Re: ORV S1: About a Girl

Ugh, I HATE the Outcast. I can't stand that episode at all.

Re: ORV S1: About a Girl

Well that was BY FAR the best one yet. I was very into this episode, and the comedy was much more fitting this time around. I have a feeling Jammer will like it too.

Somebody hired an actual writer this time! Some of the critics' reviews point to what (I guess) was that The Rudolph reveal was supper stupid but honestly I could see what Seth was trying to get across and I think it worked very well.

Did anybody else see similarities between the tribunal parts and the Worf / Duras honor episode too? When he asked Ed to essentially be his Chardich I kind of lol'd. They even had an old woman reveal at the end!

Also I think this show resembles Voyager a lot more than TNG. Well aside from the exact copy of Picard'a ready room.

In any event, I want to watch the next episode now so they've done something right.

Re: ORV S1: Command Performance

Sorry guys, I didn't know the move was planned. Seemed odd that they'd only give it 2 weeks before bumping it someplace else but stranger things have happened.

Re: ORV S1: Command Performance

Just saw a commercial for this last night saying The Orville was being moved to Thursdays. I'm guessing a move like this (after 2 episodes!) isn't a good sign. That Sunday slot was really good.

Re: DSC S1: General Discussion

@ Brian

"Am I the only one who thinks that Star Trek is done best in the now-old-fashioned format for TV shows, as in 23 or so episodes per season with episodes about 45 minutes in length, as opposed to the modern way of making shows more like mini series with 8-10 episodes a season with 50 minute episodes? "

No, I think most of us here think the exact same way when it comes to this.

Honestly I completely forgot it was even on yesterday. I wonder if the ratings went the same way from the opener?

Re: ORV S1: Old Wounds

In comparison to TNG of course DS9 was darker but the way everybody seems to make it sound it's like Sisko & co were on suicide watch 24/7.

I love DS9, it's my favorite Trek by far. And there were LOTS of light moments to it. I wish it were remembered for being an overall good show in stead of just the 'black sheep, oh so dark and gritty blah blah'.

Re: ORV S1: Old Wounds

The problem with the show is that unlike TNG the comedy here (when it does pop up) feels really forced. Most of the funny bits from TNG are funny to me because they don't shove it in your face at a strange moment and go "See, now laugh because THIS is funny!"

Good TNG funny feels natural-

*The Klingon who tries to armwrestle Data and then headbutts him.
*Data's Spot poetry
*Tiny Riker in the holodeck
*"Mister Broccoli"
*Q, to Worf: "Eat any good books lately?"
*Tomulak, to Picard: "How long are we going to stare at each other across the Neutral Zone??!"

Bad TNG funny

*Any of the Joe Piscipo jokes
*Data, to Bev and Troi: "And have you noticed our boobs are firmer?!" (paraphrase)
*The entire 'Masks' episode (ba-da-boom!)

--

And if we're doing comparisons to another short-lived Fox sci-fi show that was canceled way too early (Firefly) I'll say Orville has no shot in hell it makes it past 6 episodes without a ton of reworking.

Re: ORV S1: Old Wounds

Well I watched some bits of it here and there, honestly it wasn’t too great and didn’t hold my interest very much. There seemed to be too much dead space where they just kind of stood or sat around without saying anything. I like MacFarlane’s American Dad show very much so I know he can do a good series but this one just seems “off”.

The production values are pretty good though. Also an inside joke moment where the guy who played Bashir’s Dad says he works with making better genetically enhanced plants or something. There’s no way that was a coincidence. Overall it wasn’t really funny and it wasn’t really otherwise interesting. They also used that camera side to side pan trick WAY too much it was annoying hahah.

@ Jason R:

It's been a while since I've seen this one but didn't they alter Kurn's appearance too at the end? That'd explain how nobody would recognize him later.

Re: VOY S1: Caretaker

"There is no way Caretaker is better than Emissary but I do think it's just as good or bad as Encounter at Farpoint."

@Real Ric

Emissary is way better I agree but Caretaker is 100x better than Encounter at Farpoint. Almost all of TNG S1 is abysmal. It's a miracle they didn't cancel it right away when you think about it.

