  • December 19, 2008: Here's the review for BSG's "Escape Velocity."
  • November 21, 2008: I'm finally back (again). I won't get into all the excuses for my excessively long abscence. Maybe I'll blog about it later if I feel like it. For now just revisit BSG's "The Ties That Bind."
  • July 9, 2008: I'm finally breaking my long silence with the posting for the review of BSG's "Six of One." I'm going to try to get this sombitch back on track. What the ongoing schedule will look like is hard to say; we'll just take it one review at a time.
  • May 20, 2008: DELAY UPDATE — As is obvious by now, my reviewing schedule for BSG season four has been pretty much shot to hell. I've been watching and greatly enjoying Battlestar this season as it's been going on, and I have a couple reviews actively in the works, but it's going to be a while before I can get anything posted. As for getting caught up before the season ends, I have no illusions of that being likely, if indeed it's even possible given the million things I have on my plate in addition to, you know, a day job. Homeownership is great, but it's keeping me very busy as I continue to get myself settled in, put away my stuff, and sort through boxes and drawers that I have not looked inside for a decade or more. Really, what I need is a wife to help me with this whole house-becoming-a-home thing, but as a single guy prone to procrastination and a hypertext mentality to chores that inspire hypertext-like distractions and tangental tasks, this is slow going. My hope is that since BSG is off this weekend, I might, maybe, make some headway and start getting caught up on reviews (in some form) before the season is over. Thanks for your patience.
  • April 27, 2008: REVIEWS DELAYED — As you can probably guess, the reviews for the most recent BSG episodes have been delayed. I haven't even seen Friday's episode yet. The reason for that is simple: I bought a house and have been in the process of either preparing for the move or moving for the past week. (The week before that, I was a Best Man in a wedding and had to write a toast.) You never realize how much stuff you have until you move, and boy did I find out in the last few days. Anyway, my desktop computer is still in pieces (I'm writing this update on my laptop), along with most of everything I own. I'm enjoying being in my new house, although I'm still very, very far from the "settled in" point. I'm also still in the process of cleaning the old apartment before I hand over the keys on the 30th. When will the BSG reviews be written? I'm still not sure; it may be well into this week before I can get the "Six of One" review posted, and who knows after that. There's the possibility that the next few reviews will be a bit shorter than usual since I've got about a million things to do with the house (including mowing the lawn, which is about three inches longer than I'm sure my neighbors would like).
  • April 9, 2008: Battlestar Galactica season four has arrived, and so has my review for "He That Believeth in Me."
  • March 20, 2008: I've posted the last 12 episodes of TNG Season 4. This officially puts me over the halfway mark, and it only took three years! Granted, a lot of that was procrastination...
  • March 4, 2008: I promised that TNG would eventually resume. I'd hoped it would be sooner than this, but I'm trying to get back on track. I've posted reviews for the first 14 episodes of Season 4. The last 12 will follow later this month.
  • February 25, 2008: As The Wire prepares to close shop, I've posted some thoughts on the series in general over at IDWID.

2007

  • December 5, 2007: Well, after many months, here's my first official non-IDWID Jammer's Review since the early days of summer: BSG's "Razor." Also, I now have new RSS feeds available not only for all my reviews and blog posts, but all the related reader comments as well. Subscribe and participate!
  • September 7, 2007: Jammer's Reviews has been completely redesigned. Get all the details here.
  • June 13, 2007: Here are TNG reviews for the last 12 episodes of season three.
  • June 12, 2007: Over at IDWID, I've put up my thoughts on the Sopranos series finale.
  • June 5, 2007: At long last, after nearly a year of inactivity, I've officially returned to the TNG reviewing project. (Actually, I officially returned to it a week ago when I started watching TNG episodes and writing reviews while on vacation.) Here are the first 14 episodes of TNG's third season. Whether I can keep up this pace is doubtful, but I will be trying to make serious headway throughout the summer. My hope (no promises) is to have all of TNG done by December 31, 2007. That's my goal. As always, it's subject to change, but I'm going to try.
  • May 23, 2007: Over at IDWID, I've posted a review of 24's sixth season.
  • April 19, 2007: I've launched my blog at IDWID.com. See details here.
  • April 18, 2007: The main-page site counter (enacted March 1, 1997) passes the 4,000,000 mark.
  • April 4, 2007: The review for BSG's astounding season finale, "Crossroads, Part 2" is now up. With the BSG season now wrapped and the series not returning until next January, I want to quickly explain my Star Trek: TNG intentions, which some people have been asking me about periodically (not to mention the annoying anonymous e-mails that practically accuse me of breach of contract, to which the response I want to supply is, "Get a life"). TNG will be moved back to this site's top priority this spring. Believe me when I say I have never for a minute forgotten about TNG or considered my work there done. It's just been a matter of waiting for my schedule to clear enough to get back to it as a major focus. That time is coming, so keep watching this site in the coming weeks and months as I get back to a project that I fully intend to finish.
  • March 31, 2007: Here's the review for "Crossroads, Part 1."
  • March 21, 2007: The review for "The Son Also Rises" is now available.
  • March 13, 2007: The review for "Maelstrom" is now posted.
  • March 6, 2007: Here's the review for "Dirty Hands." I've also reshuffled the various notes pages into a single page that's long, rather than many that were short. Hey, why not?
  • February 28, 2007: I can't hold it in anymore. Here's a rant.
  • February 21, 2007: And here's the review for "A Day in the Life."
  • February 20, 2007: I've posted the review for "The Woman King."
  • February 11, 2007: Here are reviews for "Rapture" and "Taking a Break from All Your Worries."
  • January 20, 2007: And just in time for season three resuming: "The Passage" and "The Eye of Jupiter."
  • January 5, 2007: Major update at long last! "Collaborators," "Torn," "A Measure of Salvation," "Hero" and "Unfinished Business."

2006

  • December 19, 2006:

This is not how I wanted it to go.

I pictured myself, like I (perhaps foolishly) do at the start of every season, turning over a new leaf and keeping myself on track to deliver my reviews in a timely fashion — which is to say, the week after the shows have aired — so that I wouldn't be buried by the cumulative pileup.

Obviously, that has not happened during the first half of Battlestar Galactica's third season. I have seven outstanding reviews at it currently stands.

Part of it is simply my fault, as I've not been keeping on top of it. My personal life allows little or no time to write on the weekends anymore, which means I have to write during the week, after work in the evenings. Honestly, I haven't been disciplined enough to stay on it. Part of it is my own necessary squandering of my free time (watching too much NFL during football season), and part of it is general post-work evening malaise while trying to manage my life without going nuts. Part of it is pure laziness; I just haven't felt like it.

And part of it is the fact that I have indeed been writing some, trying desperately to catch up. I have a number of the outstanding BSG reviews already written, and I'm determined to finish almost, if not all, of the remaining seven reviews for a major site update before the new year. Some of them may unfortunately not be my usual thoroughness, and I think I'm willing to accept that as a means to get back on track for 2007. I say it now, and I hope I can mean it. We'll see.

Sorry for the delays. Rest assured, I will return.

  • November 3, 2006: Finally, here's my take on the opening of season three: "Occupation/Precipice," "Exodus, Part 1," and "Exodus, Part 2."
  • October 6, 2006: I'm ending my hiatus with an early kickoff to the BSG season three reviewing season with a review of the webisode series, "The Resistance."
  • August 17, 2006:

I just thought I'd give a quick update on the status of things in my neck of the woods, seeing as it's likely going to be some time before I write anything new.

First, thanks, everybody, for the feedback on the main index redesign as well as general comments about the reviews. As always, I appreciate your thoughts, even the negative ones. (Possibly my favorite e-mail of the month is the guy who wrote me my first hate mail in a long time: "I have read several of your reviews and find them funny. I pretty much disagree with everything you say. I think your reviews suck. That is my review of you with about as much insight as you give in your tainted and very sad rhetoric." I guess you can't please everyone.)

Some of you mildly questioned the wider format of the redesign, but, overall, even those who wondered about it thought that the site looked better.

One thing I thought I'd put to rest is the implication that my redesign work had any bearing on my TNG reviewing, or more specifically, current lack thereof. It really didn't. The redesign only took a few days. My life in general has been very busy, and I've been swamped with work- (and therefore web-) related stuff that has made it tough to find the motivation for review writing. (It did, however and ironically, give me the motivation for some web designing.)

Anyway, for the next month and a half I'm on a massive website redesign project at work, which, due to my obssessive focus, is occupying not only a ton of my time (putting in long hours at the office, etc.) but also most of my creative/mental energies at the moment. The question of whether I will even attempt to think about TNG reviews in the next month is a good one. My honest prediction is no, so expect the long periods between updates to continue for a while, possibly all the way up to BSG restarting in October. I know this is not what the TNG fans want to hear, but it's the way it's probably going to be for a while. Thanks for your patience.

  • August 1, 2006: Time for a limited redesign! See the redesign notes.
  • July 18, 2006: Finally, the behemoth of a BSG season finale gets a behemoth of a review: "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 2."
  • July 11, 2006: Here's the long-delayed review for BSG's "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 1."
  • June 12, 2006: Major update! Here's TNG: The Complete Second Season.
  • May 25, 2006: Trying to get back in the swing of things, here's TNG Season 2, Episodes 1-5.
  • May 21, 2006: I've revamped the Overview page a bit, making some updates, removing some of the useless information, and streamlining it a bit.
  • May 18, 2006: Finally, I've returned, and here's my review for BSG's "Downloaded."
  • April 25, 2006: Welcome to Jammer's new home at JammersReviews.com. About this move.
  • April 20, 2006: My delays in reviewing have been caused only partially by The Shield.
  • March 3, 2006: Here are reviews for BSG's "Sacrifice" and "The Captain's Hand." The review for "Downloaded" will be along next week.
  • February 22, 2006: And here are the last three episodes of TNG season one.
  • February 21, 2006: Here's a major TNG update, covering Season 1, Episodes 12-22.
  • February 10, 2006: I'm back, just in time to play catch-up. Here are three reviews for BSG's "Epiphanies," "Black Market," and "Scar."
  • February 2, 2006: TNG review update: Season 1, Episodes 8-11.
  • January 26, 2006: I've posted reviews for BSG's two-part mid-season premiere, "Resurrection Ship, Part 1" and "Resurrection Ship, Part 2." Also, I've posted TNG reviews for Episodes 1.2 through 1.7. All that notation means is Season 1, Episode 2 through Season 1, Episode 7. (I'm counting "Encounter at Farpoint" as only one episode.)
  • January 9, 2006: Milestone alert — The hit counter on the main index passed 3,000,000 today. It was installed on March 1, 1997.
  • January 6, 2006: Here's my first posting for 2006 and for the newly opened Star Trek: The Next Generation section — a review of TNG series premiere "Encounter at Farpoint."

2005

  • December 31, 2005: I was really hoping — and fully intending — to have my brief review of "Encounter at Farpoint" ready for posting right now so I could satisfy, in a very perfunctory way, my promise to start the TNG reviewing project before 2005 was over. But real life is simply more important; I'm busy right now, and I'm a few hours short of what I need to get the review done before my end-of-year activities commence. That's the way it goes. My final hours of 2005 are going to be filled with stuff more fun than meeting an arbitrary deadline. The good news is that I will be launching the TNG section in the next week (that is to say, seven days or less — honest), and the breaking of the logjam will mean TNG will become a part of my focus, even alongside Battlestar Galactica, which returns from hiatus next Friday, January 6. In the meantime, as a token of my commitment, the TNG section is officially open for season one, even though actual reviews won't start for several more days. Until then, have a safe and happy new year.
  • December 29, 2005: Well, here it is, only six months late: my final review for Star Trek: Enterprise — the Fourth Season Recap. I'd like to pretend it was worth the wait, but honestly it's nothing you haven't seen before.
  • November 20, 2005:

Following a full six weeks of silence, which is pretty rare on this website, this is just a quick update on where I am and my progress on things.

