Re: TNG S5: Cost of Living
i always think this is a 2.5 star episode because it actually has moments that make me genuinely chuckle. TNG does not have a lot of episodes that attempt this, which is kind of a shame now, I think.
"You're not going to be naked at your own wedding??", and Worf obliterating the completely banal Wind Dancer, and Alexander stopping the bickering friends with "The higher... the fewer" (and Worf, too, at dinner), and Mr. Homn smirking a lot, and Picard and Troi's look when Lwaxana agrees with Campio that it would be "unpardonable" to abandon themselves to the moment, and Lwaxana telling Campio "perhaps you and the Jerko can come with us" to the holodeck.
Even the laughing hour didn't bother me, because they used it for purpose in the big argument scene in Lwaxana's room, which is one of my favorite scenes.
Campio: Counselor Troi, have you no influence? (he means on Lwaxana!)
Troi: Ha!
Alexander: Ha!
And yes, Majel has a couple of nice scenes with Alexander, about loneliness, and apologizing for snapping at him in the holodeck, which is one of the few times I can recall TNG *EVER* showing an adult apologize to a child for bad behavior.
EVER. In TNG.
This isn't a 1-star episode. As a child, I remember that apology and being very impressed by it.

Re: TNG S2: The Measure of a Man
I'm here in 2015 watching it and just wanted to say that I dropped some tears. Really. Enough said.

Re: ENT S3: Hatchery
I can't understand why this episode required mind control for archer to do something entirely reasonable. I think in the same situation i would have done my damnedest to save them. especially after seeing the little insectoid foetus. If this was any other star trek the rest of the crew would be treated for unusual levels of apathy instead of archer.

Re: TNG S1: Too Short a Season
Gates McFadden's beauty saved this episode for me. God, she looks gorgeous here.

I totally disagree with all the comments above and with your review and most of the other reviews. Maybe I'm too new in the Star Trek universe, but I thought this episode was amazing. It shows another culture with strong sexism, in a fun and intelligent way, using this opportunity to criticize our own society. It gives room to some important character development, like Data being the robot with huge precision in following orders, as any other human couldn't do (and for doing so, saving the day), it shows La Forge as the captain and his fears in the duty (Worf gives him good advice on that), and so on. It has some cool moments with Riker being as diplomatic as smart (as a man) getting laid with Beata. If he didn't like this, maybe Beata wouldn't spare the revolutionaries lives.
I also liked how all those troubles (disease, romulans, execution, etc) comes all together, giving the right ammount of tension without getting out the focus on the plot. Yes, maybe it has some flaws, like when they get a oold even if in the last episode they said cold wasn't more a disease in the future. But I think those flaws aren't enough to make this episode bad.
And yes, Beata is gorgeous.
