Re: Star Trek: Discovery

So first it's supposed to air this month.

Then it gets pushed back to May, but the filming starts in Sept 2016.

But when Sept rolls around, they haven't even cast anybody yet, so it gets pushed back again.

And well, etc etc then it was definitely shooting like what 2 weeks ago and now it's not until a bit later (Suuuuuuure)

And, well.. SAREK? Whyyy? I'd rather see a bunch of brand new people than re-treads at this point with this doomed series. I don't want them to bring back old characters for the sole reason I'd hate to see Mark Lenard's awesome legacy get pooped on.

Omni is right on this: CBS has totally screwed this up. This whole thing should've been so friggin' awesome and handled by people who realize just how special this franchise is (and could be again). You won't get another shot at a 50th anniversary again. Hell, the convention rounds in 2014 made WAY more stops than this year did. How is that even possible?

The last thing I want STD.. (yeah, it's STD because it sounds awful and it lingers on and on in production hell haha).. the last thing I want my awesome Trek to do is friggin' flat out DIE from it. Holy shit, guys. Do they realize how many people would jump at the chance to HANDLE THIS RIGHT?

Sorry, haha oh boy went on a ranter there, but at least we friggin' CARE about this sorta' thing.

Re: TNG S5: I, Borg

I'd say the Cardassians were probably the best villains of Trek, as they're the most human (barring the Marquis of course).

Re: TNG S6: Lessons

Hi Ross!

I'm a musician as well (bassist for 24 years, drummer on the side if you consider that a musician lol).. Anyhow I always pay close attention to actors on TV when they're supposed to be playing an instrument and seeing if they really know how or not. Good example of faking it: Terrance Howard on acoustic guitar on an episode of "Empire". Horrible example of faking it: Any of the Zack Attack band members minus Slater on "Saved By the Bell" lol.

Thanks for the insight on this episode though. I'm not classically trained and have learned everything I know by ear / myself so this is cool insight.

@ JohnC:

"Melanie would never exist. "

Sure she would, she just wouldn't have Jake's manuscript in this timeline.

Re: DS9 S4: The Visitor

Watched this again last night. It's so good. Easily in the top 3 DS9 episodes for a reason.

However I never realized how kind of borderline psycho and pushy the girl kind of is in this:

1) She's out in the swamp, in the rain, to try and find Old Jake's house uninvited. By future standards this might be cool but if somebody did that today well it has STALKER written all over it haha.

2) Old Jake is trying to be nice and says he doesn't really have time to tell her his whole story, where she immediately responds with something like "OH I HAVE TIME!" It's like, Lady maybe he doesn't want to be bothered in the middle of the night right now?

3) Towards the end Old Jake offers her a copy of his new unpublished works- which would be a huge honor to any aspiring writer- but instead she grabs his handwritten copy and says she wants those instead. Well of course, they're only worth shitloads more haha.

Re: TNG S4: The Drumhead

"My recollection was that as the interrogation of Tarses intensified and it became clear that his career in Starfleet was finished, that he committed suicide. "

@ Matt-

You might be remembering 'The Defector' I think it was called, where the Romulan who thought he was trying to help his people by defecting to the Federation killed himself after he learned it was all a trick by the Romulans.

And since Tarses was part Romulan, this could be it!

Re: VOY S4: The Killing Game

"So the Hirogen leader who looks through the ships database and finds the WW2 data. 'Hey that would make an excellent story for a hunting game.'

But why the hell did they choose the losing side? "

Probably arrogance. "Hey, we can do it better!"

Re: VOY S7: Seventh Season Recap

Tuvok, the Doctor, and Seven ARE the best characters on this show by far.

Tuvok as a character I think is probably even under-rated. Next to Spock, this is how you play a convincing Vulcan.

One of the brighter points of S7, that lady doctor on the planet does a great job and so does Brent (no surprise here).

Re: TNG S7: Homeward

I gotta' say I'm a bit surprised of all the poop being flung around at this episode. I liked it back then and even now. THE SIGN OF.. LAFORGE!