The Enterprise season four recap is still in the works. Regrettably, I'm not nearly as far along on it as I'd hoped to be. Honestly, it's barely started, because I simply have not been writing the past six weeks. But I am getting back to work and with some vacation time during Thanksgiving week I hope to make some serious headway. The fact of the matter is that it may not be as thorough as in past seasons, because I simply have to get the thing finished.

After that, it's on to The Next Generation. Yes, I had promised that reviews would be "coming in 2005." I still intend to make good on that, although exactly how many reviews for TNG's first season will be written before year's end remains to be seen.

    Stay tuned.

  • October 8, 2005: Here's the review for the Battlestar mid-season finale, "Pegasus."
  • September 29, 2005: I've posted the review for "Flight of the Phoenix."
  • September 15, 2005: Back on schedule, here's the review for "Final Cut."
  • September 11, 2005: I've finally posted the reviews for "Home, Part 1" and "Home, Part 2."
  • September 4, 2005:

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina ongoing in the Gulf Coast region is tragic and harrowing. Much like after 9/11, I've been glued to CNN for hours at a time watching compelling and sad news footage, wondering how many thousand have died and what lies in the future for the displaced living. The notion of New Orleans being evacuated, shut down, and with such a difficult and uncertain road ahead is particularly mind-boggling. I urge everyone to donate to the American Red Cross by following this link or by clicking the banner at the top of the main page.

Anyway, here's a general update on all things review related, since I don't expect to be posting anything for probably a few more days.

Battlestar Galactica: I'm doing my best to not get too far behind. Fortunately, this week there was no new episode, giving me an extra week to get back on track. I should have the reviews for "Home," parts 1 and 2 posted by the time the next new episode airs.

Enterprise: People have been asking me when (and if) to expect the season four recap. Yes, there will be a recap written, but I haven't even started and don't expect to until Battlestar goes on hiatus in a few more weeks. So it may be October before you see my final review for Enterprise.

ST: TNG: Likewise, don't expect to see TNG reviews until after BSG goes on hiatus and the Enterprise recap is written. Sometime before the end of 2005 you'll see TNG reviews start, but I can't be more specific at this point.

  • August 25, 2005: I'm running a full week behind, alas, but here's the review for "The Farm" at last.
  • August 11, 2005: Here's a review for the tough and compelling "Resistance."
  • August 9, 2005: A random look at some bad comedy.
  • August 4, 2005: Here's the review for BSG's "Fragged."
  • July 31, 2005: In my latest revenue experiment, I'm linking to Amazon.com with some product placement links. I'm a frequent customer of Amazon's handy services, and I thought I might try out their associates program. I'm hoping that these links will be useful to anyone who wants to buy Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica DVDs, books, etc., and maybe generate a little revenue in a way that does not compromise the site. After all, if you don't generate revenue from a popular website, you're a fool. (At least, that's what they're always telling us.)
  • July 28, 2005: Here's the review for BSG's "Valley of Darkness."
  • July 20, 2005: Rolling right from one season into the next, here's the review for the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica: "Scattered." Looks like no summer hiatus for me. Also, to those wondering if there will be an ENT season four recap, the answer is yes, but it will be a while. There will not, however, be a BSG season one recap; the season recap tradition ends with Enterprise.
  • July 12, 2005: Here are the reviews for Battlestar's first-season finale, "Kobol's Last Gleaming," Part 1 and Part 2.
  • July 5, 2005: I've posted the review for Battlestar's meaty "Flesh and Bone."
  • June 24, 2005: I've posted the review for Battlestar's "Colonial Day."
  • June 16, 2005: Here's a review for Battlestar's standout offering, "The Hand of God."
  • June 15, 2005: I'm finally jumping on the RSS bandwagon. For details on this new method of delivery, see the RSS information page.
  • June 9, 2005: Well, here it is folks: My major catch-up update. I've posted a review for Battlestar's rerun last week of "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down," and I've posted the last three reviews for Enterprise: "Demons," "Terra Prime," and series finale "These Are the Voyages..." I've also updated the Plain-Text Edition with Battlestar reviews.
  • June 3, 2005: I hate falling behind, and I'm trying to dig myself out of a hole before Battlestar's ongoing schedule buries me. I'm working on the last three reviews for Enterprise, which should all be posted in the next 3-7 days, but to tide you over in the meantime, here are reviews for Battlestar's "Litmus" and "Six Degrees of Separation."
  • May 18, 2005: Due to my recent trip to New York and Enterprise airing two episodes in one week, I find myself suddenly behind on reviews. I hope to catch up soon, but I'm not going to be as timely as in recent weeks, I'm afraid.
  • May 11, 2005: Here's the review for Battlestar's "You Can't Go Home Again."
  • May 6, 2005: I've posted a review for Battlestar's wonderful "Act of Contrition."
  • May 2, 2005: The Battlestar Galactica section of the site is now open! Included as of right now are reviews of the miniseries and first three episodes. Read the introduction for details. Also posted is the review for ENT's "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II."
  • April 25, 2005: That's more like it. Here's "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part I."
  • April 16, 2005: Wow, "Bound" sure was a loser.
  • April 15, 2005: The DVD fundraiser was successful, and surprisingly swift.
  • April 9, 2005: I'm doing an experiment in advertising, seeing if it's worth my while to utilize Google AdSense for some small revenue opportunities. Google ads aren't obtrusive, but if they don't net at least a little bit of revenue, I'll probably pull them. Like I said — an experiment.
  • April 5, 2005: The possibility of ST:TNG reviews is raised with a fundraising effort.
  • March 22, 2005: I mark the site's 10th anniversary with a few words.
  • March 9, 2005: Posted the review for "Divergence."
  • February 25, 2005: Posted the review for "Affliction."
  • February 21, 2005: Here, finally, are the reviews for the three episodes in the trilogy featuring the Romulans and several other Trekkian aliens: "Babel One," "United," and "The Aenar."
  • February 10, 2005: Seeing as a new Enterprise episode is on its way tomorrow and three unwritten reviews will officially constitute a pile-up, I should probably quickly explain where I am and when I'll be back on the reviewing beat. I've found myself idled with a mild review-writing malaise stemming from (1) work getting busy, (2) my distraction with Homicide season 6 and Wire season 2 DVDs, (3) Enterprise being particularly plot-heavy of late and my dread of writing so much synopsis (which, by the way, will likely be pared down noticeably the next few weeks), and most significantly, (4) the excitement surrounding my alma mater's basketball team being top-ranked, undefeated, and simply too fun to miss. A special shout-out to all my fellow Illini folk out there. Also, (5) my attempt to catch up on Battlestar Galactica episodes I've missed, since I think I'm going to become a regular viewer of that series. When will I be caught up with Enterprise? Hopefully not too far in the future.
  • January 28, 2005: I've put up the review for ENT's "Observer Effect."
  • January 20, 2005: And finally, at long last, here's my review for Star Trek: Generations, which completes my Trek movie review series.
  • January 18, 2005: Here's the review for ENT's "Daedalus."
  • January 3, 2005: Let's start the new year out with something really weird.

2004

  • December 15, 2004: And here's the last ENT review of 2004: "Kir'Shara."
  • December 7, 2004: I've posted the review for "Awakening."
  • November 30, 2004: And here's "The Forge."
  • November 29, 2004: Here's "The Augments."
  • November 10, 2004: I've posted reviews for Enterprise's "Borderland" and "Cold Station 12."
  • October 28, 2004: A milestone today, as the counter on the main page surpasses 2,000,000. The counter was activated on March 1, 1997.
  • October 26, 2004: Here's my review for "Home."
  • October 19, 2004: And here's my review for the second half of the season premiere, "Storm Front, Part II." What do you think the likelihood is I can keep up on this timely a schedule?
  • October 12, 2004: Here's the review for Enterprise's season premiere, "Storm Front, Part I."
  • October 1, 2004: My lengthy and thorough recap of Enterprise's third season is now posted.
  • September 17, 2004: Finally available is my review for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
  • September 10, 2004: I've updated the Enterprise indexes/links in preparation for the launch of season four, which will be Friday, October 8. In the meantime, I will be working to get my summer reviews finished. As promised, a review for Star Trek VI will be posted soon; I'm currently in the process of writing it. Once that's posted, I will begin writing the Enterprise third-season recap, to be posted before season four premieres. The review for Star Trek: Generations will depend on a few factors, including the release date of the special edition DVD (which was delayed) and my progress on the other reviews. The Generations review will take a lower priority behind Enterprise reviews if the season starts before I can get to it.
  • July 27, 2004: Here's the latest in my Trek film review series, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
  • June 30, 2004: Well, to my own surprise I managed to just barely make my goal of having these posted by the end of June. Here are reviews for the final three episodes of the Enterprise season: "The Council," "Countdown," and "Zero Hour." My plans for the rest of the summer include the as-promised Star Trek V and Star Trek VI reviews in July and/or August, with an Enterprise season three recap in September just before season four starts up.
  • June 21, 2004: It just figures that three episodes from the end of the season I would get swamped at work and then lose all my writing motivation for an entire month while trying to compile my professional portfolio. But that's what happened and I offer no better explanation. I haven't reviewed the last three episodes of Enterprise because I simply haven't felt like it. That is changing, however. I am recommitting myself to ST:Hypertext this week, which means that with any luck I could have the last three episodes reviewed before June is over. No promises, but an effort will definitely be made.
  • May 12, 2004: Here's the "E2" review.
  • May 5, 2004: Here are reviews for ENT's two excellent outings, "Damage" and "The Forgotten."
  • April 8, 2004: Finally posted my delayed review for ENT's standout offering, "Azati Prime."
  • March 18, 2004: The review for "Azati Prime," as you could've guessed, has been delayed. I'm working on a website redesign project (not for ST:Hypertext) that has been occupying my free time the past couple weeks. That project is nearing completion, so expect the "Azati Prime" review next week.
  • March 4, 2004: I pointlessly review America's Next Top Model the TRAILER for The Apprentice.
  • March 1, 2004: I've posted the review for "Hatchery."
  • February 26, 2004: Here's a new review for ENT's "Doctor's Orders."
  • February 22, 2004: I've created a separate section exclusively for the Trek films.
  • February 20, 2004: Jammer cops to everything in the epic exclusive expose, "Confessions of a Closet Trekkie."
  • February 18, 2004: Here are reviews for the last two ENT episodes, "Stratagem" and "Harbinger."
  • January 30, 2004: A little late, but here are the reviews for ENT's first two eps of the new year, "Chosen Realm" and "Proving Ground." Also, reviews for feature films Trek V and Trek VI will be in the works in the near future.
  • January 8, 2004: Happy New Year! Let's start things off with a brief keyboard missive.

