Re: DSC S1: Choose Your Pain

Loved this episode! Agree with Zakalwe--what is all the noise about the use of the f-word??? And I am sensing a subtextual homophobia in some of these comments, but hopefully I'm wrong about that.

Loved the appearance of Mudd, and what he said is not wrong. This series is being made in a much different world than the world TOS was made in. There is now an awareness among many of Earth's people that "exploration" often leads to "exploitation"; that, in fact, many destructive exploits have been launched under the guise of exploration. I grew up during the Space Race, and I dreamed of a world where humans could continue to explore space. Now I hope we won't; we are destroying our own planet and I don't want to see us destroy more.

Re: DSC S1: Context Is for Kings

Way up above, Robert said this:
"And then there is the tech. ENT tried, they really did. They couldn't look more advanced than now (2000s) without looking more advanced than Kirk. But they did it in a way that made you feel like the problem was TOS, not ENT. That TOS had a limited 1970s budget, but if not for that ENT would be right before it. They had no shields, they had a junky transporter, they had a real live translator because their universal translator was new, they had a warp limit that was lower than TOS. ENT had other problems (for sure) but they made it feel for the Trek fans that this was before Kirk.

Nothing I hear about this show makes me believe the writers wanted to do a show before Kirk. They didn't want to use the established Klingons, they didn't want to use the established tech from ENT and expand a bit. They wanted to use holocommunicators that are beyond DS9. It's like when JJ added a subspace transporter. WTF?! They didn't want to use established ship designs. Or uniforms. We know approximately what the stuff from that era should be. And the answer is overwhelmingly... NOT THIS. So why not just set it in the future with a new set of aliens, unconstrained by all of this? Her mentor could be Tuvok instead of Sarek? I feel like whomever decided this needed to be a prequel isn't the person who is writing it and whomever is writing it resents those shackles... but maybe I'm wrong."

Yes, I completely agree. I find this show intriguing and I'll keep watching because I'll watch anything Trek, but the fact that it's set between ENT and TOS really bugs me. I don't understand why it isn't set after DS9/Voyager. That makes no sense to me.

Re: ENT S4: These Are the Voyages...

NoPoet, I like your ideas! I agree!

I found it very jarring when Troi tells Riker that "everyone" on Enterprise talked to Chef. REALLY???? That's the first I'm hearing of it. Bizarre moment in a bizarro and pretty terrible episode. Hope to read "The Good That Men Do" to wipe my memory of this episode.

Re: ENT S4: Terra Prime

Hoshi was great!

I too was struck by how (sadly) relevant this episode is, in 2020.

I'm also struck by the comments about how this was the "nail in the coffin" of the Star Trek franchise. Ha. Meanwhile, we've had a movie reboot and two more CBS series! Not quite dead after all!

Re: ENT S4: In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II

Good point, Some Commenter. We are not explorers--we are conquerors. Everywhere we go, we want to conquer. If we don't change that mindset, I hope humans DON'T ever get to explore space. We would only ruin it.

Re: ENT S4: Bound

Zane 314 posts for me. I thought this episode was a lot of fun--I'd give it 3 stars. The episodes with T'Pol half undressed for no good reason--those are the ones I'd like burned.

Re: ENT S4: Divergence

Agree with Snooky and dave johnson. I found this two-parter very entertaining. Love Phlox! This season is much better than all that came before, and I love that they are doing all these call-backs to Trek stuff from other series. Very very satisfying. Also, given Malcolm's odd unknowableness, it totally makes sense that he'd be an agent. I mean, totally. I love that they did this!!

Re: ENT S4: The Aenar

Loved this episode! I thought it was a great end to the trilogy. I loved the Aenar and Shran's burgeoning relationship with them. Captain Archer striking the right note and not being overly shrill/self-righteous. The Trip and T'Pol situation finally being handled realistically. Overall I give it four stars.

Re: ENT S4: Kir'Shara

Fun fact: the actor who played V'Las and the actress who played T'Pol's mother played a husband and wife on Six Feet Under (they played Rachel Griffiths' character's parents).

Re: ENT S4: Borderland

Agreed, Cody B. Tremendously enjoyable. Finally, some humor! This show takes itself way too seriously for my taste, so I was thrilled to see a little levity injected. Very fun.

Re: ENT S4: Home

I enjoyed this episode, but the scene where T'Pol and her mom are speaking in Vulcan so that Trip won't understand what they're saying confused me. Does this mean they were all speaking English before? Did Trip forget his universal translator on Enterprise?

Re: ENT S4: Storm Front, Part I

I enjoyed this one!

Thavash, this was just the latest in a string of episodes that I got a "Quantum Leap" vibe from. Whenever Archer wakes up in some strange new place or time and has to figure things out, I get that vibe. Happens a lot.

I could definitely have done without the Italian-American mob stereotypes, but other than that I thought it was fun.

Some of you are saying "Alien Nazi bad guys" like it was a BAD thing!

Agree with whoever said that the Sphere Builders look like Odo's relatives. They have that spooky not-really-there aura of the gods.

Re: ENT S3: E2

I actually kind of enjoyed this episode.

1) The scene where Malcolm finds out that he will end up by himself. So sad.

2) Loved T'Pol and Old T'Pol. I thought Jolene Blalock was great. I think she's doing a fantastic job with the character, in spite of some of the ridiculous outfits and situations the writers put her in.

I've actually grown tired of Scott Bakula as Angry!Archer. I came into the show a fan of Bakula, and loved him in seasons 1-2. But he does not seem to know how to approach this less optimistic captain. So far the only season 3 episode that I thought he was really great in was "Similitude."

Phlox is my favorite character, but T'Pol is now a close second.

Re: ENT S3: Doctor's Orders

Very enjoyable! Luckily I didn't see the twist ending coming, which added to my enjoyment.

Carbeterian from 2010, I live in the Bronx too and I remember that snowstorm! It happened just days before I was moving and I had to lug boxes over piled-up snow. Luckily I was only moving two blocks away!

Always love a Phlox-centered episode, and really loved the Easter eggs in there.

Re: ENT S3: Stratagem

Austin: I'm pretty sure the knife that Degra got near the end was the knife that Archer used to cut out the blood worm. Not sure why Archer just left it lying around, though. Or maybe it was back in the first aid kit?

Snooky, afaik the Xindi hate humans because they believe that humans will destroy them if they don't destroy the humans first. They've been told this by a time traveler.

I enjoyed this episode, and it made me want to go back and revisit Mission: Impossible. It also reminded me a lot of the stings they did on Leverage.

Teacher Will: I've never seen 36 Hours. Will have to look for it!!

Re: ENT S3: Twilight

I read recently that Anthony Montgomery felt that his portrayal of Mayweather was substandard because he hadn't been given any backstory.

My first thought was, dude, that's your job! I am reading all the time about actors creating backstories for their characters. It never has to be directly communicated to anyone, but it helps inform the performance, to give it more depth and richness.

Did Montgomery ever take an acting class in his life?