Also when that guy killed himself rather than deal with the reality of what was happening to his tribe- I mean that has to account for something, eh?

And when you look at S7 as a whole this is nowhere near as bad as episodes like Genesis, Masks, or that horrible one with the telephone ringing in Data's stomach. Now THOSE.. Those are bad!

Re: DS9 S1: Emissary

@ Jason "I'm sure others have noted this, but let me say it again just for emphasis: Sisko takes his wife and child with him to Wolf 359 to fight the Borg? Holy mother of.... Okay, I get that Federation ships have families on them for whatever reason. "

I think they had to gather all possible starships as soon as possible to try and save Earth. Maybe they didn't have enough time to unload the families and etc. Plus if a child's mother and father were necessary officers on any given ship they probably wouldn't want to just leave their kid just anywhere.

" I ended up feeling like Sisko discussing linear and non-linear time with my son :-)"

It's like... BASEBALL!
The pitcher throws the ball: The batter swings.. He might hit it, he might miss..
YOU JUST NEVER KNOW!

I'm paraphrasing but my daughter and I joke around about Sisko's linear baseball speech all the time lol.

Then they better hop to it with the casting unless they're going the "Remember Me" route where only 3 people pilot a starship around the Alpha Quadrant :D

Re: TNG S4: Galaxy's Child

I thought the one restriction for the holodeck was that you couldn't make a character who's an existing member of the same ship. Or at the very least it's heavily frowned upon. I think they touch on this in the episode with Barclay making some of the crew into the Three Musketeers and mini Riker (lol). Troi says that it's no big deal until she sees he's made one of her too.

I think Guinan sort of doubles as ship's councelor too.
And a bartender on a warship makes about as much sense as a Bolean barber I guess :D

Re: VOY S4: Year of Hell, Part I

Thanks, guys.

It does look like he'd change his mind up until then pan the camera at his PADD which looks like he's still working on the Time Ship afterall. So maybe his best case scenario would be the creation of the Time Ship eventually but he was able to still spend more time with his wife and family in the process?

This started off kind of silly / dumb but wow did it get dark pretty fast. I can't believe they offed a little girl like that.

If nothing else this episode only highlights VOY's best character.*

Re: VOY S4: Year of Hell, Part I

Jumping around willy-nilly through various VOY episodes I've never seen I watched this two parter last night. I thought this was a really solid couple of shows but even my wife who was half-watching and knows almost zero about Trek knew it was going to be one giant 'It never really happened' story.

Another great Chakotay causes interesting friction (this time with Paris) only to change his mind about 3 minutes later, more or less :(

I'm curious about the final scene- Did Annorax change his tune completely by going off with his wife or is it just a replaying of what's already happened before and will happen again?

"That Tim Russ thing was atrocious as is most fan-fiction."

I find it hard to fault anybody who's willing to put up his own money to fund something like this. At least his heart's in the right place. If he had the money VOY had I'm sure it'd be better.

Plus this guy's a cool shit!

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

"Another possibility (not mutually exclusive) is that Fuller had a grand and revolutionary vision for Discovery which he had trouble selling to the big people upstairs. Maybe they told him to change this and change that, until he was left with something that he no longer felt a drive to produce."

Imagine if the powers that be told him to try and make it more 'Like the Star Trek we all know' and Fuller bailed. Which would be funny because that'd be EXACTLY what almost everyone wants from what I've read.

"Not to mention the brand new Trek encyclopedia that just came out last week! Finally, something good on the 50th anniversary for fans to celebrate."

Cool! I wasn't aware of this but I'll look into it. And don't forget there's that DS9 documentary forthcoming that I'm excited about (unfortunately no Avery Brooks but everybody else appears to be on board).

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

Holy crap, the hits just keep on coming. I swear they're trying to kill this series before it ever starts. All-Access? No word on casting (still)? Prequel? Fugly-ass ship? Edgy just because? A giant release delay? A Showrunner who's said how much he loves this project and wants to be in charge now steps down?

Maybe now somebody new will come in and move this shitshow to a time after DS9 / VOY and save it.

Happy 50th, Trek! We were still love you at least.