2003

  • December 3, 2003: Here are reviews for the last two ENT eps until January: the ambitious but ponderous "Similitude" and the surprisingly timid "Carpenter Street."
  • November 20, 2003: And so the triology ends — The Matrix Revolutions.
  • November 14, 2003: And here's the review for "North Star."
  • November 12, 2003: Here are reviews for "The Shipment" and "Twilight."
  • October 29, 2003: Review posted for "Exile."
  • October 23, 2003: Counter surpasses 1.5 million hits.
  • October 16, 2003: Here's the review for "Impulse."
  • October 10, 2003: I've posted the review for "Rajiin." My reviewing timeliness may be a little erratic as long as the Cubs are in the postseason, because I won't be missing an inning.
  • October 8, 2003: So I'm sitting here, watching Jay Leno on CNN as he introduces Arnold Schwarzenegger as the governor of California. We live in surreal times. Just think if the Cubs get to the World Series. The world will implode from surreality.
  • September 26, 2003: Season three gives me reason for pessimism with "Extinction."
  • September 24, 2003: Season three gives me reason for optimism with "Anomaly."
  • September 17, 2003: Season three kicks off with "The Xindi."
  • September 9, 2003: Here's my season wrap-up article for Enterprise's second season.
  • August 15, 2003: Here's an article on my viewing habits this summer. The recap for ENT's second season will be posted prior to the start of season three on September 10, but probably not until very near that date.
  • June 30, 2003: A random rant on that Gary Busey thing.
  • June 10, 2003: As promised many months ago, here at last is my Star Trek: Nemesis review. It's very long — more than double the typical review length. I'm not sure why I ended up being so long-winded, but here you go. Don't expect the ENT season recap until well into summer, at the earliest July or August. In the meantime, I'm sure I'll have some other reviews and/or articles that will pop up from time to time here at ST:Hypertext.
  • May 28, 2003: I've posted the review for ENT's shake-up of a season finale, "The Expanse." Also, as promised long ago, a review for Star Trek: Nemesis is finally in the works and should be along soon. Lastly, I put a super-basic "e-mail this page" link at the bottom of the pages. Whether this is useful or not, I leave for you to determine.
  • May 20, 2003: Some new good stuff for you. First, there's a review of the Quiet History Show, "First Flight," then the Silly Sweeps Stunt, "Bounty," and finally the Huge Event Film, The Matrix Reloaded.
  • May 15, 2003: Here's a review for The Matrix. I'm looking forward to The Matrix Reloaded.
  • May 9, 2003: And here you go: "Regeneration."
  • May 7, 2003: There's cause for optimism with ENT's "The Breach" and "Cogenitor."
  • April 24, 2003: And here's the review for ENT's "Horizon."
  • April 16, 2003: Here's the review for ENT's "Judgment."
  • April 9, 2003: I've posted a review for last week's ENT episode, "The Crossing" and a review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which was recently released in a new DVD edition.
  • April 1, 2003: Reality television takes a hold of Star Trek. Story here!
  • March 12, 2003: Here's a new random rant on why the Fox News Channel annoys me.
  • March 3, 2003: Two more reviews for you: "Future Tense" and "Canamar."
  • February 24, 2003: SHAMELESS PLUG — I was recently interviewed by TV Guide concerning my thoughts on Enterprise. The half-hour interview was condensed, to put it mildly, into a single quote that appears on Page 30 of this week's issue (which hit newsstands earlier today; dated March 1-7 on the cover). Pick one up anywhere nationwide.
  • February 19, 2003: Two reviews for the price of one: Here's "Stigma" and "Cease Fire." Also, a note on Nemesis: I had planned a Star Trek: Nemesis review for release around Christmas. I saw the movie opening weekend and planned to see it again so I could get the details in my mind right and write up the review. But then the movie bombed at the box office and stopped playing before I made it back to the cineplex, so I never got to see it again. At this point, alas, I would say not to expect a Nemesis review until sometime after the DVD release in May. It's too far out of my mind for a review the way I'd like to review it. But, rest assured, I will review it eventually.
  • February 5, 2003: And here's "Dawn." The "Stigma" review will be released on a more reasonable schedule.
  • January 30, 2003: I'm decloaking now. Here's "The Catwalk."
  • January 17, 2003: I have not felt particularly motivated to return to the keyboard as of yet in the new year. Between work and play I've been filling my time with things other than review writing; tonight I plan to finally upgrade my home sound system with a new Dolby Digital receiver, DVD changer, and better surround speakers. Installation and optimum configuration among the maze of wires behind my entertainment center will likely take a big bite out of this weekend, so don't expect anything in the next few days. Next week I plan to buckle down again, so don't consider me AWOL just yet.

2002

  • December 30, 2002: There has been no reviewing over the holiday season (I've been spending time with family, friends, and so forth), and I probably won't be back at the keyboard for reviewing until sometime near the end of the week or perhaps later. There will indeed be a Nemesis review eventually, in addition to the review for ENT's "Catwalk." But not just yet. Have a happy new year.
  • December 14, 2002: Read it and weep: "Precious Cargo."
  • December 4, 2002: I've got a review for ENT's "Vanishing Point" now posted.
  • November 22, 2002: The review for ENT's "Singularity" is posted.
  • November 20, 2002: The review for ENT's "The Communicator" is now up.
  • November 13, 2002: I've posted a review for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and also ENT's "The Seventh." I also got sick of the stock tagline I've been using for the site for so long and decided to have some fun with it.
  • November 4, 2002: I've posted my review for ENT's "Marauders." Also, a review of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is indeed in the works.
  • October 18, 2002: Read all about that embarrassment that was ENT's "A Night in Sickbay."
  • October 17, 2002: Review for ENT's "Dead Stop" now up.
  • October 14, 2002: Here's a review for ENT's "Minefield," and also a strange epitaph.
  • October 13, 2002: Hit counter surpasses 1.1 million.
  • September 29, 2002: FYI, ST:Hypertext was down this weekend as a result of the Trek Nation's data being moved to servers at another physical location. Sorry for any inconvenience.
  • September 28, 2002: The review for "Carbon Creek" is now available.
  • September 20, 2002: Boo-yah — "Shockwave, Part II." I hope to maintain a more timely review schedule this season; this is more like it.
  • September 18, 2002: Just in the friggin' nick of time, Jammer's reviews for ENT season one are finished and posted. Here's a way-long-delayed review for "Fusion," as well as my comprehensive season roundup article, the First Season Recap. Season two of Enterprise begins ... uh, right now.
  • September 8, 2002: Where did the summer go? It's going to be a close call as to whether I'll have my season one materials wrapped up before season two on Enterprise starts in 10 days on Wednesday, September 18. I still have the season recap to write (which is miles away from being finished) as well as my long-delayed review of "Fusion." It wouldn't be a problem if not for the myriad of Real Life things to juggle simultaneously. I'm hoping I'll be finished (particularly since being done would allow season two reviews to get off on the right foot schedule-wise), but these next few weeks are going to be mighty busy indeed.
  • August 31, 2002: A non-Trek TV topic: I've posted a rant on MTV's "Sorority Life."
  • August 26, 2002: A long-delayed review for ENT's "Shadows of P'Jem" has been posted.
  • August 15, 2002: The new design for Star Trek: Hypertext has been unveiled! This marks perhaps the most significant and intensive redesign in this site's history, following about a month of continuous work. Even so, this redesign doesn't hugely affect the way the site actually works, though it should provide a nice facelift. For complete details, please read the design comments. In conjunction with this redesign, I've also posted my review of the new Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan director's edition DVD, as well as posted my upated comment regarding TNG reviews. Also, we're opening a small book review section, which will see occasional but hopefully regular attention in the future, featuring reviews by guest writer Chris Cook.
  • July 22, 2002: Happy summer hiatus. One might be wondering where my missing two Enterprise reviews are and where the ENT season recap is at the moment. The answer is: They aren't finished. Okay, I can't lie: They aren't even started. So don't expect them anytime soon. I'm actually hard at work on another project, namely a complete overhaul of this website's two-year-old design. "Complete overhaul" means pretty much every page on the site will be affected and will thus create for me a very time-consuming task, even though much of the design philosophy won't be radically changed. But you can expect a noticeable facelift in the coming weeks, probably early or mid-August. Until then, expect it to stay fairly quiet here at Star Trek: Hypertext.
  • July 2, 2002: My final words on Andromeda's season is here, in the form of my Second Season Recap.
  • June 28, 2002: And finally, here's my review for ENT's impressive season finale, "Shockwave."
  • June 21, 2002: Finally, a new review — ENT's "Two Days and Two Nights." More to come!
  • June 18, 2002: 1,000,000. That's a big number. Of course, it took over five years to get there. But hey, I like celebrating nice round numbers, so here you are — my millionth logged main-page hit since the counter was enacted way back on March 1, 1997. A shout-out to Eric G. of Austin, TX, for being the millionth satisfied customer logged. Also, an update on delayed reviews: Still working on them. I've made some progress; just not quite ready to post. Stay tuned.
  • June 9, 2002: DELAYS — Reviews for ENT's last two episodes of the season are in the works; both will most likely be available sometime in the coming week. After that will be back reviews for "Shadows of P'Jem" and "Fusion," followed much later by the season recaps for both ENT and ANDR. Thanks for your patience.
  • May 25, 2002: Review time! For ANDR: "The Knight, Death, and the Devil," "Immaculate Perception," and season finale "Tunnel at the End of the Light." For ENT: "Fallen Hero" and "Desert Crossing."
  • May 7, 2002: I'm making some headway on catch-up reviews. Here's ENT's "Detained" and "Vox Sola."
  • May 5, 2002: New reviews up for ANDR's "The Fair Unknown" and "Belly of the Beast."
  • April 18, 2002: Reviews are up for ENT's "Oasis" and ANDR's "The Things We Cannot Change."
  • April 6, 2002: I've finally got the review for ANDR's "Bunker Hill" posted.
  • April Fools Day: So why did I decide to revisit All Your Base Are Belong To Us a whole year after the height of its popularity? Because I wanted to, that's why. I found it funny again and that's just the way it goes. Because somebody set up us the bomb. If you missed it the first time around and don't get it, visit the website and read the backstory. Cats demands it of you.
  • March 30, 2002: The review for ENT's lame "Acquisition" is now up.
  • March 25, 2002: Review for ENT's "Rogue Planet" is posted. You know what really needs to go far, far away right now, as in immediately? Those awful, awful Verizon TV commercials with that guy who says: "Can you hear me now? Good." I might be forced to commit a homicide if those ads are allowed to exist much longer.
  • March 17, 2002: Off the subject of Trek, I've posted a review of "9/11," the compelling documentary that aired on CBS a week ago. Delayed Trek reviews should hopefully resume shortly.
  • March 10, 2002: The index page hit counter surpasses 0.9 million, also known as 900,000.
  • March 6, 2002: Posted the review for ANDR's "In Heaven Now Are Three."
  • February 25, 2002: Scrape the bottom of the barrel with ANDR's "Dance of the Mayflies."
  • February 21, 2002: Review now available for ANDR's "Be All My Sins Remembered."
  • February 19, 2002: I've reviewed ENT's "Shuttlepod One." The erratic reviewing order is hopefully not too annoying, but I wanted this review to be somewhat timely. The delayed reviews for ENT's "Shadows of P'Jem" and ANDR's "Bunker Hill" will be along eventually.
  • February 12, 2002: Review now available for ANDR's "Lava and Rockets."
  • February 8, 2002: Review now available for ENT's "Sleeping Dogs."
  • February 6, 2002: I've posted reviews for the excellent "Dear Doctor" (ENT) and the lamentable "Ouroboros" (ANDR). The review for "Sleeping Dogs" and the temporarily skipped-over "Bunker Hill" will be along soon.
  • January 31, 2002: The review is finally posted for ANDR's "Into the Labyrinth."
  • January 27, 2002: Lest I already start falling behind in the new year, I'm posting reviews for ENT's "Silent Enemy" and ANDR's "The Prince." I have temporarily skipped over "Into the Labyrinth"; that review is in progress but incomplete.
  • January 12, 2002: I've posted my very belated review for ENT's "Cold Front."
  • January 10, 2002: New episodes start back up next week, so that means I need to get in gear and make good on my promise to have the "Cold Front" and "Into the Labyrinth" reviews posted sometime this millennium. I finally got back to work on review writing today after taking a break the last few weeks. (I know: I should've taken the break AFTER writing those last two reviews, but so it goes; I had other things I wanted to do.) Anyway, I should have something new up in the coming days, certainly before Wednesday's new Enterprise airs.

