathy to give Sim/Trip a goodbye kiss. And to play out the possibility that the saving of Sim might work.

Harder choices, less tidy outcomes would've elevated this to significant storytelling affecting the series, but it's well done nonetheless.

Re: TNG S6: The Quality of Life

The best thing to come out of this episode is the actors' discussion of beards in the teaser. Quality.
