Re: DS9 S5: The Begotten

I agree, by giving Odo his powers back, they kinda made his time as a solid meaningless. What did Odo or the show really gain out of it? And the magical gift by a dying changeling baby seemed waaaaaaaay out there. At the very least, shouldn't Odo be infected with the same disease?

Re: DS9 S5: Rapture

Meh, this episode was OK, but it still suffers from classic Trekkian overplaying of everything. Sisko on the promenade telling fortunes was just cringe-worthy, as was the general treatment of his sudden I-CAN-SEE-EVERYTHING state. I liked that Kai Winn's becoming a deeper character, but this seemed like too radical a departure from the woman who sent murderers after people she didn't like. If they wanted her arc to really to go that way, they should have spent more time developing it; this was much, much too fast.

Re: DS9 S5: The Ascent

About Rom, I think it's been firmly established that he's some sort of idiot-savant- great at all things technical, but pretty hopeless when it comes to anything else. Aside from the first season attempt to kill Quark, Rom's character has been pretty consistent.

Re: DS9 S5: Let He Who Is Without Sin...

Coming right after Trials and Tribble-ations, this probably marks the worst 2-episode run in all of DS9. At least this did kinda explore Dax-Worf and attempt to justify what the hell they see in each other (I still don't buy it, but whatever, you can't choose who you love blah blah). And I'm glad they acknowledge that Worf is the most boring character in Star Trek, and perhaps all of television. "OMG HONOR! OMG DISCIPLINE! OMG AM I KLINGON OR HOO-MAHN?!" There, that sums up Worf's every interaction.

"The Essentialists" plot was ridiculous; I wish they had just gone further and made it a total Christian parody. Might have squeezed a few laughs. Leeta's Rom-fatuation did make me smile though.

Re: DS9 S5: Trials and Tribble-ations

I'm probably in the minority here, but I thought this episode was one of the worst DS9 eps I've ever seen. It's even worse than Let He Who Is Without Sin (the Risa ep everyone seems to hate). Maybe it's because I didn't really watch much Original Series and thus missed the relevant Tribble episode, but Trials and Tribble-ations just seemed the worst kind of pointless fan service possible. It relied on one gag- putting DS9 characters in TOS scenes. Kinda amusing the first scene, but after that, it's just beating a dead horse. The worst part is that it wasn't funny! Where were the jokes? If they're gonna do what is clearly supposed to be a comic inconsequential episode, why didn't they just go for the gusto and turn it into a total farce? I have rarely been so bored during a DS9 ep; at least the Risa outing had lots of scantily-clad women!