2001

  • December 27, 2001: I've posted what was an unexpected review as I turn back to writing: Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director's Edition as seen on DVD.
  • December 21, 2001: As you've probably noticed, the reviews for "Into the Labyrinth" and "Cold Front" have been delayed. They won't be posted until sometime next week, probably after Christmas. Have a happy holiday season!
  • December 5, 2001: I've posted the review for ENT's "Fortunate Son." Also, I've fixed the search engine — which had been nonfunctional for a few weeks — by signing up through a different search service, FreeFind.
  • December 3, 2001: I've posted the review for ANDR's "Home Fires."
  • November 28, 2001: Reviews for ANDR's "All Too Human" and "Una Salus Victus" are both available now. A review for ENT's "Fortunate Son" should be posted tomorrow. (NOT!)
  • November 26, 2001: Hit counter surpasses hit No. 800,000.
  • November 21, 2001: Three new reviews posted, for ENT's "The Andorian Incident," "Breaking the Ice," and "Civilization."
  • November 7, 2001: Review for ANDR's "Last Call at the Broken Hammer" is posted.
  • November 1, 2001: Review for ANDR's "Pitiless as the Sun" is now posted.
  • October 30, 2001: Review for ENT's "Terra Nova" is now posted.
  • October 25, 2001: Review for ENT's "Unexpected" now available.
  • October 23, 2001: New ANDR reviews: "Exit Strategies" and "A Heart for Falsehood Framed."
  • October 17, 2001: I'm officially marking this day on the calendar: Jammer Caught-Up Day. With my posting of reviews for Enterprise's "Fight or Flight" and "Strange New World," I have all outstanding reviews done, aside from episodes that have aired within the past few days. How long I stay caught up remains to be seen, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time since early January that I've had all my back reviews posted and can get back on something resembling a timely schedule. I feel very, very relieved. To celebrate today's momentous occasion, I'm going to go out and consume large quantities of beer.
  • October 10, 2001: Posted now — my review for Andromeda's flawed by very entertaining season premiere, "The Widening Gyre."
  • October 9, 2001: Here's my review for the adequate series premiere of Enterprise, "Broken Bow."
  • October 3, 2001: And a very big "WHEW" from me. Posted now is the last review for ANDR's first season, "The Devil Take the Hindmost," as well as my lengthy in-depth look at season one ANDR — the First Season Recap. If only this had been done two months ago I might actually feel good about it. Okay, I feel good about it anyway. Thank heavens I'm almost caught up, save my "Broken Bow" review, which I'll be working on next.
  • September 29, 2001: I've posted long-delayed reviews for ANDR's "Harper 2.0" and "Forced Perspective," making me much more confident I'll have all ANDR reviews posted before the second-season premiere airs a week from now in my area.
  • September 26, 2001: Enterprise premieres tonight at 8/7c on UPN. Are you ready for a new season? I am ... barely. I'm still working hard to get these remaining ANDR reviews (including the season recap in its entirety) done in the next week.
  • September 19, 2001: I've opened the Enterprise section and the second-season section for Andromeda. ENT, of course, premieres next week, with ANDR premiering the following week. I'm still working to finish up season one ANDR reviews and hope to have everything finished and posted (yes, even the season recap; keeping my fingers crossed) before ANDR's new season begins.
  • September 14, 2001: The nation mourns a terrible tragedy.
  • August 25, 2001: Finally, some new reviews for long-ago-aired Andromeda shows: "The Mathematics of Tears" and "Music of a Distant Drum."
  • August 9, 2001:

ANNOUNCEMENT — This is a brief announcement, but a big one nonetheless: I will be reviewing the new, fifth Star Trek series, Enterprise. The show premieres on UPN on Wednesday, September 26, at 8/7c, in the United States. I have no idea about non-U.S. airdates; international Jammer Review readers will have to do their own research into the matter. TrekToday will undoubtedly keep tabs on the international information for Enterprise airings.

With this announcement also comes a minor redesign of this site's main page — call it the 2001 mini-redesign. I've made space for the Enterprise logo and moved it and the Andromeda logo to the top of the review list, making them the primary focus since they have the most amount of current newsworthiness. I've also done some other minor shuffling (to keep the spatial layout of the page balanced), including the addition of a "miscellaneous" highlight area and the addition of TrekToday headlines to the main page.

Also, my final words on Star Trek: Voyager, the Seventh Season Recap, is now available.

And lastly, I still plan to post the remaining season one ANDR reviews before the fall season begins.

  • July 21, 2001: Main-page hit counter surpasses 700,000.
  • July 16, 2001: It's a wrap for Voyager. The long-delayed review for "Repentance" and the series finale, "Endgame," are finally available.
  • July 10, 2001: The "Endgame" is almost ready for posting. It and the "Repentance" review should be posted hopefully by the weekend.
  • June 18, 2001: Yes, I know it's been nearly four weeks now since "Endgame" aired. Rest assured, I'm on it. And hopefully the "Repentance" review (remember that one?) will be posted soon too.
  • June 6, 2001: Apologies for the delay. Reviews for ANDR's "It Makes a Lovely Light" and the overblown season finale, "Its Hour Come 'Round At Last," are now available.
  • May 22, 2001: Three new reviews: VOY's "Homestead" and "Renaissance Man"; ANDR's "Star-Crossed." More reviews to come soon!
  • May 8, 2001: New reviews: VOY's "Natural Law" and ANDR's "The Honey Offering" and "The Sum of its Parts."
  • April 30, 2001: From various parts of the spectrum: I've posted new reviews for VOY's excellent "Author, Author," ANDR's lousy "Fear and Loathing in the Milky Way," and VOY's middling "Friendship One."
  • April 26, 2001: E-MAIL ANNOUNCEMENT — I don't like changing e-mail addresses. It's a pain, and I like having a stable location where I can get my e-mail. But I've had it up to here. I haven't been able to check my mail at [email protected] for three days straight now. This is totally unacceptable, and my e-mail has been unacceptably erratic for about six months now, thanks to the ultra-crap service of AllInfoSys.com, where the domain is hosted. Officially, I'm now saying that all e-mail should be sent to me through [email protected] or [email protected] (they are essentially the same since the st-hypertext mail forwards straight to my Verizon account). Do not bother sending any more mail to [email protected], because these days it seems there's a decent chance I'll never see it. I will be going through and changing my contact address on key places here on the site. If you've sent mail to me at epsico in the past few days, send it again to st-hypertext. Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience on behalf of the incompetence of AllInfoSys. (And BTW, some new reviews will be posted this weekend.)
  • April 14, 2001: I've posted the review for the zzzzzz-worthy "Q2."
  • April 11, 2001: From the Missed Deadline Dept. — Yeah, I did originally say today for the "Repentance" review. Well, it ain't gonna happen. (Besides, would I be me if I was right twice in a row concerning the expected post dates for delayed reviews?) Not to worry — this shouldn't set me back any further. The most likely scenario is that I will write reviews for "Repentance" and "Q2" and post them both about the same time, probably during the weekend.
  • April 7, 2001: RETURN OF THE JEDI JAMMER: Welcome to ST:Hypertext's belated first major update of 2001. I promised I would in fact return — I only wish it hadn't been so long in coming. But hopefully with this mega-update — which brings me almost completely up to date on Voyager — will have been worth the wait. If not, well, too damn bad, because these reviews are still free. Apologies for my April Fool's prank; I figured I might as well take advantage of the fact I've been so quiet so far this year. Anyway, dig into a stretch of VOY with "Lineage," "Prophecy," "The Void," "Workforce" (Parts I and II), and "Human Error." A review of the temporarily skipped-over "Repentance" will be posted on or before Wednesday, which is when the new episode "Q2" airs. Andromeda, I fear, is going to take second priority for the rest of the season (I simply can't overlook the fact that this is Voyager's final season), but I will be catching up ASAP on those reviews as well. It's nice to be back! Also today — the counter passes 600,000 hits!
  • March 24, 2001: I'd hoped to have new reviews for you by now, but I was in Las Vegas all of last week, and then, after my return, this week dumped a new crisis on me when I had a computer software system crash that forced me to rebuild my system setup from the ground up. I've spent basically all week reloading my software and re-customizing my computer. So ... sorry, no new reviews — still. But I do have a new off-topic gripe column if you're interested in my take on the XFL.
  • March 5, 2001: Greetings, and welcome to the most silent opening months of a new year this website has probably seen since its creation. This is just a note to verify that (1) yes, I'm very much alive; (2) no, I haven't abandoned the reviewing beat; and (3) I unfortunately have no new reviews for you at the moment, though I have several that are in the works. Being this far behind sucks beyond all comprehension, let me tell you. I don't like it, but at the same time I have other events in life taking priority at the moment. I'm hoping for a stabilization in the coming weeks. And especially with reruns on both the VOY and ANDR fronts, I intend to make some significant catching-up headway before new episodes return. Believe me, I'm very aware that this is Voyager's final season, and very aware that I'm about 500 reviews behind. But I have hope and determination that I will catch up in a halfway timely fashion. I hope that you will hang in there with me through my unplanned hiatus, and will still be here when I return with new material. It might very well be this week, though no promises just yet.
  • February 19, 2001: At last, I'm back from the dead with at least one new review (ANDR's "The Pearls That Were His Eyes"), though it's from weeks ago and I admit that since I'm about a bazillion reviews behind that's only scratching the surface of my catching up. I will be working as much as possible this week to turn out as many catch-up reviews as I can.
  • February 16, 2001: I ... am so ... screwed. :)
  • February 6, 2001:

Welcome to my first delay announcement of the new year. Yippee. Real-life constraints have had me out of the reviewing loop for the past two weeks, I'm sorry to report. I will be returning to the keyboard soon, and hope to be catching up gradually, though I know better than to guess exact dates, since every self-deadline I set manages to get missed. Stay tuned.

Also, in an unrelated matter, my column at Space.com (as well as the syndication of my reviews) has been suspended indefinitely. It would seem they are having business/financial issues and can no longer afford to pay most of their sci-fi review freelancers, so I've essentially been laid off. The Deeper Side of Trek may someday return, either at Space.com or here — it's hard to say — but at the moment I honestly can't spare the time without the monetary incentive.

  • January 23, 2001: I've put up my review for VOY's "Shattered."
  • January 20, 2001: Happy un-hiatus! Review for ANDR's "All Great Neptune's Ocean" is up.
  • January 8, 2001: Feeling the need to vent, I've posted an off-topic harangue on the stupid-looking "Temptation Island."
  • January 6, 2001: Happy New Year! Effective immediately, my backup e-mail address is changing. I ask that you continue to send e-mail to [email protected] as usual. But if for some reason that address is not working, send e-mail to my new backup address at [email protected]. Effective immediately, I am abandoning my e-mail address at att.net. Any e-mails sent there will go unanswered, and as my service eventually expires, incoming mail there will probably bounce.

