Re: VOY S7: Shattered

I'm in the camp that likes this episode as well. Just a fun, entertaining way to use time travel and anomalies to contrast the early seasons with the later ones. I mean that's part of the reason TNG's All Good Things was such a strong episode as well.

Really surprised at the negative reaction.. I liked this one a lot. Just a cool time travel plot with an nice character cameo, I found it fun.

Re: Star Trek: The Motion Picture

As much as I like the visuals and exploration feeling in this movie, I find parts of the writing really strange. Like how a woman gets vaporized/replaced and there's hardly any emotional reaction to it, as well as the earlier transporter accident which also has a lack of reaction. Weirds me out, man.

Re: TNG S5: Silicon Avatar

Yeah you can't really say what the writers were thinking unless you're in their head. We do know that making contact with potentially hostile species has been an objective of the show since the very first episode.

Re: TNG S5: Silicon Avatar

Q was judging to see if we could expand our minds. He doesn't care about 18 crew members lost at first contact with the borg, he probably doesn't care that the CE killing before making first contact. "If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed."

@CPUFP

I think he's playing annoyance and surprise at Picard's new girlfriend. Seemed fine to me...

Re: TNG S5: Silicon Avatar

You forgot option 3.

3. It is sentient, mass murderer that they had an opportunity to stop peacefully and in the process make first contact with an alien species.

Are you also forgetting that Q is judging humanity? He charges humanity with being a dangerous, savage child-race and your approach doesn't exactly win the gold star for contradicting him.

Destroying it isn't the worst outcome but it is a wasteful one when the episode shows that it was not necessary in the moment.

Re: TNG S5: Silicon Avatar

But it hadn't been asked to stop killing or provided a subsitute energy source in previous episodes.

CE might have had that ability and now they'll never find out. Good luck if they ever run into the same species again.

Re: TNG S5: Silicon Avatar

"No... it demonstrates that an awful lot of people have faulty thinking. The fact is that this "creature" goes around killing and wiping out. A shark does the same. If the shark is on your beach, you kill it. After trying to communicate with this "creature" and all the while it is destroying... you have no option. That's how the world operates. Anything else is a nonsense. "

Except that they hadn't tried communcation with CE before. Then the lady blows it up when apparently they were on the verge of being able to do so with the CE. So the shark comparison doesn't really hold up.

That said I'm not a fan of the closing of this episode being so negative toward the lady that did it. I'd rather have the ending focused on Riker's reaction since his girlfriend blew up at the beginning.

"Then how will you know... how much I enjoy being with you?"

What a great and memorable bromance episode. That scene made me tear up a little bit in a manly way. Tim Russ was really awesome in this one.

Re: TNG S7: Sub Rosa

I see where Dave in NC is coming from although I wouldn't go so far as to say I liked this episode. I see what they were going for and the fog on the enterprise was kind of fun. "It just rolled in, Captain."

My main problem with it is that it falls into the category of a female character having some evil dude dating them, which happens a lot.

I really don't think season 7 is a bad as some say it is, but I'd rank this one slightly below The Royale.

Re: TNG S7: Inheritance

I'd give this one a full star rating. One of the best season 7 eps and certainly a very good Data episode. Explores a lot of character stuff with some big moral questions in there too. And the actress was really good, and she still is (recently having seen her in Lost).

Re: TNG S7: Firstborn

This is a pretty cool episode overall, not a bad way to wrap up the character, at least on the TNG side of him. I thought it was a pretty touching story.

@Rosario
"I won't say much about the time travel since I've said more than enough on it elsewhere. Star Trek has just never accepted the central truth that the very act of arriving in the past from the future contaminates the timeline. Star Trek thinks you must actively interfere in order to contaminate. Incorrect."

You sound pretty certain about the mechanics of something that is entirely fictional. Might as well be debating the central truth of the speed of Superman.

