Re: TNG S4: The Host

Crusher seems fine with the idea of Odan having a new body until she sees it is going to be female. It's interesting that this is where the line is crossed for her. I wonder if he had come back as a hideously ugly man would she be similarly uninterested? And would we think less of her if she were?

Re: TNG S4: Half a Life

I must admit when Troi's voiceover said "My mother is on board", I was tempted to hit the off switch immediately, but I'm glad I stuck this one out. It raised some interesting questions about ageing and care for the elderly and I liked the sombre way the actor who played Timicin played it. Lwaxana was annoying as ever but at least she was annoying in a good episode for once.

Re: TNG S4: Galaxy's Child

Think I have to side with the "Geordi is a creep" brigade here. Brahms even gave him multiple opportunities to come clean about how he knew so much about her and he didn't take them - if his holodeck simulation was really so innocent he coudl have been open and he wouldn't have panicked when he found out Brahms was accessing it.

Re: TNG S3: Sarek

I liked this one, but not too sure why Picard wasn't just sedated while he had to host Sarek's emotions. Was it integral that he stay conscious in such turmoil?

Re: TNG S3: The Ensigns of Command

What I liked about this one is that there's a subplot about O'Hara, La Forge and Wesley trying to get the transporters to pick up the colonists. Now a lot of Star Trek episodes would have them succeed and thereby save the day in an all too convenient way. Here they fail miserably and it's up to Picard's igenuity to get the job done.

Re: VOY S7: Author, Author

Nick, The Thaw and Timeless are also two of my favourites (not keen on Emanations and I thought The Chute was OK, but nothing special), but I don't think it was because they focused on Harry that they were good. In fact, Timeless benefited from having a very different version of Harry in it.

Re: VOY S7: Homestead

I really liked this one actually. I was very surprised Neelix actually left in the end - I was sure he'd change his mind last minute. It wasn't til the credits came up that I actually accepted he was gone. Loved the final scene between him and Tuvok - I've always liked episodes that focused on their relationship (which I guess puts me in the minority here). Though I agree Naomi should have got a goodbye too.

Re: VOY S7: Author, Author

I liked this one too, maybe not quite worth 4 stars as it was a bit obvious and heavyhanded in places (did the Doc really expect the crew not to take offence at their fictional equivilants? Even he has more tact than that), but still funny and interesting.

I've been really impressed by Season 7 as a whole: the plots have shown more respect for previous episodes, the Paris/Torres relationship has finally started going places, Seven's role has been downplayed a bit, Harry is now treated as the joke he is rather than trying to amke us care about him, and Tuvok and Chaokotay have actually started doing stuff. Just a pity it's all going to end in 6 episodes just as it's finding its feet.

Re: VOY S6: Fury

I think the Kazon were mishandled, but in concept they were a good idea. They were forced to eke out an existence in an area of space that had few natural resources then suddenly this starship appears on the scene that can replicate whatever it wants any time it wants. You can see where they were coming from when they were angry that Janeway would not share her technology with them.

Re: VOY S7: The Void

I liked this episode, but I thought one scene was badly handled: Janeway lookking at the Federation rules for a loophole that would allow her to conduct raiding. When she can't find one she decides she must still follow the rules depite calling them impractical. So essentially what that scene is saying is Janeway must blindly follow rules she doesn't really agree with when she'd much rather do a spot of raiding. Bizarre.

Re: VOY S7: Prophecy

"Tuvok looked positively angry at his trashed quarters. Obviously they're intending that one of these days he'll lose control of his emotions and snap.. this would be potentially damaging to his character so I hope when it's done, it's done well."

At this point, I'm hoping the final episode focuses on a buck-naked Tuvok chasing Neelix artound the lower decks with a chainsaw.

Back on topic, I liked this episode - I thought it was fun. But I think I'm possibly part of that demographic Jammer's always complaining that Voyager pandered to.

Re: VOY S7: Lineage

I wasn't too interested in this. I liked the whole genetic restructuring concept and it's very relevant today, with people wanting "perfect" children. But I just didn't care that much about Torres' problems and I couldn't bring myself to feel much sympathy for her, especially when she went behind Tom's back and reprogrammed the Doctor. I also thought the flashbacks lacked any real dramatic punch.

And, call me a moron if you will, but I could have done with an action insert and a B-Plot about Neelix pinching Tuvok's socks.