2000

  • December 28, 2000: My long-delayed review for ANDR's "The Ties That Blind" is finally available. This means I'm officially caught up and there will be no new reviews until new episodes resume in mid-January. However, look for a return of my column, The Deeper Side of Trek, in a few days.
  • December 13, 2000: The review for VOY's best effort yet this season, "Flesh and Blood," is now available.
  • December 7, 2000: E-MAIL PROBLEMS, continued: Between Friday and early this morning, e-mail was not being processed through my regular e-mail address. This is due to continued problems with Epsico.com's hosting provider, which I'm not particularly happy about. All mail sent during that six-day period, as far as I know, was bounced back to the sender as undeliverable. The e-mail problem seems to be fixed for the time being, but remember that if you can't contact me through my normal address you should use the backup address [email protected]. As always, watch the notices here for details. In an unrelated matter, I expect my backup e-mail address will be changing in the next 30 days; I will post that info when it happens. Also, I've posted the review for ANDR's ultra-weak "A Rose in the Ashes."
  • December 4, 2000: The review for VOY's "Nightingale" is now up.
  • November 30, 2000: I've posted the ANDR review for "The Banks of the Lethe." Note: I have temporarily skipped over "The Ties That Blind" and will post that review later in the week.
  • November 27, 2000: Thanksgiving has come and gone, and I'm thankful for finally getting some reviews posted. I've got three new reviews for you: ANDR's "Double Helix" and "Angel Dark, Demon Bright," and VOY's "Body and Soul." Whew. Plenty more to come, hopefully soon. I'll be much more thankful in another week or so when reruns will afford me a real break. It's been one hectic November.
  • November 20, 2000: As you probably noticed, I'm behind on ANDR reviews. And yes, I'm catching up, slowly but surely. Stay tuned.
  • November 15, 2000: MAIL UPDATE — Early this morning my e-mail at [email protected] came back on-line, so please resume sending mail to that address, unless you find you still have problems, at which point you can use the backup address.
  • November 14, 2000: MAIL PROBLEMS — Since approximately 11:30 a.m. CST (GMT -0500) on Monday, my e-mail server has not been accepting incoming mail. All e-mail, to my knowledge, has been bouncing. I do not know why this is, and attempts to contact my hosting provider have so far been unsuccessful. If you want to e-mail me, send mail [email protected] until further notice. Please keep checking back here for an all-clear update on my real address, because the Worldnet address is my backup and I intend to go back to my Epsico.com e-mail once the problem has been resolved. If in the past 36 hours you've sent e-mail that has bounced, I apologize; please try my backup address. And here's a pair of reviews for you at last: VOY's "Critical Care" and "Inside Man."
  • November 11, 2000: So where are the new reviews? They're in progress. I've fallen a bit behind, as you may have noticed. The main reason: Election Day. Since I work at a newspaper I had certain preparations I had to make for the election, which has turned out to be one of the most interesting elections we could probably ever hope to see. I hope to get back on track soon; until then, your patience is appreciated.
  • November 10, 2000: A milestone — ST:Hypertext gets its half-millionth main-page download since the installation of the counter on March 1, 1997. Thanks for being repeat customers everyone!
  • November 7, 2000: My latest Deeper Side column is available, looking at the crossroads status of the franchise as Series V remains a mystery.
  • October 30, 2000: The review for ANDR's "D Minus Zero" is up.
  • October 27, 2000: New review for VOY's "Repression" now available.
  • October 24, 2000: I've posted the review for VOY's "Drive."
  • October 19, 2000: The review for ANDR's first major stumble, "To Loose the Fateful Lightning" is now available.
  • October 18, 2000: The review for VOY's "Imperfection" is up.
  • October 12, 2000: The review for ANDR's second half of the series premiere, "An Affirming Flame," is now up.
  • October 9, 2000: I've posted the review for VOY's season premiere, "Unimatrix Zero, Part II." Also, I've finally gotten around to setting up a simple search engine that will search ST:Hypertext for user-specified keywords. This is set up with freepolls.com IntraSearch, which is quick to configure and very easy to customize. If you need a simple site-searching tool and don't feel like messing with CGI scripts, I recommend this one based on my short experience so far! (Note: When entering multiple words in the search field, the engine automatically assumes Boolean "and.")
  • October 6, 2000: My latest, somewhat pithier Deeper Side column, this one on Trek warfare, has been posted over at Space.com. I am of course also working on the VOY season premiere review.
  • October 5, 2000: Hit counter surpasses 475,000 hits.
  • October 3, 2000: Welcome to the beginning of review season! Let's start it off with the series premiere of ANDR, "Under the Night." As always, beware significant SPOILERS, especially since this review is coming out well before the show is airing in most markets.
  • September 28, 2000: You can take your pick depending upon how cynical and/or anti-"The Man" you are. Today is what I'm opting to call either Long-Deferred Payday or Jammer Sellout Day. (You can choose your favorite.) The reason for this is because I've just closed a deal that will make my Voyager and Andromeda reviews this season available via syndication through Space.com. Do not fret, however, because reviews will be posted as usual here at ST:Hypertext (as well as through the Review Mailer) in addition to over at Space.com. (In fact, I could've gotten paid more if I'd granted exclusive printing rights to Space.com, but I wouldn't presume for one second to do that to the faithful readers of ST:Hypertext. This will still be the official site of the Jammer Review.) Review formats will not be changing for VOY; the format for ANDR remains to be seen and will be determined once I've seen the premiere. I'd expect it would be similar in format to the VOY reviews. Versions of my reviews at Space.com will be subject to editing, and therefore might not be exactly the same as the versions posted here. I thought I'd clear the air here by putting it on record — that way we can avoid possible confusion once the reviewing season gets under way here in the next week.
  • September 19, 2000: A new edition of Deeper Side has been posted. Another somewhat lightweight column, this takes a look at Trek technology.
  • September 14, 2000: Opening day! The Andromeda section here at ST:Hypertext is officially open. My Andromeda introduction article is now available here as well as over at SlipstreamWeb. I've also put up the Voyager season seven page and updated all the menus accordingly. On a more personal note, in addition to openings, I'd also like to announce the official closing of the long-inactive JCF, with a series-finale posting. Find out what I mean by clicking here.
  • September 13, 2000: We're approaching season premiere time. My introduction to Andromeda and an interview have been put up over at SlipstreamWeb.
  • September 1, 2000: The latest installment of Deeper Side is available. This one is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek look at Trek's lack of the non-elite.
  • August 17, 2000: The second installment in my Deeper Side of Trek column series is now available over at Space.com. This installment looks at the Star Trek movies.
  • August 4, 2000: My new biweekly column series, The Deeper Side of Trek, has been launched over in the sci-fi section at Space.com, with the first of hopefully many-to-come installments having been posted. This first edition serves as an introduction, and provides an important definition of "the franchise" as I see it.
  • August 1, 2000: I've got some stuff in the works. With any luck, there should be at least one new article posted here (and perhaps more) within the next week.
  • July 18, 2000: Counter surpasses the 450,000 mark.
  • July 7, 2000:

So who says summer rerun season had to be boring around here?

Where to begin... First with the new look: Welcome to the new-millennium edition of Star Trek:Hypertext (yes, we can still cash in on The Year 2000 Cliché even halfway through the year). After almost 18 months of the previous design, I decided it was time for another website redesign. Most of the changes are cosmetic and not exactly huge; I've changed the primary font to the more modern-looking and always-popular Verdana on many of the info pages (though I've opted to leave the review text alone). I've also updated the logos and headers to be a little sleeker.

The most dramatic change is on the main page, where I've tried to fix some of the clunkiness in the old design by continuing the widespread design trend of cramming as much text into as little space as possible, while still doing so in a way that's attractive and readable. Also note the more "aggressive" style of the design. Yes, it's the new sports car edition of ST:Hypertext. The ads are also more logically located at the top, rather than under the logo where they used to interrupt the page's flow. Personally, I like it all a lot better. I hope you do, too. Comments of course are welcome, as long as they're positive! (Just kidding — though I won't be making major reversals if you don't like it; sorry.) Change is good. Really. Rest assured that I've kept the overall design philosophy the same, and a great many things (most, really) have been retained. Like the January 1999 redesign, more is the same than is different.

There are some other minor changes to some of the infrastructure formatting (the Trek movie review pages have gotten some new design attention), as well as updated text on various pages like the copyright page, FAQ, and overview. It's not worth a blow-by-blow; just know that I spent a good chunk of time on little things that you might not even notice (like "top" links at the bottoms of pages, etc.) but these probably needed attention from a person who claims to be a self-respecting, responsible Web editor. Should you notice any broken links or such, please drop me an e-mail at [email protected].

Next order of business is an announcement. After months of toying with the idea, I've decided that, barring a major change in my schedule in the next few months, I will be reviewing Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda when it premieres this fall. Either I'm a masochist or I'm just looking for something fresh on TV so I can go back to my days of reviewing two series instead of one (yes, I will of course also still be reviewing Voyager). How exactly these new reviews will look remains to be seen. The format may be somewhat shorter — who knows. I won't know until I dive into the actual task of writing them. Starting from ground zero should be interesting and somewhat challenging. I hope you'll join me in trying out this new sci-fi series.

This might also explain why I've changed the subtitle under my main logo to say "extensive reviews of Trek episodes and other sci-fi." Andromeda is likely to comprise the bulk of the "other sci-fi," but I also hope to include semi-frequent reviews of non-Trek sci-fi movies (and possibly other fantasy or genre pictures). To jump-start this idea, I've written and posted a review of the recent animated sci-fi adventure Titan A.E. I've also ported over several sci-fi reviews from the now-defunct Jammer's Movie Reviews website, which never got off the ground because of a lack of time and the simple fact that I just didn't go to enough movies. These materials can be found in the miscellaneous section, which I hope will be more active in the future. (Look for a review of X-Men after it's released.)

I have also finished writing up my Los Angeles trip report. Finally, at long last, Days 2 and 3 are now posted, along with photos from those days and also Day 1. I should warn you, however, that Days 2 and 3 (especially 3) are not nearly as interesting as Day 1 (which is partially why I've been putting them off so long). Day 1 is what the article was about. The other two days are simply like a free bonus prize. So if it's a matter of it "being worth the wait" and it now going on four months since I actually went to L.A., then I hope you aren't disappointed. The photos, I'm guessing, are probably what will be of most interest.

And finally, I'll mention that I'll be writing some summer feature articles about Trek (and possibly other sci-fi topics) in the course of this rerun season, beginning in the next couple weeks. Interestingly, these articles will not be posted here at ST:Hypertext but instead over at Space.com, where I'll be a columnist in the sci-fi section. I'm looking forward to it, and will post links here whenever I have new material up.

So summer used to be a time when I'd get a break, but it seems that this summer I'm likely to be nearly as busy here at ST:Hypertext (and Space.com) as I typically am during the fall. Stay tuned!