Re: TNG S4: Brothers

^^ How many people could even compromise Data like Soong did? ^^

Data has proven himself way too much and is an invaluable member of the crew- maybe it's greatest member overall. He has probably saved the Enterprise 20-30 times all by himself!

Re: TNG S4: The Best of Both Worlds, Part II

They didn't need to show the actual battle, it was way better just showing the aftermath IMO.

I also think this worked really well when they did it later on with Kor's last stand on DS9. Sometimes it's better to let your imagination fill in the blanks. It's why movies like the original Halloween work so well and even hold up today. The killer doesn't need to be shown in every scene, put a few scenes in there and let the audience think about it: Could he appear? Is he behind the curtain? Maybe he's someplace else this time??

Re: TNG S7: The Pegasus

"It was completely inappropriate for Picard to threaten Riker for following orders from higher-up. He may not like being in the dark, but for him to threaten dismissing Riker for respecting the chain-of-command was way out there and should get Picard in trouble."

I love this episode but this is an excellent point. Now when I rewatch this one I'll try to see if differently from the perspective that Pressman was right.

Re: TNG S5: Ethics

@Outrider65:

In another episode she gives an alien an autopsy even though both the family members and Picard told her not to. Even my small daughter picked up right away on that and wondered why she didn't get in serious trouble (at the least).

How Bev's not in some sorta' doctor jail is anyone's guess.

Re: Star Trek Beyond

@RT:

I thought that the space station itself was really cool but not "Star Trek". If it were for another sci fi movie that might sit better with me. Again, it was great but not Trek.

Besides, the canon Trek space stations are pretty awesome as they are, no need to go about making stuff up for the hell of it I suppose :D

Re: DS9 S3: Second Skin

You guys are right on the money, I love the Cardassians they're my favorite non-human race on Trek*. Personally I think they might be the most human of the alien races. It doesn't hurt when you have Dukat and Garak either. They are damn heavyweight-caliber characters.

*If more Ferengi were like Quark they might get my vote too.

Re: DS9 S7: Take Me Out to the Holosuite

@Yanks

Baseball used to be my #1 favorite sport by far. I'd watch 150 of 162 games a season easy. However since about 2000 I really started getting into football and now that is my favorite. I totally agree with all the rule changes and I think it's eventually going to be detrimental to the sport. For starters a touchback should bring the ball out to the 20, and not the 25. I get they want to increase scoring (Hits on the QB rules doubly enforces this too).

Baseball is a thinking man's sport and people "in the know" are just as excited when somebody gets a sac fly as they are when they belt a HR. I love football but baseball is a true classic that shouldn't be so easily dismissed by Senior Gooz.

Re: TNG S7: Phantasms

@Outsider65:

They did bring Alexander back a couple times in DS9 and they did some pretty decent episodes with him IMO. To be honest though I liked the one in TNG where he came back from the future to try to get his younger self to want to be a warrior in order to save Worf later from being killed in a fight.

Re: VOY S7: Endgame

@ DLPB:

Really I think it's only the very end of the episode that pisses people off. It's so abrupt and even the VOY crew deserves a better send off.

Now that I think of it, starting with TNG the series' enders have all gotten worse and worse:

TNG: Awesome, with a hopeful feeling
DS9: Good, but I felt like crap knowing they basically stuck Sisko in infinite limbo
VOY: Entertaining, yes, but WTF ending over way too quickly
ENT: Craps on the crew totally, and even somehow makes The Pegasus a bit worse retroactively

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

That's because Julian was from a test tube!

But seriously, I did a quick google search yesterday to see which upcoming Star Trek conventions were coming near me this year. Not a one. In fact, aside from Las Vegas there doesn't really seem to be any Trek conventions anymore. Back in the mid 90s not only was there one near me it was at least every year. I haven't been to one since 2014 and it doesn't look too promising around the corner.

Has the golden age of Trek already come and is long gone? Say from the 3rd season of TNG throughout DS9's run? It'd be sad if that's the case but at least we can say we were there when it all happened.
