Re: TOS S1: Charlie X

I know these were written ages ago, but ...

“When he experiences a crush on Yeoman Rand, his determination to win her over is poisoned by his ability to harness his anger when his feelings aren't returned.”

Should that be “inability?”

Re: ORV S2: Blood of Patriots

I still don’t know what this show wants to be — a comedy or a serious, Trek-style drama. This episode leans toward the latter, but with the occasional prostate exam? (I guess. Did she actually go through with it?)

I honestly think “The Orville” can work as a hybrid of the two styles if it’s done like the episode “Krill” from season 1 — my favorite so far. That episode works for me because it’s almost like watching an episode of MST3K — all the Krill are dead serious but the two humans, though they’re characters on the show, are cracking jokes as if they’re Joel/Mike/Jonah and the bots watching it on TV in the 1990s. (Gordon’s multiple lines about Avis rent-a-car are all great.) They seem to be abandoning that formula for a serious space opera — interrupted by the writers saying “Oh crud, we’re supposed to have jokes in this too. Uhhh, have Bortus make a stink about not getting a corner piece ... although I LOVED that particular sequence.)

Am I supposed to give stars with this? OK, um ... 2.5.

Re: DSC S1: The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry

@Erik

Did you really watch this episode? The person who was desperate to weaponize the alien got killed, while the people willing to makes steps to understand it were spared. If you don’t see a peaceful message there, you might not be looking hard enough.

Re: DSC S1: The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry

Here's why DIscovery is not working for me: the US and the industrialized world are in a relatively dark time. Trump. Putin. European far-right nationalism. Climate change. I don't want more darkness from a franchise which once was able to paint an optimistic picture of the future. With the threat of the cold war in the 60s and 80s, TOS and TNG showed us a way out, when Americans and Russians (and then Klingons) sat side-by-side on the bridge. In the mid-90s, after the Iron Curtain fell and before September 11, the US was in a relatively calm and prosperous period. So, DS9 could be a little dark and that was OK, in fact it seemed to carry some insight. But now... well, I turn on the news and see neo-Nazis elected into the German parliament, the entire island of Puerto Rico ripped apart in storms... and I don't want to see more violence coming up 200 years from now.

Rather, I want to see how we worked our way *out* of warfare, bigotry, and environmental destruction. The captain of a Starfleet ship treating a newly-discovered life form only as a source of weaponry is exactly the opposite of what I want, psychologically, from my Star Trek. I can imagine cruelty already. It's all over my TV. Ugh. What I need help imagining, is a beautiful future.

Re: VOY S4: Unforgettable

Am I the only one who kept thinking the guest star was Victoria Jackson ... and kept expecting her to talk in that high-pitched voice?

Re: DS9 S3: Past Tense, Part I

Is this a chilling vision of Trump's America? It occurs to me that 2024 would be the final year of his second term, if he's reelectes in 2020.

Re: DS9 S3: The House of Quark

Loved this episode, although ... does it seem odd that Gowron rules the entire Klingon Empire AND settles land disputes that would likely be handled in earth by a municipal court judge?

Re: ENT S3: Damage

Also, I think it's quite novel that the series manages to make the audience hope that the captain will be killed so frequently.

He's like "people might die" and you're hoping that he's the one who makes that prediction come true.

Seeing him beaten doesn't satisfy because you know he's going to come back, uglier and stupider, in the next episode.

And people didn't like Wesley and Neelix. I'd take an entire crew of Wesley, Kes, and Neelix over one Archer.

Enterprise is so much fail.

Poor Jolene Blalock. Almost every episode I feel sorry for her being stuck with such incompetent writers.

Re: DS9 S6: Honor Among Thieves

I agree with Jammmer here. A cliched plot full of holes, with great acting and some thought provoking ideas about loyalty and morality.

Everyone seems to agree that O'brian was chosen as the 'everyman' but remember that he's also the soldier; and I don't mean just in the sense of being in Starlfeet. He fought in the Cardassian war and he did things he later felt were wrong because he was in a fight for his life. I think that's why he can sympathize with Bilby. He's also killed people, so he can't hold it against Bilby to do whatever it takes to survive.

"There, but for the grace of god, go I." seems like a nice summation. Change the circumstances of their lives but a little, and O'brian could be Bilby, or Bilby could be O'brian; and they both know it. I believe that's why O'brian knew that Bilby wouldn't kill him.