  • June 12, 2000: I've posted my very lengthy and thorough Sixth Season Recap article for VOY. With this finished, I do indeed still intend to post the rest of my L.A. trip report. Keep an eye out the next few weeks.
  • May 28, 2000: The review for the VOY season finale, "Unimatrix Zero," is now available. Now that the season is over, I will be working on a sixth season commentary (to be posted sometime in the next month or two, hopefully sooner than later), as well as finishing my L.A. trip report and posting additional photos as I promised. Stay tuned!
  • May 23, 2000: It's technically Tuesday morning, but I'm calling it Monday night (and therefore in compliance with my promise) because I haven't gone to sleep yet. Here are reviews covering both ends of the spectrum — "Life Line" and "The Haunting of Deck Twelve."
  • May 21, 2000: I know I said Sunday night, but something came up. Give me another day.
  • May 20, 2000: Apologies for the delays. Fortunately, reviews for both "Life Line" and "The Haunting of Deck Twelve" should be posted sometime Sunday evening.
  • May 8, 2000: I've posted the review for VOY's sorely disappointing "Fury."
  • May 7, 2000: I've finally posted the review for the intriguingly self-reflective "Muse." My continued report on Los Angeles is being postponed for the time being. I plan to get "Fury" to you in a more timely fashion.
  • April 26, 2000: I've finally posted a significant chunk of my personal travel report of my trip to Los Angeles in March. This is a totally self-centered article (but definitely on-topic) that I've been writing off and on since mid-March (in between long bouts of procrastination — you know me). There will be more on the rest of my trip posted in another week or so, but the most interesting Trek-related parts are in the segments I've posted now. And the new run of episodes, the last batch for the season, has begun. I've posted my review for "Live Fast and Prosper."
  • April 2, 2000: It has come to my attention that some e-mail sent to [email protected] has bounced. Unfortunately, I have no idea how frequently this has been happening, because from my end my e-mail account seems to be working normally — I've still been getting e-mail every day. If you have sent me mail at epsico.com that has been rejected and returned to you, please let me know by sending another message to my backup address, [email protected]. I would greatly appreciate it so I can learn about and solve any possible e-mail problem. Note: Please use that address only in the event that mail sent to epsico.com has FAILED. Continue sending to [email protected] unless you have received rejected, returned e-mail. If it's a matter of me simply having not yet answered your e-mail, it's probably a case of my procrastination allowing it to sit in my inbox more than a case of technical difficulties. Thanks.
  • Also on April 2, 2000: The 400,000th hit on the main index has been logged!
  • March 26, 2000: This is a first as far as I know, but a Brazilian Webmaster has translated my "Good Shepherd" review into a Portuguese version.
  • March 20, 2000: AT LAST! Jammer gets caught up and you get a slew of reviews! VOY's "Ashes to Ashes," "Child's Play," and "Good Shepherd" are now all posted. Enjoy!
  • March 13, 2000: DELAYS — Yes, there'd be delays here at good ol' Jammer's Review. (Nah, c'mon, me?) But I have a good reason. I was out of town for three days, and was way busy before that. I'll be working this week to get caught up again. I'll also be working to catch up on backlogged e-mail. I'm about 40 behind, which for me is quite a bit since I'm generally on top of e-mail. If you requested a response and still haven't gotten one, I will be responding; it's just a matter of getting caught up.
  • March 7, 2000: Star Trek: Hypertext celebrates FIVE YEARS on the Web! I've posted a brief retrospective about some of the changes this site has gone through over the years. Also note: There's a very good chance the "Ashes to Ashes" review will be significantly delayed (possibly into next week). I've got a lot going on this week (which you'll probably hear plenty more about in the near future) and I'll be out of town from Thursday through the weekend. I've also been preparing for this weekend trip and haven't yet gotten around to the "Ashes" review. I sincerely doubt I'll have time to write on Wednesday, so the review will not be posted until after I return. On the upside, my local UPN affiliate DID finally begin broadcasting last week, so from now on (except this week, since I'll be busy) I will actually see Voyager on Wednesdays. This means when things get back to normal I'll actually be posting reviews earlier — possibly as early as the weekend immediately after the airing. Can you believe it? That's okay, because I don't ... yet. :)
  • February 28, 2000: Actually somewhat more timely for a change: VOY's off-its-rocker "Spirit Folk." If all goes well, I might actually get to see Voyager this Wednesday on our area's new UPN affiliate. This might mean more consistently earlier reviews, since I'll no longer have to wait until Saturdays to see the episodes.
  • February 25, 2000: Here you go, a little late: VOY's "Collective."
  • February 16, 2000: Are you ready for a smackdown? Because VOY's "Tsunkatse" is here.
  • February 10, 2000: I've put up the VOY "Memorial" review.
  • February 2, 2000: The review for VOY's "Virtuoso" is now posted.
  • January 27, 2000: The review for VOY's "Blink of an Eye" is now available.
  • January 20, 2000: I've posted the review for VOY's "Fair Haven," as well as an off-topic film review of Supernova.
  • January 13, 2000: Jammer checking in — It's been a nice little break, I must say. But Voyager has returned with a new episode, "Fair Haven," which I will be reviewing after I see it on Saturday. The new year has still not brought with it the long-promised UPN affiliate to my area, so first viewings for me will still not be until Saturdays, and posting reviews will not be until several days after those Saturday airings. It also seems the Lives of Dax book review will probably not be posted until after I've also started back up on the Voyager reviewing. (I've taken a break from the book as well.) Not to worry, though, because I'll be back to work soon enough.

1999

  • December 30, 1999: There's not much activity here on the site at the moment. I'm reading the anthology novel, The Lives of Dax, which I will review sometime in early or mid-January. I also have a couple other Trek-related articles I'd like to write in the coming weeks, but we'll see how much time I can find. In the meantime, there's been PLENTY going on in December to supply me with new, frustrating JCF material — enough to drive me insane. Anyway, have a safe and happy New Year's celebration, and I'll see you in January!
  • December 29, 1999: Main-page counter surpasses 350,000 hits.
  • December 11, 1999: I've finally posted the "Pathfinder" review. It was finished yesterday, but I was running around and didn't have time to post it. Excuses, excuses. Hey, I'm all about excuses.
  • December 9, 1999: Sorry about the delay in the "Pathfinder" review. For some reason I felt the need to waste a lot of time this past week and put my free time to less constructive use. (That's what I love about being my own boss for this site — I make the rules and set the deadlines. <grin>) The review is actually almost done, but I'm not going to be finishing it up until sometime tomorrow evening.
  • December 1, 1999: Posted the review for VOY's "The Voyager Conspiracy."
  • November 28, 1999: Posted the review for VOY's "One Small Step."
  • November 26, 1999: From the "just so you know I'm still here" dept. — I've been spending time with friends and family during this Thanksgiving week. I've been working on the "One Small Step" review, but it's not quite ready. Hopefully it'll be up sometime this weekend, but I'm busy with other things tonight and I'll be going out of town tomorrow, so we'll see. I'm exercising my "holiday deadline extension" prerogative, so there. :)
  • November 18, 1999: I have posted the review for VOY's "Dragon's Teeth."
  • November 10, 1999: Posted review for VOY's "Riddles."
  • November 6, 1999: Exercising Webmaster's prerogative, I've posted an off-topic article, "Try, Try Again, NBC." I still am not seeing Voyager until Saturdays (our UPN affiliate is still not broadcasting, and the nearest station that carries VOY carries it later in the week because it is a WB affiliate), so new reviews will not be typically posted until several days after the Saturday airing in my area.
  • October 27, 1999: Posted the review for VOY's "Alice."
  • October 25, 1999: The review for VOY's amusing "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy" has been posted.
  • October 19, 1999: Posted the review for VOY's terrific "Barge of the Dead."
  • October 15, 1999: Sigh... I really wanted the "Barge of the Dead" review posted tonight, but it just ain't gonna happen. This is a complex episode that deserves a complex critique, and in order to write what I want to say I won't be able to make this particular deadline. I will not be writing any more tonight, and I will be out of town on Saturday, so I will not be working on the review again until Sunday, when I hope to have some dedicated writing time for a change (and can also hopefully view and get back on track for a more timely review of "Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy.") Sorry, folks, and thanks for putting up with my frequently inaccurate time estimates.
  • October 13, 1999: VOY's "Survival Instinct" review has at last been posted. I'm sorry for the delay beyond the expected delay. I had a problem with my phone and, thus, a problem logging in to update the site. The "Barge of the Dead" review will be posted by Friday evening. Within a couple more days I should be back on a more normal schedule for subsequent episodes, whose reviews should be posted before the following week's new show.
  • October 3, 1999: Delayed review — My contact will not be able to mail me the tape of "Survival Instinct" until tomorrow. I probably won't receive it until Wednesday or Thursday, and the review itself probably won't be posted until late in the week, perhaps even the weekend.
  • September 30, 1999: Posted the review for VOY's season premiere, "Equinox, Part II."
  • September 20, 1999:

Central Illinois, where I live, is in the middle of a weird UPN transition. You see, up until a few weeks ago, we didn't have a UPN affiliate in the area at all. Voyager was instead aired late Saturday nights on an ABC affiliate that carried a few UPN shows in a limited syndication deal. However, a new station in the area has become a UPN affiliate. As a result, our ABC affiliate no longer carries Voyager, effective a few weeks ago.

What's throwing everything off is the fact that the new UPN affiliate (1) apparently hasn't started broadcasting yet, (2) will not be immediately carried by my local cable company when it does start broadcasting, and (3) is too weak a station for me to pick up via antenna. In fact, I can't tell you when I'll be able to actually see Voyager in my area again—it could be a few weeks or even a few months. My cable company could not give me a time estimate, although they said we would be getting UPN eventually.

As a result, I have arranged to have videotaped Voyager episodes sent to me every week through the mail by online correspondents. Depending on when during the week I receive these tapes (between three and seven days of the airing of the episode, I'd imagine), reviews might be posted slightly late, relative to previous seasons.

Obviously, this also means I will not be able to discuss the shows immediately after many of you have seen them. If you're sending e-mail talking about the shows, please include spoiler warnings if I haven't yet posted the review. Thanks.

  • September 19, 1999: ALL CLEAR: My e-mail is back. You may resume sending mail to [email protected]. Also, main-page accesses have surpassed the 300,000 mark!
  • September 17, 1999: URGENT ADMIN NOTICE: Due to extreme ISP problems, I will not be able to receive any mail at [email protected] for the next 2-4 days. Nor will I receive mail sent to [email protected], since that address simply forwards to [email protected]. I am not sure if any mail sent to epsico.com during this outage will be eventually delivered, but my guess is that it WILL NOT, and instead will simply bounce. Until I give the all-clear, please send e-mail to [email protected]. This outage does not affect anything at this website, which is hosted independently of my e-mail.
  • September 14, 1999: The VOY season 6 page has been added (of course, there's nothing on it yet). Site map indexes have been updated.
  • September 13, 1999: And here it is finally: my last-ever posting for Deep Space Nine, the DS9 Season Seven Recap. This officially marks the end of my 1998-99 reviewing year. I'll see you surprisingly soon for the launch of Voyager's sixth season, which is in a little more than a week.
  • September 4, 1999: Obligatory check-in — The work on the DS9 season recap is well under way. It's been a slow, steady, extremely leisurely process the past few weeks (I simply haven't felt the need or motivation to tackle it with single-minded obsession), but it's coming along. I expect to have it done and posted sometime during the week of Labor Day (September 6).
  • August 28, 1999: Lest people think the still-incomplete text-only archive would never be updated, I have added two seasons of old reviews. More will hopefully be added between the time I post my DS9 season recap and the time VOY's new season starts up.
  • August 22, 1999: Wow, I don't think I've ever been this late with a season recap article. Rest assured: The DS9 season seven recap will be posted. When, I'm not certain. I've barely started writing the thing, believe it or not, because I've been swamped this summer with work, play, and general non-reviewing activities. You can be guaranteed it will be posted before Voyager's sixth season starts on September 22, but I'm not sure if I'll have it done before the end of August. I haven't felt motivated to sit down and get cracking, and I'm not sure why. I'll get to it soon, though. On the other hand, I have finally updated the information on my personal pages, which was about six months out of date. Visit them to find out what I'm up to IRL these days. (Site now also includes the all-new Jammer Car Files.)
  • August 10, 1999: I've written an article for Trek Nation, containing some of my thoughts about the future of the franchise. Take a look.
  • August 2, 1999: My in-depth Fifth Season Recap article for VOY has been posted.
  • July 17, 1999: I've modified the color scheme for the hyperlinks, toning down the "brightness factor" and making them somewhat more subtle. The modifications make use of cascading style sheets, a handier, more updated tool in Web design. By the way, don't expect the season recap articles for quite some time, perhaps even until well into August (although not necessarily). I've been chipping away at the task slowly and admittedly not very steadily. One of the articles is under way but a long way from being finished, and the other one isn't even started.
  • July 7, 1999: The review for VOY's season finale, "Equinox," is finally posted.
  • July 5, 1999: Counter reaches the 275,000 mark.
  • July 2, 1999: Just for fun—I'm in a graphics mood, not a writing mood—we now have a new main logo. Basically the same, only better.
  • July 1, 1999: The agreement with my hosting service is under way; the new banner ads are now operating.
  • June 28, 1999: Goodbye, DS9—my final episode review for the best of the Trek series has at last been posted. Here is my extremely lengthy reaction to the sendoff show, "What You Leave Behind."
  • June 25, 1999:

Yes, Star Trek: Hypertext has moved yet AGAIN; this time we have our own domain name, http://www.st-hypertext.com. Pretty neat that this site finally has its own registered domain, but why do we keep moving around?, you might be asking.