Re: TNG S7: Genesis

This episode is hilarious, suspenseful, and awesome. Love it. Guilty pleasure for sure. I'm cool with having bad writing in a few episode if it means we get fun stuff with the TNG cast such as episodes like Genesis and Masks. There are 7 seasons of serious episodes, a few fun ones is a nice change.

Re: TNG S7: Dark Page

Smith wrote:

"Gene Roddenberry was very specific in that he didn't like mourning episodes (24th century officers are beyond that, plus the concept is simple and boring). This is why he did not like Ron Moore's “dead mother who comes back” episode...and who the other producers weaseled into the lineup regardless."

I have to ask why does that matter? Gene Roddenberry apparently didn't even want Patrick Stewart, arguably the best thing about TNG, to be playing Picard. Going against Gene Roddenberry made the show better.

As for this episode I found it more moving than most Troi episodes. Actually I kinda like it. But I disagree with Woof I'm glad they had family episodes in season 7. TNG is not all about space battles / anomalies - even All Good Things had a focus on the character's relationships and that was why it's so good.

Re: VOY S5: Someone to Watch Over Me

Alright episode, especially the Doctor's part of it. In fact, that was the only good part of it. He's awesome.

But I have to say the Seven aspect of it kind of annoys me. She's not only added purely for her looks, but now we have to have entire storyline where she learns how to date. It was way better when they did it with Data in "In Theory" where it wasn't as creepy as everyone on the ship wanting to bang a socially challenged super model.

Re: TNG S6: The Chase

I think this episode is almost too good to just be an episode. It's two-parter or movie worthy imo. And the reveal at the ending should be heard "half way across the galaxy" but it doesn't even get mentioned in the next episode.

Re: VOY S5: Gravity

Not a bad episode, pretty good. But definitely not one of my favorite Tuvok episodes so far. My main problem is that I'm left with this question, "what did the flashbacks add to this episode?"

It was cool to see the convincing younger actor play the character, but I can't think of anything seeing the flashbacks added that Tuvok didn't sum up in his one liner about what happened to him.

Re: VOY S5: Latent Image

Love this episode.

Something I was wondering... couldn't the EMH just split itself into two simultaneously running versions of itself? I'm sure there's a technical reason why it can't, but it'd be a handy feature.

Re: VOY S5: Timeless

I loved this episode. I don't really understand the negative comments about Garret Wang's acting when I see an episode like this. He was great in this one. I think I can say I liked this episode a lot more than anything in season 4.

Re: VOY S5: In the Flesh

Yeah this was good episode, I just wish they had used some other alien rather than 8472. They were a pretty cool enemy to begin with, why mess with that so soon? And they go so far as to actually make them human in this episode.

Other than that pretty good episode, nice performance by Robert Beltran in this one and the previous episode too.

Re: VOY S4: Hope and Fear

I liked this episode a lot and I'm not a fan of most of the season 4 Seven centric episodes. The villain was interesting and brought up some past events. Not exactly a groundbreaking episode but seemed solid to me.

Re: VOY S4: One

Entertaining episode but it kinda highlights my issue with season 4.

So far in my own rewatch I preferred the episodes before Seven came aboard. I think if this was an episode in season 1-3 it would have been better.

The whole, 'Seven is unique and can do x, y, and z' thing gets really tired. Like Jammer's review said the writers could have done this episode with any of the characters, but everything is so Seven centric this season.

Re: VOY S4: Demon

Definitely not the best episode but far from Voyager's worst at this point in the series imo. I liked it a bit more than Jammer. I think it deserves some credit for not just making the doubles completely evil at the end.

I kind of wish more of the episode was about the crew members deciding whether or not they wanted to be cloned and left there or not, the whole episode could have been dealing with those implications.

Re: VOY S4: Living Witness

Loved this episode, anyone know what soundtrack is playing during the ending? The ending totally got to me.

I agree the makeup was pretty distracting though. Other than that I consider this one of the best episodes in seasons 1-4.