Re: VOY S7: Shattered

I liked this one too, it was fun seeing all the references to half-forgotten episodes (I never expected to see Chaotica again). Plus I generally find Chakotay an entertaining central character, he's convincing in action roles and Beltran has an easy-going charisma I like. Also adult Naomi Wildman was pretty easy on the eye.

One problem I had was Seven's depiction. She seemed far too helpful for the Seven of Scorpion Part II.

Re: VOY S7: Flesh and Blood

"How can I punish you for being who you are?" This line probably seemed profound to whoever wrote it, but it's just nonsense. If a guy murders someone because it's "who he is", should he escape punishment? Unless Janeway means Doc cannot be judged like a full person can be, which seems to go against the whole point of the episode.

Still, apart from the Doctor escaping all punishment and Iden's turning into a nutjob just so we can have a proper bad guy, I thought this was a pretty solid episode with quite a few interesting points raised.

Re: VOY S7: Unimatrix Zero, Part II

Torres speaking with that vocal thing sounded like Janeway normally. Maybe Kate Mulgrew has been a Borg sleeper-agent all along.

The Borg just don't interest me all that much I have to say (maybe because I've never really watched TNG and so missed them actually being scary). I always hate whenever the crew transport to a Borg ship and just casually dander past all these drones doing nothing - just makes them seem dopey and not a threat in any way. Where did the Borg come from anyway? I assume they must have been man-made (or alien-made). Were they an experiment that went out of control?

The Borg Queen telling the kid about the joys of being in the collective was actually a very good scene to my mind. Yes, I agree she doesn't make much sense, but I think the writers do well with what they've got.

If anything Harry should be demoted for never, ever, ever, ever, ever getting a lock. Why does he even bother turning up for duty?

Paris is the 4th highest ranking character? What about Lt. Chapman from Someone to Watch Over Me? When will he get his time to shine? ;)

Am I the only one who finds Chakotay to be a far better captain than Janeway? He's not a nutcase and seems far more approachable and doesn't act like a passive-aggressive mother hen to the crew.

Re: VOY S6: Unimatrix Zero, Part I

I love the way none of the crew even take notice of Harry's "I didn't see a little box on my chair." The idea is clearly so ridiculous there's no point even discussing it - Harry has essentially become a parody of himself. I also like the way he's referred to as Young Harry by the folk in Fair Haven and by the aliens in Muse yet he's clearly at least 30 by now.

Anyway, I though this episode was ok, but I'm so sick of the bloody Borg.

Re: VOY S6: Fury

If the writers had come up with a better last ten minutes (a more credible reason for old Kes being evil and a better solution than the 180) I think this would have been a great episode. As it was, I feel it was a good self-contained episode, but poor in the context of the show.

Good seeing Kes back again - probably my favourite character after the Doc. Wish they hadn't got rid of her. I also kinda miss the Vidiians and the Kazon. Recent villains have been pretty uninteresting (8472, The Hirogen, The Borg over and over and over again, whatever those smelly guys who pollute everywhere were called).

Re: VOY S6: Muse

Meh, this episode had its moments (the Chaokotay/Janeway scene for instance) and the rehearsal scenes were good. I've done a bit of acting and I empathise with the guy who thought playing Tuvok would make him look like a bad actor. But as a whole, I just wasn't that interested in it. Maybe if it had focused on another character than Torres - I must admit I just can't warm to her even though I think Dawson's one of the better Voyager actors.

Then again I loved Tsunkatse, so what do I know?

Re: VOY S6: Live Fast and Prosper

Funny how the Doc can be altered to look like fake Janeway when in another episode he didn't know how to give himself hair.

Decent enough episode. Could have been funnier, but for what it was, it worked. The fake Tuvok was quite funny in my mind.

Re: VOY S6: Good Shepherd

I didn't really get Janeway having a go at Harren for "murdering" the lifeform. Surely if it had accessed the environmental controls it would have killed them all instantly (regardless as to whether that was its intent)?

Re: VOY S6: One Small Step

Chakotay seemed really out of character in this one. In fact, with his disobeying orders and living out childhood obsessions he seemed to be acting far more like Paris. Which makes me think this was going to be a Paris episode and was re-written as a Chakotay vehicle because they hadn't had one in a while.

I also didn't like how Seven was reprimanded by the others as being inhuman for having no interest in history. There's plenty of people who couldn't give a rat's ass about history. I guess such behaviour just doesn't fit with the Starfleet mould where everyone seems to have heroes from the past for some reason.