As with the last move a mere three months ago, it wasn't really my intention to change URLs again. Here's the story: Since late March, my site has been a sub-site hosted by the TrekZone Network, which included TrekSeek and TrekToday. The network was run by two parties in a partnership. TrekToday was owned by one party, Christian Sparborth, while TrekSeek was owned by the other. The two worked together to comprise Trekzone.

About a week ago, Christian informed me the partnership was ending and new plans were in store: TrekToday would become its own entity, opening its own parent site, called TrekNation. Physically, my site was hosted on the server with TrekSeek. However, virtually all of my server administration and correspondence lay with Christian, who would no longer have any contact or administrative duties with TrekSeek.

So, Christian invited me along as a member of his new Trek Nation network, and offered me a free domain registration. I was happy to take the offer, although this means you will have to update your links and bookmarks again. Sorry.

As I said a few months ago, I hope I don't have to move this site again, but I might also add that permanence on the Web is hard to come by unless you have money to spend or relationships with Internet host providers that promise never to change. That certainly hasn't been the case for me. Things change, websites move. So it goes. Welcome to our new location.

I now also have an additional e-mail address, [email protected], but my other e-mail address, [email protected] is not going away. In fact, one points to the other, so they're the same for all purposes, practical or otherwise. :)

  • June 20, 1999: An update on the status of overdue reviews: I won't bother with excuses anymore. Suffice it to say I haven't had the time I thought I would this past week to finish out the season, and it has truly been frustrating. I won't bother making any more "promises" on the release date of the reviews, since I've been unable to meet my deadline for the last two weeks. I would again guess it would be sometime this week, but I don't want to continue to look like an idiot by proposing deadlines I can't meet. Sorry once again, please bear with me, and stay tuned. Thanks.
  • June 12, 1999:

Apologies once again for the lateness of my reviews. If you want full-fledged excuses from the files of my personal life, here they are: I just changed jobs, and I just moved. And, no, I'm still not completely unpacked.

Granted, I only moved a few miles, and I changed jobs within the same building, but moving furniture and everything else one owns takes time away from other things. And my bizarre change in hours (flipping back and forth between days and nights) has temporarily rendered futile any realistic hope for conventional order.

Bottom line—the reviews for the DS9 series finale and the VOY season finale are still not written, and I don't expect them to be until sometime next week. It could be as early as Tuesday or as late as Friday before both are done.

  • May 20, 1999: The review for another rich DS9 installment, "Tacking into the Wind," is posted.
  • May 17, 1999: Posted reviews for DS9's "When it Rains..." and VOY's "11:59." Sorry, again, that these were late. I'm hoping reviews from last week's shows will be up in a more timely manner.
  • May 13, 1999: (2:00 a.m. CDT) I'm still trying to catch up with the reviewing mayhem of the last couple weeks. Unfortunately, other real-life constraints have been gobbling up my free time and have thrown my reviewing schedule off. You may have noticed I still haven't posted reviews for DS9's "When it Rains..." or VOY's "11:59." Both reviews are in the works. Hopefully I will have one or both finished before I leave town this evening for a one-day trip. If not, it might be Saturday or Sunday before those reviews are posted, which might not bode well for the timeliness of the reviews following that, either. Bear with me...
  • May 8, 1999: Posted reviews for VOY's "Juggernaut" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." My apologies for these reviews having been delayed. Also, counter surpasses 225,000 hits.
  • April 30, 1999: Posted review for DS9's awesome "The Changing Face of Evil."
  • April 28, 1999: Posted review for DS9's "Strange Bedfellows."
  • April 19, 1999: Posted review for DS9's "'Til Death Do Us Part." Also, the Trek BBS, a Web-based discussion group where I moderate the DS9 forum, is now open. If you want to talk about the series, stop on by. However, I will still not discuss spoilers for upcoming shows (although you can find them on the BBS), nor will I read spoiler posts. I'm going to try to remain spoiler-free for the next eight weeks.

  • April 6, 1999: Updated the links page and awards page [removed]. Reviews of new episodes will follow soon, according to my best estimates ... for what those estimates are worth. :)
  • April 5, 1999: NETWORK NEWS — Yes, that's right, I have a (gasp!) BANNER shown on my page—the first ever. The nice people here at Trekseek.com have fixed me up with some scripting that provides links to the sites here on the Trekzone/Trekseek/Trektoday network. I didn't know about them before joining the Trekzone Network (possibly because the network is new), but it's good stuff. The banner exchange is part of the hosting agreement I have here at Trekseek. Warp Eleven is another site hosted here on the Trekzone Network; it's a news site, so beware those spoilers—I know I have to!
  • March 31, 1999: Posted review for VOY's "The Fight."
  • March 26, 1999: 200,000 HITS since March 1, 1999!
  • March 23, 1999:

Welcome to our new location at http://st-hypertext.trekseek.com/, part of the Trekzone network. Perhaps explanations are in order...

Okay, so here we go again. Just a little less than one year after moving to Epsico.com, I've been forced to make another move. Believe me, folks, I didn't want to move. It's a hassle for me to have to update search engine entries and I'm sure it's a pain for people who maintain correct links to this site as well. I apologize to those who maintain links (especially moderators of sites like Psi Phi, who maintain many individual links), and I thank you in advance for updating them at your convenience.

The reason I moved is simple. All Information Systems, the Web-hosting company that hosts Epsico.com, wanted to charge me what I consider a ridiculous amount of money to keep my site there based on its volume of traffic. Subsequently, the people here at Trekzone made me a site-hosting offer I couldn't refuse. Here's hoping this is the last move I'll need to make for a very long time.

Please note that nothing on the site has changed, and for simplicity's sake, I'm retaining my e-mail address, [email protected]. Trekzone is hosting this site, but this site is still completely independent in content and opinion.

  • March 17, 1999: Advance warning: There's a very, very good chance that this site will be moving in a matter of days. Apparently, this site has become increasingly popular over the past few months, and the download bandwidth is far exceeding the current agreement I have with my Web provider. They want to charge me a large sum of money to upgrade my account—money that, frankly, I could put to much better use. I'm currently in the process of setting up an account elsewhere that offers more flexible bandwidth options for a more feasible price. When the deal is set, this site will move—again, alas. Stay tuned.

  • January 31, 1999:
Star Trek: Hypertext unveils its new design!

Some words on the redesign: I hope you enjoy the new look — I personally like it much better! A redesign for this site was something that I've long been meaning to do, and a few weeks ago it just happened — I sat down after work and started playing around with graphics and hammering out the way I wanted it to look, and before I knew it, I was past the Point of No Return. I had put in too many hours over too many days to turn back or continue to put it off for the future. I wanted it finished and posted, and it quickly became an unstoppable freight train: I would have it unveiled as soon as my schedule would allow. It took a few weeks of tedious, multiple-hour shifts to get everything fine-tuned. But here it is!

I aimed for something that melded old and new — improved visual design and somewhat simplified navigation while maintaining the same overall feel of the old site. In other words, although the site has received a facelift, it's more the same than it is different. There was a lot I liked about the old site. And, of course, there was plenty I didn't like. The stuff I didn't like has been removed or replaced with stuff that works. The organization was something that worked and has not been changed. Except for the Star Trek: First Contact review, not a single page has changed URL. (Almost all graphical-image files, however, have been shuffled around, so in the unlikely event that you, for whatever reason, maintain links to images on this site, you will have to update them.)

The main-menu page has received the most attention. It used to involve too much vertical scrolling and too much empty space. Both problems have been corrected. The center of the page now contains all the information, organized in more visually logical and compacted menus. I also changed the background, which has long annoyed me. The old background was subtle on most PCs (and subtle was the original intent), but on most Macs and some other graphics platforms it looked awful. In any case it was mostly just dumb-looking. Now it's gone forever, replaced with the more simple and practical sidebar. I've always been a fan of the sidebar — whether it serves a functional purpose or not. Here it serves no specific functional purpose, but rather just an aesthetic one. Also, the main menu now makes use of image maps, perhaps the most advanced feature on the site. Not to worry: The textual site map navigator is still available at the bottom of the menu pages for those who experience problems with the image maps.

I have also added the (not yet complete) text-only archive. In keeping with my philosophy that this site should be compatible with virtually any Web-browsing platform, the text-only review archive is for those of you who (heavens forbid) don't like graphics on the Web. It's rudimentary (the graphical version is of course the primary focus of the site), but it should facilitate printing for those of you who prefer to print out the reviews rather than read them on the screen. It might be awhile before I get everything in there in text format. Right now it's a work in progress.

I have revised and rewritten parts of the overview page, as well as made some minor revisions and additions to the FAQ page, but other than the aforementioned and some general cleanup and minor tweaking, most everything else is the same. Please note that redesign efforts have not turned me into an Evil Web Designer. I still refuse to use frames (they simply aren't necessary or practical here), and I still don't employ animated GIFs, sounds, or pointless scripting. Keeping it Simple is still my intent here, so I hope you find this site simpler and more appealing at the same time!

  • Also on January 31, 1999: Finally, some long-delayed new articles! Posted reviews for DS9's "It's Only a Paper Moon" and "Prodigal Daughter" and VOY's "Latent Image." Expect the Insurrection review in the coming week, along with VOY's "Bride of Chaotica!"
  • January 29, 1999: Counter surpasses 160,000 hits.
  • January 26, 1999: I'm not dead, missing, bailing on reviewing Trek, or otherwise. And I'm catching up—I promise. New reviews WILL BE posted THIS WEEK. Maybe not all of them (I'm four behind right now if you count Insurrection), but two, perhaps three, will be posted for sure. Keep an eye out for them ... and also keep an eye out for a little surprise I've been working on...
  • January 11, 1999: Counter surpasses 150,000 hits.
  • January 7, 1999:

TOS's third-season reviews are finally posted. That's right—the whole season. (I was beginning to think I'd NEVER get these finished.) Now I can turn my attention back to new DS9 shows and (I PROMISE) Star Trek: Insurrection.

By the way, Happy New Year. And a shout-out to everyone in the Midwest (USA) who enjoyed Blizzard '99, particularly those in the Chicago area. I had the good fortune of being in Chicago precisely when the 20 inches of snow fell, making this past weekend a most interesting one indeed. If I learned anything, it's that you should buy a snow shovel to remove vehicles from underneath multiple-foot-deep snow drifts before the storm hits, as they sell out quickly once the snow stops and vehicular-removal mania sets in. Being an Illinois native, I should've known this by now, but a reminder of personal stupidity from Mother Nature never hurts. But hey, I still managed to see DS9, so no harm done, right? (The review for "It's Only a Paper Moon" will be posted soon.)

Please note that with the new year comes the fact that in my area I will not be able to watch DS9 until the Sunday after the official "air week," meaning reviews will typically not be posted for 10 or more days after the earlier airings. So it goes, but this probably isn't a big change considering that I've been consistently five or more days later than my target posting dates since the season began, anyway. :)

1998

  • December 26, 1998: At last! Posted reviews of VOY's "Thirty Days" and "Counterpoint." A substantial TOS update and the Insurrection review are in the works. Look for them around New Year's.
  • December 20, 1998: Jammer graduates from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (B.A., English). With some time now on my hands, delayed reviews will be written in the coming week.
  • December 14, 1998:

DELAYS — Well, what can I say? It's finals week. The last finals week of my college career. I've been busy, busy, busy with other things. As a result, reviews for the past week have been placed on the back burner. But I will write them as soon as I can. VOY's "Thirty Days" will get top priority (simply because I'd prefer not to fall two VOY episodes behind), followed by a significant catch-up on TOS season three capsules (many of which are already written but not yet posted), and finally the review of Star Trek: Insurrection.

At this point I'd like to think that most of these reviews will be done in the next week or so, but the Insurrection review in particular might get the most delayed (I plan to see the film a second time before writing it up). Factoring in pre-Christmas craziness might also cause some delays. As such, I'm not naming specific dates for being completely caught up; just be assured that I'm working on them. Thanks for your patience!

  • December 8, 1998: Posted review for VOY's "Nothing Human."
  • December 2, 1998: Posted review for VOY's "Infinite Regress." Also, counter surpasses 130,000 hits.
  • November 30, 1998: Posted review of DS9's "Covenant"—the last DS9 review I'll write as a college student.
  • November 25, 1998: Posted reviews for DS9's "The Siege of AR-558" and VOY's "Timeless."
  • November 21, 1998: Posted TOS capsule reviews second season's "Return to Tomorrow" through "Assignment: Earth"
  • November 17, 1998: Posted review for DS9's "Once More Unto the Breach."
  • November 16, 1998: Counter surpasses 120,000 hits.
  • November 14, 1998: Posted review for VOY's "Once Upon a Time."
  • November 11, 1998: Posted reviews for DS9's "Treachery, Faith, and the Great River" and VOY's "In the Flesh" and a second season TOS update covering "The Trouble With Tribbles" through "A Private Little War."
  • November 5, 1998: Posted reviews for DS9's "Chrysalis" and VOY's "Extreme Risk."
  • October 31, 1998: I promised a TOS update and here it is. I've posted TOS capsule reviews for second season's "Amok Time" through "Wolf in the Fold."
  • October 29, 1998: Finally—posted the review for VOY's excellent "Drone." I promise that a TOS update will follow ASAP.
  • October 24, 1998: At last, some catching-up success! DS9 reviews for "Afterimage" and "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" are now posted. A substantial TOS update will follow soon. Unfortunately, this week it's Voyager that gets the delay. My local station pre-empted "Drone" with the World Series, which I fully expected, but they again decided not to make up the show, which, conversely, is lame. I will be receiving a tape of the show tomorrow, with a review to follow in the days after that.
  • October 20, 1998: Posted review for VOY's season premiere, "Night." I have finally seen DS9's "Afterimage," so the review will be following in a few days, as soon as I can work it into my schedule. By this weekend, I should hopefully be back on my usual reviewing schedule.
  • October 19, 1998: The review for VOY's "Night" will be posted soon. However, the review for DS9's "Afterimage" will unfortunately be delayed awhile longer. My local station pre-empted DS9 last week with baseball playoffs (understandable), but for some reason they decided not to air the show at all (not understandable). Hopefully, I can get ahold of a copy of the episode in the next few days, and hopefully this won't push back my other reviews as a result.
  • October 13, 1998: 100,000 HITS since March 1, 1997! Many thanks to all for visiting and coming back on a regular basis! Also, added TOS capsules for "Court Martial" through "Operation—Annihilate!"
  • October 10, 1998: Posted review for DS9's "Shadows and Symbols."
  • October 2, 1998: Posted review for DS9's season premiere, "Image in the Sand."
  • September 28, 1998: Added TOS capsules for "Shore Leave" through "Tomorrow Is Yesterday."
  • September 24, 1998: Added TOS capsules for "The Corbomite Maneuver" through "Balance of Terror."
  • September 17, 1998:

It would seem that my vacation from updating this website is officially very over.

As such, it looks like it's time to reveal some big news concerning a significant addition to this site. I have, after some consideration, decided to review in capsule format The Original Series as the episodes are rebroadcast in order on the Sci-Fi Channel. (The lesson of the week is "never say never.") For more information about how I will be doing this, please see the introduction to the new TOS episode guide.

Since I was making updates, I also have taken the opportunity to add the index pages for the upcoming seasons of DS9 and Voyager, and I have updated the site maps (including a slight change in their format) accordingly.

Lastly, as a symbolic gesture, I have changed all airdates on the season listing pages to a four-digit format. With the year 2000 less than 16 months away, it's becoming increasingly clear to me that there very well could be serious consequences to the Y2K computer problem if we don't all get our collective acts together and fix this problem as best possible before the very dead deadline approaches.

  • August 5, 1998: Counter surpasses 90,000 hits.

  • August 4, 1998: At last ... the Sixth Season Recap for DS9 has been posted!
  • July 31, 1998: Sixth-season recap update: I won't be making the "self-imposed July 31 deadline." But I won't be missing it by too far, either. I just need to find a few solid hours (a more difficult task than it seems) to finish up my commentary. To give myself some leeway, I'm now announcing that the recap will be posted no later than August 5, and hopefully earlier. I promise.
  • July 26, 1998: Sixth-season recap update: I'm happy to report progress. It's not done yet, but it's well under way. Will I make my self-imposed July 31 deadline? Maybe. We shall see shortly...
  • July 17, 1998: Okay, so where's the DS9 season six recap that I promised for "mid-July"? In two words, "not done." In two more words, "not started." I have been busier this summer than I ever could've imagined when this summer started. That means DELAYS. Hopefully the delay won't be too long; I'm still going to shoot for the end of July for the DS9 recap, so stay tuned.

  • March 29, 1998: Counter surpasses 60,000 hits.
  • March 22-29, 1998: In preparation for the big move on March 30, I've done a minor revamp of the entire site. I believe in the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," so most of the changes are barely noticeable. However, I've made an effort to update and clean up some of the little details in order to make the entire site consistent, particularly with the review page formats, hyperlinks, and copyright information. Every page has been changed in some minor way, even if it was simply to update the e-mail address.
  • March 8, 1998: Posted reviews for DS9's "Change of Heart" and VOY's "The Killing Game."
  • February 27, 1998: Posted reviews for DS9's "Honor Among Thieves" and VOY's "Retrospect."
  • February 25, 1998: Posted the review for VOY's standout offering, "Prey." Also, my own arrogance has led me to make a banner for Star Trek: Hypertext. If you're interested in using it as a link (read: advertisement), you can find it on my Links page.
  • February 20, 1998: Posted review for DS9's "One Little Ship."
  • February 14, 1998: Posted review for VOY's "Hunters."

  • February 11, 1998: Star Trek: Hypertext gets its 50,000th hit since March of last year.
  • February 10, 1998: I've done some minor site restructuring. One directory and a number of files have been renamed.
  • February 7, 1998: The Review Mailer garners its 500th current subscriber. Also posted review for DS9's "Who Mourns for Morn?"
  • January 23, 1998: Posted review for VOY's "Message in a Bottle."
  • January 17, 1998: Posted review for VOY's "Waking Moments."
  • January 12, 1998: I posted a review for the DS9 novel Wrath of the Prophets for all you readers out there. :) Also, on my season listing pages, I've changed the links that refer to the press release/general info pages. Instead of Vidiot's site, they now go to Psi Phi's site. I've found Psi Phi's information much more comprehensive and interesting overall.
  • January 11, 1998: Review for DS9's powerhouse "Waltz" posted — the first on-time post in over a month!
  • January 6, 1998: Posted review for DS9's "The Magnificent Ferengi."

  • December 19, 1997: I put some nifty graphical font headings at the top of the main pages. Also, you know I must be bored when I start experimenting with the website's main logo. :)
  • December 13, 1997: Cleaned some of the rough edges on various images.
  • December 9, 1997: Counter surpasses 40,000 hits!
  • December 8, 1997: I have posted my rather lengthy article about the Trek franchise: "Four Series and the Trek Ideology."
  • November 30, 1997: Reviews for DS9's "Statistical Probabilities" and VOY's "Concerning Flight" are now posted.
  • November 28, 1997: The review for VOY's "Random Thoughts" is finally posted.
  • November 26, 1997: Apologies for my tardiness in reviewing VOY's "Random Thoughts." November is a really bad month for me to keep up with everything (excuses, excuses). Hopefully I can get it done tonight, but it may be until tomorrow.

  • October 22, 1997: Updated the Review Mailer page, which now uses an input form for subscribers.
  • October 18, 1997: I have an extremely hellish week of nonstop work ahead of me, so I'm sorry to report that I'm going to have to postpone my review for DS9's "Sons and Daughters" for the time being. I will write it, but it may be the 24th before I can get to it. This may also push back the following week's review of "Behind the Lines" by a few days. I apologize for the delays, but they're necessary. Look on the bright side: If it weren't for two weeks of Voyager reruns, I'd really be in trouble.
  • October 13, 1997: To address possible viewing problems, I have darkened the ST: Hypertext background image. I've received a few comments that the old background made the text difficult to read in some cases. This change should help. If this affects you for the better, I'd be interested in hearing from you so I can get an idea of how many people experienced a problem. Thanks. Also posted review for VOY's "The Raven."
  • October 11, 1997: Posted review for DS9's "Rocks and Shoals."
  • October 3, 1997: Posted review for VOY's "Revulsion."
  • October 1, 1997: Posted review for DS9's excellent season premiere, "A Time to Stand."
  • September 29, 1997: I have moved my "links to other Trek sites" off the main page and onto its own page, and I've updated all other links accordingly. I have also removed the star ratings info links from the bottom of the various pages, because it isn't accessed nearly enough to necessitate such pervasive linkage. Also, I've finally phased out the starfield background on the various index pages, which has been bugging me for a while now.
  • September 28, 1997: Posted review of VOY's "Nemesis."
  • September 23, 1997: Posted review of VOY's "Day of Honor."
  • September 18, 1997: I have done some editing of the copyright & disclaimer page. I also condensed the copyright info on all the other main pages, because, really, it was taking up more than its fair share of space.
  • September 17, 1997: 20,000 hits since the counter was installed! Thanks, everybody, for visiting!
  • September 13, 1997: Posted review of VOY's "The Gift."
  • September 7, 1997: Posted review of VOY's season premiere, "Scorpion, Part II."
  • September 5, 1997: After months of slowly chipping away at the task day by day—going back, watching old episodes and writing brief reviews—I finally added DS9's second season review. This includes the second season index and summaries, the reviews, season comment, and season ranking. Whew. Also added DS9 season 6 and VOY season 4 menus. Updated all indexes to allow access to new pages.
  • (No notes prior to September 5, 1997. I wish I'd started a historical record of this site long before I did, but I figure better late than never.)

Jammer's Reviews went online March 27, 1995.
